Holy reefer!!!! Dd 250 custom

Thanks Rob!
Just PM me when you know you are coming thru. - you are welcome to come by and visit. Would enjoy that greatly!

Thank you Reef!
I truly appreciate the comment - and I truly am grateful for what I have, and ever mindful of "everything is temporary - even us". That old addage of "Live - Love and Laugh" really means something.

Absolutely Terry!

(That is why I left my house near Asheville NC this morning-Sat. - @ 7:45 a.m. - and am in Madison WI at 12:30 a.m. Sunday...only 2-1/2 hours from the grandbaby, and will be there in the morning!

dang T everything is looking great i didnt even know you had a build thread here. linzi and I are gonna have to come over and visit some time soon i cant believe how everything is coming along. also congrats on the new addition to the fam. whats going on with the frag system is it running yet?

Hey Austin!

Good to hear from ya!!!! And thanks!

I am in Minn. and Wisconsin this week vivsiting the grend-baby- but am trying to get the frag system up and running.
Should be ready to stock it within a month or so...Maybe after MACNA.

Come over and visit!

that is a very interesting build for the tank. i have a small path so i can access the back but this would make things alot easier.

Thanks Jon!

Beex215 - I wish I had rear access to this tank - the 36'' front-to- back dimenion is tough to deal with sometimes. It is well worth it - but can be a real pain to get to the back, bottom corner if you ever need to.
So, having access from both front and rear would be ideal.

T - Went back through and read most of your thread. That pond is pretty sweet. While I have gone with Marineland's stock 250DD with the starphire front, I am impressed with the quality. The silicone is clean, the edges have a nice finish, and the tank feels solid.

Still considered a newbie in this hobby, I hope to have a quality build.

Thanks!

We really enjoy the pond. And I am sure your build will go great. You have access to all the build threads here on RC as research.
The BeAnAnimal overflow is the best one I have ever seen or used, and well worth the time to set it up.
As well - I have been very impressed with the OM-4s.

Are you planning on drilling your tank for returns?

T

The factory overflows "work".... But they will not give you the high flow that many want. They also are not necessarily silent. You may want to look at this thoroughly before setting the tank on the stand. Once you reach that point - it s very difficult to re-address flow issues without just adding powerheads.

And - if you want a closed loop for providing more water movement in the tank, without the drawbacks associated with powerheads, (Tunzes, Vortechs, -whatever brand = powerhead) you will need to drill some holes in the tank.

Not trying to force my views on you - just offering some options.......

No worries there, T. I've got some time. One of the primary concerns is budget. It weren't chocolates that sweetened up the missus. I agreed to an indefinate leave from work for her to be home full time with our 3 children.

I haven't really considered a closed loop for this build. I can see the benefits but I have seen others express concern for additional points for potenial leaks.

Not sure if the DD stock tank is tempered glass on the bottom. Do you happen to know? It's a thick glass. I can always check with Marineland or the LFS.

I have been pleased with how quiet my existing 90 gallon is. The loudest part is the IC fans blowing across the t-5's. Overflow has been quiet. It is AGA with the slightly off center overflow.

Regards

I believe I want to accomplish good flow, slow flow through the sump, heavy skimming, and adequate lighting for predomiantly SPS and LPS.

The support is an important part of it all! So - budget *IS* important.
But - the question I always ask when this topic comes up in our house is: Which is more important to you dear, that I spend less now - only to have to spend more to fix the fact that I did not spend enough intitially??? OR the other way around???

Really, I find much more pleasant ways to do it than that - but my point is, we often try to save money - that costs us more in the long run. One of the ways we "self sabotage" in this hobby.
And, I don't believe that we can throw money and gadgets at the tank, and be sucessful. But, I read alot about young hobbyists that try to take a minimalist approach, without the long term experience needed to be able to manage a biotope such as a reef tank with that approach.

Example: inadequate flow in the tank yields accumulations of detrital organic materials. Those are wonderful fuel for algaes. The fight to get rid of the algae, plus the embarrassment, frustration, cost of extra chemicals, water changes and - now powerheads to add the flow needed....well- it would have been cheaper ( both financially, and on the spaousal relationship:lol:) to perhaps build a better case for the need to spend a bit more in the beginning.

In short - the "ounce of prevention being better than the pound of cure" addage....

The bottom of your tank is not tempered. I would call Marineland/Perfecto - or look on their website to be absolutell certain - but I know mine is not tempered.

I have 18 holes in this tank, 10 of them in the bottom - hence the moniker "Holy Reefer" was given to it by Keith Morkel at Perfecto.

Just a thought about flow thru the sump - (if you are not going to run a refugium), why slow flow thru the sump? I ask because - if you do not have room for 2 pumps, and a separate closed loop circuit, it is quite feasible to have good flow from your sump return pump, thru several returns to teh tank via OM-4, or other methods...?

Something that happens which we do not often think ahead enough about - is that the corals we keep putting in the tank break up the flow. And as they grow, this only increases the further diffusion of flow in the tank.

And..shouldn't I be posting on your thread too?
