Help! My wife washed my filter socks with detergent

After flushing the socks with garden hose, I asked my wife to put it in the washing machine to wash. I forgot to warn her not to use detergent. I replace the sock yesterday and now I realized that I did not tell my wife. Made a phone call and my concern is correct. One filter sock was in yesterday night. Now I am very very concern.:mad2:
Do you think a harm has been done to my SPS tank? I am not home yet, so I do not know what is the condition of my tank now.
My plan is to remove th socks when I get home and wash it again without detergent.
Any suggestion?
Will active carbon help?

I wish ... I have never trust her to do anything with my tank. I was running out of time to go to work. I learn my lesson, but I hope it will not be in a hard way.

Relax,

I always wash my filter socks with degergent and bleach. It's the only way the crude comes out.

But before I take it out of the wash, I run it through the wash with just cold water.

Then I let it dry completely before it goes into the reef tank.

Since I have a total of 4 socks, two are always dry to place in the sump before the others dry.

You should be okay....

Thanks MG. :) I finally can relax a bit. I hope everything will be OK.

The only way it could come out wrong is if you wife over uses detergent; and remember we are talking about wives that are cost effective individuals saving us money.

She is not going to over use degergent no way, she is saving money just using enough.

If you have a good washing machine it will pull out all the detergent and crude and wash it down the sewer, what remains is clean fabric.

I have literally placed my mouth on my filter bags after the drying period to see if I can pick up residual amounts of detergent, not once have I ever detected it.

Like I said, a good washing machine does it's job and we know how much degergent to use.

Not only that but bleach will neutralize detergent when it drys....

Yeah, she told me that she did not use much detergent. No bleach is being use though.
Yeah ... I will never let her touch my tank again or I will give her more detail/instruction how to do it. :)

my wife has done that before. i just ran them though a couple of water only cycles and all was good. i did smack her though. some use detergents all the time. i just use hot water w/ a double rinse.

I use paper towels to clean my protein skimmers. That way, I can dispose of them without having to clean them. Filter socks- I just ran them under tap water and cleaned them the best I can without detergents then give them a final rinse in ro/di water before putting them back into the tank.

I had my roomate throw her clothes in the washer without taking my filter socks out and then she didn't tell me (she did so twice) with no ill affects, just a skimmer going crazy.

got home and everything is ok. I washed them again 3 cycle. tomorrow is scheduled water change anyway, so I think I will be OK. I smack her a bit, not too hard. At this time she is a stay home mom, so if I smacked her too hard, I might find more detergent in the tank :)

as was said, allowing the sock to completely dry out is always a good idea.

there was a "how to" thread about cleaning filter socks and it basically went something like this :

1. Rinse out the sock with a garden hose to get the "big pieces" out.
2. Soak in a mild chlorine bleach solution for a couple of hours (emphasis on mild, and no scents or "extras", just basic chlorine based bleach.)
3. Run through the clothes washer without any detergent
4. Soak in RO water over night
5. The next day hang them out to line dry in the sun

Step #4 and #5 will help remove any residual bleach from the filter socks. The RO water will help leach out the bleach and the sun will render any reamining bleach inactive (anyone with a pool will tell you that the sun will destroy chlorine :))

I also did a rinse with water decholrinator between steps 2 and 3, but that is just me :)

Like I said, I got that from another thread about a year ago and it has worked for me so far :). I hope that this helps :D

Wow, that's alot of work.

I keep it simple, I toss the dirty socks, all 20 of them, into the washer, toss in a cuple caps of bleach, wash with hot water.

I run a second cycle of cold water.

After that I just let them air dry.

Has been fine for over a year now.

Great that it has worked for you :). The steps I posted came from Calfo or Fenner, or one of those industry heavyweights. I honestly don't recall which one. And again, I didn't make them up, they were posted by a knowledgable source as how best to clean the sock :). I do occasionally cut corners, and without visible negative affects, but I try to stick to the basics, since most of those steps have technical reasons behind them, as I had noted in my previous post :). Either way, whatever works the best for you is great :). Thanks for sharing your cleaning steps :D

you shouldn't even think that, and NO, it's NOT funny, and NO, it doesn't make you a bigger man....
