Help with Tail Rot and dosing

I lost a young female to tail rot yesterday and its female tank mate looks like she may be infested too. Not seeing any visible signs of rot and she is stronger than the one who died, but she is not eating and is sedentary. She is in a hospital tank that has had 1 dose of Furan 2. I got that info from Seahorse source, whom I highly respect. From the boards here, the message is Furan 2 + Triple Sulfa. Seahorse Source said not to do that. I really want to save this seahorse. Can anyone give me some insight on what I should dose? Just Furan 2 or Furan 2 + Triple Sulfa. The package indicates that both products are for tail rot.

Different people have different preferences for treatment.
It is caused by bacteria like one of the vibrios and sometimes it begins as a result of damage done but it can happen very easy with no damage.
Usually treatment of choice is gram negative antibacterial agent or broad spectrum.
I don't know what Dan is using and my choice is not common in the hobby.
I use salt water Maracyn II, or if I can't find that, fresh water Maracyn II.
Forgot to mention that treatment should be done in a hospital tank and temperature should be lowered to 68° over a couple of days.

I would use just Furan-2, preferably gutloaded into adult brine shrimp because oral dosing is more successful than a bath treatment. You can find instructions for oral dosage of Furan-2 here http://forum.seahorse.org/index.php?showtopic=42497 (scroll down to Furan-2 oral dosing).

Mixing the two is a shotgun approach that can be hard on the seahorse's kidneys. Since triple sulfa is only bacteriostatic, Furan-2 is the best option.

I have and currently am fighting a battle of fungus infection on my male eretus. I lost my first one about a year ago when I did not address the problem soon enough and with not the right meds. I currently use micolift artemiss. I keep him in the tank. The last time I think my horse got too stress from being alone. Artemiss is a herbal, natural medication. The dosing time is usually 10 days. I have found my tank does not suffer from the med. I also have 2 female erectus, 1 male reidi, 2 mandarins, 2 pep shrimp, a couple crabs, nassaius snails, shrooms and zoas.

I think my tank has gotten too hot, 72-73 for a couple of daytime temps and that is what started the process.

The day before I noticed the spots, both on the same side, I had just started a probiotic regiment to help deter this infection. He is responding to the meds fine. Everyone may have their own remedy.

Good luck.

Feel free to call me at home if you want to talk, 860-742-1499, Charlene
