That is the preferred method. But either way I always keep an extra tank or two running for new fish to check/ treat for disease and most important to allow the fish to destress, start eating and put weight back on (in most cases.)
The use of an acclimation container is also a good idea.
Or in the extreme case I had to remove my powder blue months back as he was terrorizing a pair of GSM, a wrasse and butterfly I added. Kept him out for 6 weeks by himself and when I put him back everything was fine.
