Horrible LFS "Recommendations" and "Facts"!

When I first got into the hobby one LFS told me Damsels are calm, peaceful fish that are compatible with any other fish. That fish was the devil!!!

Another LFS said I could easily fit 2 to 5 tangs in my 65g tank. Luckily I only bought 1 Yellow Tang who is happy in its new 180g which I still feel is too small for him.

And last but not least....I was looking at frags, browsing when I pointed out that a few of there acroporas where bleached the sells person tells me "No those aren't bleached, they are a new Albino species we received and are on sale for $50 and are normally $150!" I laughed hysterically as I walked out of the store never to return.

A real common one is---'Sure, damsels will be fine in that 30 gallon tank.'
[one tiny yellowtail or 1 chromis, maybe, iffy. couple of clowns [who are damsels]. But if you want multiple damsels, go 100 gallons at minimum.]

I have to agree with Heath. I have an egg laying trio that has been perfectly fine without a nem.

It's not that hard to understand ,that clownfish will not die from lack of a host ......Trio you say..? Tell me more and add some pictures...

Sorry, was busy with homework all day. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

I got them a few weeks ago from a local club member who is going back to freshwater. The last batch they laid was in he 10g he put them in when he broke down his 180g.

The biggest is probably 4x bigger than the smallest. I was really surprised that they got along.

I've seen scuba footage of a giant magnifica with about 3 golden domino damsels (adult about 4.5") and a number of other clownfish including percs all wallowing in it, while a huge surge blows them all hither and yon...all the fish happy as can be. Duplicating this situation in a home tank would be a challenge, first of all because the nem was pushing a yard in diameter and secondly because that surging current would be hard to keep in a tank...So yes, they can share, but I suspect the sharing requires a lot of room, and maybe enough current to keep everybody busy holding place.

I actually second that, my Clowns keep dying if they don't have their own personal anemone/host...
But after that is just wrong

That is without a doubt not why they are dieing. There are many examples of clowns living long lives without Nem's throught this forum (and in my tank). You would have to look for another reason.

I too am very fortunate to have a LFS that is very knowledgeable. I save the tough questions for the owner, who has been in business for over 30 years. His staff are different, some are very knowledgeable and some are just kids working a summer job. I make it a point to always do my homework before any livestock purchase. I avoid chain stores unless there is a super deal on salt, etc..

The LFS I go to actually has 3 locations, each location owned by someone different, but they use the same name... anyways.. depending on which location you go to will literally determine what information you get. One store will tell you one thing and another will say something totally different.
Thats why I came to this site and ask a billion questions ;)

My LFS in Pearl Ridge, HI would have dozens of sea horses flying off the shelves because they are harmless and eat pellets
