Holy reefer!!!! Dd 250 custom

Yep! For a guy that's "not all there"...I am still here:)
Took some time to work on my health issues relates to water quality. Don't remeber is I posted much about it but for years we had been consuming well water that was several times higher in Uranium than the EPA says is the "safe maximum".

Spent lots of money getting to the bottom of all of it - and just took several months to get to a point where I felt like doing much.
I have been enjoying cooking - kind of a nother long term hobby - and actually started a forum for outdoor cooking and BBQ'ing. If you want to check it out - just PM me and I will give you the URL. I am not sure that RC will allow me to post that here.

The tank is doing surprisingly well - even tho I did not touch it for 6 months. I have some Valonia I want to get rid of, but - not other issues or problems.

And - thanks for asking about me Padrino! There are a few folks here on RC like yourself that I think of as friends - and it is good to hear from you.

Tee,
I cant tell you how relieved I am to hear that you are doing okay. Uranium you say? That would mean that you must be very close to a significant sized deposit, which would be dangerous for you.

Have you noticed issues with your memory or anything else? Other than glowing at night?

I think of you as a friend as well. Lets keep in touch and when I'm down in your neck of the woods I'll stop in for a visit.

Cheers
Rob

Thanks Rob!

It is a continuing struggle, but getting better. Energy, memory, balance, and some other stuff were severly affected. But it is getting much better.
Long story about the Uranium - it is naturally occuring but there has not been a mandate for education about it in all states. New Jersey publishes a great information site for the consumer about it tho - if you are curious as to the affects and what to do, how to test etc.

Please get in touch with me if you are coming thru - and stop in for a visit. But don't drink the water:) ( Just kidding!)

Wow, just went through your thread and was impressed. Your build was great. Your house and pond are beautiful. Your sorroundings are beautiful as well. It's really sad you've had to deal with your health issues due to your water supply. Shouldn't happen in todays tech filled world. Especially here in the U.S. Wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks Mike and Terry and Reefnut.

It has been another phase of education - this water thing. Funny how we think about water quality and it's affect on the health of the animals in our aquariums - but may feel that it is less important for us. I can now tell you from experience - that is not the case.

The "why" of all of this is the difficult one to understand - at first. It seems that in most ( maybe all, not sure) states a water well is not tested by the state for radionuclides - unless that well serves 15 or more homes. It is then categorized as a community well. And - it must be checked prior to releasing any water for consumption, and every month thereafter. That policy itself shows clearly that the state is aware of the potential risks, and that it can represent large financial liability - otherwise -ther would not be the motivation on the part of the state. Not a conspiratorial view - it is just the accounting/risk mitigation side of how our governments approach things.
Yet, if you are on a private well, or one serving 14 or fewer homes - there is NO information offered, no suggestion that you may want to have the testing done, or ANY education as to why this may be important.
It's not that this state hides this information - they just don't talk about or inform the public of the potential risk.
If you call the state EPA ( Here it is called the DENR - Dept. of Envirement and Natural Resources) and ask, they will provide you with information, but -if you have already had years of exposure - and are now dealing with effects - it is - well pretty frustrating that all of this could be prevented for a a little money ( far less than my medical bills over the last year).
I really should stop talking about this here - for fear that I will look like a wacko ( well...more than usual anyway:) ) and that RC may see my posts as a mis-use of the purpose of the thread and the site in general.
But - I encourage you to contact me via PM, if you want information about health risks, symptoms, research I have done, government health agency papers written on the subjet, etc.
Bottom line: Please - don't let this happen to you and your family. If you are on well water - have it tested for radionuclides. This would be primarily Uranium, Radium, and dissolved Radon gas.

Off the soapbox - and on to fun stuff now!

I am so glad to see your health is improving. By the time I got to that part of the thread I felt as though we were old friends and felt devestated to see that you had come to such a crisis. I kept thinking about you thru-out the day, and said a little prayer. That is the wonderful thing about this site, and this hobby, I guess. You reach out to people all across the world that share a passion for aquarium keeping and based on the strength of our words, well, and great pictures, you form a connection. You begin care about people you have never met. Were other family members or neighbors similiarly affected? I wish you speedy recovery.

Thanks Mrs. M.
Because my wife works so much at our office - and I from home, and I was using an enclosed shower-room ( steam, body spray jets, etc) and consumes most her water away from the house due to work schedules anshe hates all of the fancy shower stuff ( she has her own bathroom - a key to domestic tranquility here:) )- my exposures/adsorption were much greater than hers. She has not had any associated known health issues thank goodness, and her levels are not much above the norms.
Mine are 200 times the "safe level" per the lab tests ( have done 3 at 2 different labs, partially in dis-belief, partially to insure that no one in the lab screwed up).

I did not talk about it to anyone for a while - It just felt too ...bizarre to be believable. After a couple of months of thinking about it, and trying to read and understand - and having real pangs of conscience, I have reached out to neighbors, and folks in the area, and the result is that some folks do have wells high in one or more of the daughters of Uranium ( isotopes or "progeny" of Uranium are other terms I have seen used) and among those, some have some kidney issues ( which can be a symtom of U exposure). The other risks are elevated kidney, liver stomach and bone cancers - so while I refuse to become a "poster boy" or a focal point for a "cause" I do feel a certain moral and ethical charge to share what I know, and allow others to choose what they wish to do with that information.
Again - I do have resources I will share with anyone that feels they have any need for concern. I just will not post them here, out of respoct for RC.

I am glad to hear you identified the cause and am on a road to recovery. Has your ro water been tested? Does the ro unit take out uranium? How about your koi pond which I admire, Im sure you use well water there. Any side effects to the koi?

Thanks jt!
I test the water from our drinking water RO every 3 months. It is clean - and has virtually eliminated the Uranium. I have it plumbed to our instant hot water tap on the sink, a bar tap in the laundry room, and the water and ice in the refridgerator.
The Koi seem to be O.K. - on of them has a bad case of spinal deformation, and they have slowly stopped reproducing in the last 5 years. They used to spawn in the spring and it was fun and exciting to watch, and see how many "kids" made it long enough to become residents. That just does not happen any more. I don't know that U is the cause - but it is interesting....

Holy SMOKES! Your tank, your house, your pond, the attention to detail :eek1::eek1::eek1:

Your build is unreal. I'd love to see updated pictures of how your tank is doing. Glad you're feeling better. Job well done my main man T

Thanks Mike - come see us!

Now - for the most incredible event in my life:

Hi Rob!
Health is improving. Slow but, improving. I have sold all of my tanks. The Holy Reefer was bought by an RC member ( Capt 85 ) from somewhere near Springfield Mo.
I still have my Koi Ponds, and call in help to maintain them.
Life is full of twists and turns. I recommend a seat belt and duct tape for this ride. <G>

Good to hear from you!
