Having kitchen counter replaced? The old countertop...

...makes a splendid sump/work area tabletop. We put ours atop a 100 gallon stand we got for cheap because of a scar...makes a great, easily cleanable, salt-proof work area. Backsplash curl prevents drip, controls water, etc.

I would suggest putting on a couple of thick coats of polyurethane on the bottom/any exposed (not laminated) areas. The particle board they are made of will fall apart quickly otherwise.

and a big +1 - I have repurposed several over the years in the fishroom, workshop, wife's craft room, garage, etc.

... and if you need such a work surface but don't want to spend your fish money on a kitchen remodel, most building supply stores carry sections of laminated countertop for relatively cheap.

And these reasons are why I used a laminate top on both of my aquarium stands.
And I had all six surfaces laminated to prevent the substrate (particle board) from any water damage.

And bulldog's right... They make great bench/work tops in the garage!
I've even used [cleaned up] sink cutouts for our kids as art tables; no worries with crayons, markers and glues! When the cutouts get "wrecked", throw it out and make another.

Whose pictures?

This is an old pic of my 120gal.

This is my new Fluval M60.

And this was for a client's 120gal.

I did the same as Jason for my 120. Laminate the bottom, then the sides, then the top so that no seams are exposed to water that might pool.

I used a few pieces of vinyl floor tile on my oversized stand. It looks great, and was $20 cost. Luckily I was able to buy a few pieces, not a whole box.
