PE:

Crude Protein 69.5% min.
Crude Fat 8.35% min.
Crude Fiber 2.75% max.
Ash 5.5% max.

Hikari:

Crude Protein 10.5% min
Crude Fat 1.0% min
Crude Fiber 2.0% max
Moisture 85.0% max

Why there is a big difference in protein, does it make any difference at all?

PE is whole shrimps with shell and all. It is supposedly better for the fish, but my fishes don't like it much. They have hard time eating it. It is more suited for fish with big mouth. I have mostly Fairy and Flasher Wrasses, butterfly, etc.

Notice how Hikari's numbers show 85% moisture, while PE doesn't even list moisture at all? PE's numbers show the percentages when the water is removed, while Hikari's numbers include the water. Both have about the same percentage of protein if they get evaluated the same way.

Really? How do you know Hikari' s number includes water? doesn't make sense to evaluate the nutrition with added water to me.

Try defrosting a cube of each, and you will find out very quickly which one has mostly water. I feed both plus spirulina brine. Plus PE is a cold water shrimp which automatically has more nutrition. Fish are like us and like different types of food, look how much water was in that salad you ate for lunch?

I've always liked the size of Hikari and Cobalt brand mysis best. PE mysis was always too big for my liking. I really like their cubed cyclops tho.

Some of my fish won't eat the PE mysis. I know it's a better quality product because I see the whole shrimp in it. But my copperband, anthias, and small tangs don't eat it. It also doesn't float in the water column and none of my fish pick food from the sandbed.

I really like the Hikari foods and my fish seem to love them. I try to mix it up and give mine a little variety, Mysis, Spirulina Brine, Regular Brine and Ocean Plankton. I also give them some NLS Pellets every day.

Other 13.9%

Hikari:
Crude Protein 10.5% min 70%
Crude Fat 1.0% min 6.67%
Crude Fiber 2.0% max 13.3%
Moisture 85.0% max 0%
Other 10%

Above is more of an apples-to-apples comparison, calculating the approximate percentages with dry weight. Both brands offer comparable levels of protein. PE seems to offer a little more fat and Hikari seems to have a lot more fiber.

PE is definitely more fatty, IME. I feed both types of Mysis daily. Some of the fish refused the PE at first, but now, a lot of them prefer PE. The smaller fish prefer Hikari, but most of them seem to like both equally.

The real difference is the size.
PE Mysis is more suited for larger fish while smaller fish usually prefer Hikari Mysis.

+1

I did the math on this years ago when people kept saying PE had more protein to rationalize them paying high prices. I got tired of trying to show them they were basically the same.

Hikari was/is much less expensive. I do think both have their place though.......PE has all those juices and corals especially Sps can take advantage of this.

Hikari works better for smaller fish or small mouth fish.......PE better at filling up larger fish.

Hikari also makes an Ocean Plankton which is excellent. It's a size right between regualr mysis and PE.
