history of lunar's reef

What salt do you use now? I think I read you were using Instant Ocean, which here in Canada is the cheapest salt a person can buy, do you still use this and if so do you find it lacking in anything?:spin2:

There are no champions in this hobby. You can learn all your life and there are still a lot of questions, doubts, etc. However thanks for your nice words.

Krzysztof

I feel the same way about my trade, but know that the pictures and information you have shared have inspired many people. Many obviously aspire to raise fish and corals for as long and as healthily as you have. You can be a leader and still have flaws. :p

About 8 cubes of frozen food per day on the average.
1-2 of blue spoon from Salifert tests of Reef Pearls twice per week. I don't use any mechanical filter unless I clean rocks. I don't switch the pumps off during feeding on Reef Pearls. They have a neutral buoyancy so float around for a long time and don't fall into a bottom (that's true for sure) and corals can get food longer.

Krzysztof

Thanks.
Wow, that seems a very small measure of reef pearls...I might try it. Did you notice any difference in the corals?.

Are you happy with the po4 x4?. Do you fluidize it in a reactor?.

Any up to date sump shots?.... That would be really useful too....

Thanks
Mo

Indeed, that kind of salt is also one of the cheapest in Poland. However, as I don't see any others of a spectacularly better effect, there is no use paying for something that doesn't satisfy me fully. I'm still looking for salt that would really "strike me". When found, I'll let you know :)

Have you noticed a difference since feeding reef pearls compared to other foods?

Reef Pearls immitate the marine plancton. It lets me think it's a good form of food just for SPS corals. The fact that LPS corals eat it is, of course, more clearly visible, as shown in the following movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M50ETiF6Y_M

Can I see the difference? Hard to say. Before I also tried to feed my corals well and now I treat Reefpearls as an attractive form of enriching the food, especially when it flows in the tank water for a really long time.

Out of all PO4 removers I've ever used, it's PO4X4 I like most. It's very important to use it exclusively in a fluidized filter, I don't recommend keeping it in a mesh bag - it doesn't work well then. It doesn't need rinsing before usage. Since it's very light, you have to use sponges in the reactor, watch out so that the flow of the water through the reactor wouldn't be too fast and fill your reactor with no more than up to 3/4 of its hight.

I don't have any new photo of the sump right now. I'll try to take some in the nearest future and place it here.

I buy all chemicals of very high grade analytical purity, for all practical purposes.

Sorry for delay.

Your tank is still one of the nicest of the world, Krzysztof!
I still use your balling instructions and I am very happy with it.
What is the magnificient blue sthagorn? a Loisetteae?
Do you suffer from time to time some cyano problems with Pearls?
How many are PO4 using GFO?

Hi Alessandro,

Nice to hear that my recipe for balling is useful for you. I'm happy.
The blue staghorn is probably acropora formosa. You know how it's difficult to be sure of it.
I haven't had any cyano with Reef Pearls. I add one little spoon from Salifert tests 2-3 times per week.
0,01-0,03 of PO4 replacing my PO4X4 phosphates remover every 1,5-2 months.

Krzysztof

What's your opinion about using siporax and a biopellet reactor ? Can the siporax interfere with the pellet capacity of reducing PO4 and Nitrate ??

Hello guys,
Here is my latest favourite photo:

Any updates? I've just bought good heavy-duty equipment for fragging corals ;)

I'm just pruning corals and replacing some corals, so pictures will be soon.

There are no changes in a method, I'm still with NPreducing biopellets, PO4x4 remover and Biogro bacteria.

Incredible......one of my very favorites for sure.

I have really modeled my philosophy from you and Keith (ReefBum). The both of you have a relatively simple approach and systems yet receive amazing and long running results.
