I am so glad.

It has been a long road to perfection. Crazy. We have seen so many changes over the years. Fluorescent, Metal Halide, VHO, T5, LED. Wow, been a long time. Crazy how far we have come. I was drawn back here because it is my birthday. I have posted thousands of posts; however, things have been lost over the last couple centuries. I hope I can still contribute. I have some ideas. Not sure who is left but shout out if you are. :)

Yup, I remember. Can’t say I miss all the fighting & disagreeing over silly circumstantial preferences. I don’t see any of these crazy guys from back then but what I am glad about is how all this filtration & lighting technology has really proven these crazy gurus from back in the day, wrong.

Welcome back. There's a few of us still around. I was still using MH up until a few months ago when I finally made the switch to LED.

Well, I guess we need to keep things alive. So what is actually going on this day? Is everyone now into micro tanking (keeping everything really tiny) or has everyone determined we need space to achieve a good balance? Thank you for responding and just being around. I love this stuff. 3 Gallon micro, 300 Gallon garbage. :) You are going to have to excuse me. I consult odd hours. Please. I ask nicely. Please. Leave a message and I will definitely respond and thanks to the old team for keeping this alive. Looks great, feels even better, miss you all!

As far as tank size, it's really come down to a matter of personal preference as we seem to be pretty successful in keeping both small and large tanks.

I know @wvned has several large tanks and @Nanook has a 375 gallon mixed reef and a 470 gallon SPS reef.

I've been in the hobby since the 1980s and have had reef tanks ranging from 15 to 450 gallons over the years. I currently have a 40 breeder and am (very slowly) working to finish my basement. Once that's done, I have a 150 gallon I'm going to upgrade to. I originally downgraded from the 450 to the 40 due to a job loss years ago....kept the 40 on autopilot while my kids were in sports in middle school, high school and one who played football in college. Now that they are all graduated from college, I have more time on my hands so I wanted to upgrade again. Since we frequently go boating in the summer, I didn't want a huge tank so something in the 120-180 range fits the bill.

Additionally, with the automation available to us today, Coralvue Hydros, Neptune Apex, etc there is a lot that can be accomplished in maintaining that tank in a fairly hands-free manner.

I just have 4 small ones.
Personally I think 95% of new things that have come alone are to make new people neuritic with options that dont mean anything. Like salinity probes that don't actually ever hold their calibration.
Doing marine tanks with API test kits was like making music. The colors were good or bad. Exact values mattered little.
Now it's all digital and must be exact to 4 decimal places.

One that makes me laugh is dry live rock.

Yeah, I think nano & micro is really what opened up the hobby to more people thanks to all this resin technology, anaerobic denitrification media, & small hardy captive bred fish along with bottled ocean water, it just can’t be any easier. All the old guidelines have gone out the door, you don’t necessarily need rock for denitrification, good starter bacteria bottles DO work, & you really can keep certain species marine fish in small tanks.

This is amazing! thanks! I had so many photos of the micro/nano tanks I have done and nothing exists anymore. Sorry. I am getting back into things and have built my own tank etc. I have to do some research. Thanks again for being around.

This is an older thread of mine from a long time ago. However, it was the only place I could find some images of what I did.

the end of this article takes you to another one as well. That is where I designed my custom tank.
That's a beautiful aquarium 🤩. Those early nano days were tough for people on forums, man. Unless you were on nano forums, the first thing back then you would have been told by most aquarists was that HOB filters or any mechanical sponge filtration for that matter was a nitrate factory completely unaware of the current day resin & denitrification technology which is really what makes it possible. I used HOBS for my first nanos but later realized having a canister filter that is at least 1/3 the size of the aquarium made maintenance easier & less frequent.

40g nuvo, has been thru 2 moves, 3 hurricanes, 1 electrical shortage that fried a couple things before being without power for 2 days and me not there. Then finally moved to new house. Finally after many years, only thing that survived was 2 clowns and the soft corals. Slowly making a come back, but now I'm moving back up to a 120g which has been an adventure.

I sure do miss those MH/VHO combo's, MH/T5 was nice too. I can't complain about the LED's though. They have treated me fairly decent. Intact I have a thread from years ago about my original switch to LED's.

I miss hoods. I actually like the look of a nice solid hood over an aquarium. People would complain about LED's price to power ratio back then a lot. The thing that bothered me the most was the misleading marketing that wouldn't state weather they provided enough blue light for corals or sometimes not clearly state if it had enough power for hard corrals.

I am going to try another 3 gallon pico. I think I have everything I need to get it done. I will be changing a bunch of stuff, but what I would like is input and LOTS of it as to what tanks, items, things you all think are important to have to get it done. I have been doing this for over 30 years so you don't have to get so specific, but if there is something new out there that you really like, please let me know. This is the tank I am going to be using.

I am not sure if you can get there. Did not want to do a small URL, but you get the idea. Going to make it work. Please throw out the thoughts the ideas, the dreams, the possibilities. Anything, just say it no matter what anyone thinks. Just say it. Please. I know it is a small tank, but I have done this for many years. New tech these days, new tests, new stuff. Just lay it out and please don't argue about it. I will figure it out once I have ALL your suggestions and ideas. Thanks

If you think there is a better tank to start off with or a better brand let me know. I don't want to go larger than 5 gallons. Please, toss out your thoughts. :)

That is a beautiful scape. Wow, I just can't go that large. Impressive!

Your link to the tank works and it looks interesting. Marineland did have some leak issues with their Deep Dimension tanks a while back and, I believe, discontinued them at some point. But, I've never had any issues with their smaller tanks.

I don't know that I have any advice/suggestions on a pico tank. The smallest reef tank I ever had was a 15 gallon tank I drilled for an overflow and had a 10 gallon sump. It was a fun tank but, since I was an Acro/Monti person at the time. It wasn't a good fit for me as I couldn't fit many SPS in there and they outgrew it pretty quickly.

That’s a good looking pico. Looks better than my 2.5 Fluval spec. Definitely upgrade the return pump. The one it comes with is very weak. I use an Eheim with min 60gph but after about seven years it’s flow has reduced. Rear sumps are a pain to work with especially small ones like ours so you wanna plan exactly where you want everything. I use seachem matrix for denitrification & chemi pure blue for chemical filtration. I have two ora clownfish & my nitrates & phosphates are zero unless several days without chemical filtration.
