Holy reefer!!!! Dd 250 custom

Ahhh!
Quebec City is on my near list to visit!
3 years ago we spent about 2 weeks in Montreal, and Upstate NY.
Loved it. Sounds like a great day to sunbathe!:D
T

I actualy come from Cairns Australia so I prefer to sunbathe out on the reef LOL! but since I now live up here in the cold, i'll take what I can get :)
On a side note hows the Lighting going to be set up on this tank?

I don't know T, I think I need to protect you from yourself here. You need to crate that contraption up, and send it to me-- I will let you know if it is safe and functions properly in a few years or so.....

Jim

Thank you gentlemen!
Madkeenreefer: Lighting is 1-aquatinics 60'' 2x 250 10K moguls and 2-54 watt T-5 Actinics and 2 - Nova extreme Pro 48'' 6 x 54 watt T-5
Will take some pics and post later. Waiting on the elctical lift mechanism to give push button up and down for that. All lights are mounted into an aluminum frame that while in itself is light, when you add the fixture themselves to the frame, well - even the pulley system is not too much help.

Jim - Great of you to stop in and comment! I always appreciate your insight into all things reef. I thought about installing dual axles and a trailer hitch on this rig....but never got around to it:D

Chris - thanks keep cking - I will keep posting pics! And remember kids: Eat More Beef! Butcher BEVO!!! ( From a famous TAMU bumper sticker)

This is the tank with only one light fixture, there are 2 more. More pics on that later.

One word comes to mind T.... SNAILS

:D :D :D

Seriously, thats some nice looking rock.

As far as the NC - TX thing, I moved from Charlotte to TX for a job promotion in '05. I miss the NC landscape, especially the western parts and the Outer Banks. I like living in TX better though. ;)

Yeah - I miss living in TX too...not the topography so much - but the freedom, and the attitude toward the protection of it. And, frankly the pride of all things Texas. It is something that people elsewhere don't understand - and I can't easily explain it....
Took me 5 years to figure out what is wrong with pick-up trucks I see here in NC...
It is that they don't have a gun rack - with gun in it! I grew up on a 350 acre Santa-Gertudis- cross beef ranch, and raised Appaloosas too.
Texas....fresh Shiner Bock, fresh Lone Star, good Mexican food, Giddings sausage...and REAL BBQ!!!!!

Yer makin' me homesick.....:rolleye1:

Thanks Emilio!
After I looked at tanks built by the popular 2 companies in Canada, and all of the major US manufacturers, I was convinced that Marineland/Perfecto was the best one for me.
They had a 300 DD tank on display at MACNA in Atlanta last year - and the edge finish work, silicone, and overall quality was superb.
Then I found out that they can do custom stuff - which was important to me, because of the overflow I wanted.
BTW - BeAnAnimal's thread "Safe and Silent Overflow" is where I got my design for the overflow

when it comes time for me to do my tank upgrade i want a 220 or bigger but i would like it costume made with the side overflow just like you did can you tell me how you had them to do it and i can change my dimensions to fit a narrower tank?
i want a tank that doesnt have the over flow inside the tank i want all the area i can get!
i just thought Marineland did in tank overflows only
GREAT BUILD!

What are the advantages of having the overflows on the side?

Thanks Jim!

Thanks Jim!

You may find that your local fish store can handle all of this, but - if you ar concerned that the details may confuse some.......
I faxed Marineland a basic drawing of what I wanted. I then got in touch with Keith Morkal at the Marineland/Perfecto factory in Indiana.
(Note: You need to go to the LFS or Marineland dealer that you are going to buy the tank from - and make sure he knows you are only trying to clarify, and not "by-pass" him. As well - the dealer should do the same with his distributor. This will keep all comfortable with what you are doing, if you need to ask questions of Marineland - and it saves time as well as the potential of mis-translation of your questions.)
Keith was great to work with - I can't say enough about his excitement to build this tank. Marineland has the capability to do the water jetting that is how the overflow is made. Actually - that was done at Keiths suggestion. It is more than decorative: It actually adds strength as well as "cleans up" the original design of adding the overflow on as a separate piece of glass.
Be sure to read all of the "Safe and Silent Overflow" thread here on RC. It is how I designed the overflow, plus one additional pipe for very high flow potential. It works flawlessly.
Did I answer what you were asking about? Sorry if I rambled....

The advantages of the overflow...
1. accessability - when a tank is 36'' front to back, and not accessible from both sides, it is a big help to be able to see if there is anything in the overflow that needs to be removed. Lessens maintenance pains!.

2. no wasted space - if it is outside of the tank, then, you gain useable space inside the tank

3. flow - I like high flow rates in tank, and I like high flow sumps, I realize there are different ways to look at this - but because i am able to plumb to a basement, and have some room wher I can add "sub-sumps" for slower flow needs ( macro -algaes, DSB's or whatever else)

4.noise - with the BeAn Animal or "coast to coast" tyle overflow - it is virually silent...really. - no B.S....silent. Notice no teeth on the overflow weir. This is to aid in keeping it quiet - but as important - it helps assure that you maximize surface skimming efficiency.

well for me when i do my upgrade it will be in wall accually im putting up 2 walls in my dinning room to make a small room for it so you will be able to see the full front and the the right side as well as you walk down the hallway
but i will have alot more room on the left and only enough room in back for me to squeeze through when working on it and i dont like the overflows being in the tank its self less room so i want the overflows to be external and on the side:thumbsup:

thank you very much
i already book marked this thread and the safe overflow thread in the same folder i have all the tanks im looking at chosing from but from the looks and all the praise you give about the perfecto and the fact they have no problems doing customs im sticking with this type
it will be some time before i upgrade unless things change soon but when i do i will for sure us your thread as help and if you dont mind if i ask you some questions when the time comes that would be really great:thumbsup:

Thanks again for the comments Jim! You are always welcome to ask anything about this system - or anything about the hobby in general here!
Please keep us up to date when you start your build as well.

Wow those are all great advantages. Thanks for explainging that. Now I was a new tank... great :hammer:

Someone asked me about the lighting on this tank - here are some pics. This is a temporary rig, I am ordering the lift mechanism for it soon, and will replace the rope/pulley arrangement int he pics
