I have two 300w on my 200g/55 sump. Also had to add one on my 20g frag tank plumbed in cause the temp from the drain that feeds it was too cold. I think thats a 200w or 250w not sure.
My 125g/60g sump has a pump that runs hot I think that helps it but I had to have a 300w in the sump and a little 100w in the main tank too.
With the basement sumps it takes a little more in the winter to heat, but I think the trade off of not having to worry about high temps in the summer is great.
29g aquarium, 150w heater; Aqueon Pro heater (black plastic with the red/green LED light). Out of all the heaters I have had in the last three years this is the only one that hasn't failed on me or shattered (because it's plastic) so this is my brand of choice for all future heater purchases.
Total water volume of about 500 gallons and I run five 500 watt titanium heaters on two temp controllers.
The last two days, those heaters were on A LOT. My chiller has the option of adding a heater to it, I'm seriously considering adding it.
That's my challenge in the really cold weather. Main tank sits in the living area, which is at 67 regardless of outside temps, so no effect there; but the sumps sit in my boiler room which can get down into the mid 50s when the weather is really cold. Dual 300s struggle to keep up. I may have to supplement with a third (though limited space available).
so it seems to me that most people are running at just about 3w/gal give or take a little and kinda of not completly ignoring the really small systems 20g/100w heater as that is kinda of just the easier and more stable setup. Those of us running basement sumps appear to need a little extra kick as well.
Hey Buba be careful with that Aqua Top. I had one catch on fire under water in my tank. I smelled something in my living room that resembled an old train set (im dating myself ( ) and I looked in my tank and the heating element inside the tube was smoldering, it was flame orange and looked like solder. I called the manufacture and they were useless. They told me I was past my 90 day warranty. And for that I have black balled their products. And yes they are cheap. You get what you pay for. I only use titanium heaters now with great results.
I use a ViaAqua titanium heater. It has a built in controller with separate temp probe. I have never had an issue. I got mine off of Amazon as well. But TCR does have them in stock as well. I have amazon prime so it was slightly cheaper but had to wait on shipping.
