i give up on freakin montis! help

hey everyone thanks for the suggestions and further questions to help figure this out.....

Sk8r.... the colt is in the mid part of the tank next to my valida which is doing awesome.... ive placed these montis all over the tank they all do the same....

kirstenk.... yes ive tried frags from other fellow reefers and same thing they go bad and slowly die off on me....

scallopking aka sean lol.... yeah maybe ill pull the carbon out but i should try getting rid of thaat colt it just sucks cuz its a nice piece and one of my first corals....

mammothreefer....as for flow i have 40x's in the tank but i have placed them in low flow medium flow to high flow and all behave the same slowly dying off

twon8.... i have the following fish... blue hippo, yellow tang, mandarin, diamond goby, lawnmower blenny, small fuzzy dwarf lionfish, 4 lyertail antias thats it and ive never seen one mess with a healthy acro or monti for that matter...

scarab65.... i feel ur pain... ive lost some nice pieces for sure which makes me really mad

daddyjax... i dont dose iodine... do i need to check this level?.... yes my pendants have UV shileds... and ive tried all kinds of montis.... wild aquacultured and frags from reefers....

so whats the deal everyone??

what steps would u suggest in figuring this issue out....im willing to part with my colt to see if that can be the problem but he doesnt seem to be buggin anything else.... im willing to pull out carbon but im not sure that would do anything....

what else can i really do??

im still lost but i think on the right track with all of ur help trying to figure this out....

thanks for the help and cant wait to solve this issue

To me your alk and CA are a bit low. I run mine at Ca 450 and Alk at a DKH of 11.2. Montis grow so big they have to be removed, and hard as a rock. My flow has alot of back and forth movement with 4 inputs on 2 SCWD's. I only run carbon for a few days on occasion.

Yes I run about 1 cup of carbon in my 75g PASSIVELY in my sump near my return pump.

The one thing in my tank that ****es off my montis is direct flow. When a power head is aimed in the same direction or even same proximity to them, they sometimes do not appreicate it. Simply readjusting the PH will bring back PE on the coral within mins/hours.

On the topic of sofites. I have some of the most toxic softies you can get which are leathers. I have 2 decent size devil's hands, an 8" tall colt, several kenya trees, few colonies of zoos, about 5 good size mushrooms, and several riccordia. Even with all those softies my SPS does just fine. Like I said my montis have done well from the start.

Try putting a frag in a low flow area and see how it does.....

Oh and your Alk/Ca levels are perfect. 7.0 - 8.0dkh is perfect for SPS...11.0 is too high IMO. Ca can be from 380 - 420 so you are fine there as well.

thanks again for ur help guys and u too horace!

yeah im not sure what to do cuz ive tried all areas like ive said and seems like u have some of the same softies i have....

im just not sure what they do not like about my tank which is just really wierd....

i have never been able to keep a monti even back in my 100g tank when i was doin sps the same thing happened in that tank too.....

i even changed bulbs to see if that would help but still nothing works ....

ive changed salts too and all my RO/DI filters are new....

all my otehr acros are taking off all except my montis!

hmmm i wonder what that may be attributed too?

y do i have to like montis lol

if it were something like yellow polyps that didnt live in my tank i could do without those lol

attributed to? im guessing lack of nutrients.....

i have added sand back and will see how they fare in the next few months....

all in the name of personal experaince/experiments

hmmm interesting....

i know my skimmer works really good and coupling that with macro algae a phosban reactor and carbon it might be a lil too clean huh

IMO/IME theres a point of lack of nutrients(pale faded colors on acros and montis...and my montis did the worst) and a point of excess nutrients (brown corals excess unwanted algaes)

theres a fine line ....still trying to find it

murphreef,

I have the same issue with a dark rich coffee brown monti digitata. I
have about 3 frags broken off i mounted on some rubble. They are all
on a 90g AGA in various height. High, medium, low. All frags are
beached white with brown polyps. All the frags have not grown in 4
months but not recessed.

Nominal tank parameter

temp : 78
alk : 7 mq
cal : 380
PH : 8.15
SG : 1.025
ammonia, nitrites,nitrate ~ 0
ORP : 425

I run 2x250 14k Phoenix DE just like you. low nutrient tank ( 1 clown
fish). mainly SPS. Its been running about 6 months, I just introduce a
green monti cap with purple polyps and does not seem to grow either
while the acro and sps are encrusting.

--------------------------

These broken frags came from my 37g cube which it grows well. The
colony is about the size of 2 hands

Nominal tank parameter

temp : 81
alk : 7
cal : 400
PH : 8.25
SG : 1.025
ammonia, nitrites,nitrate ~ 0

This tank is a mix reef full of 20+ various softie, LPS, and SPS.
Light is 10K Ushio 150 DE ( which I don't recommend ). 3 fish. Seems
to be lots of nutrient because i'm battle brown algae for 9 months.
This tank as been up for 2 1/2 yrs.

I'm thinking its a combination of low nutrients and excessive light
which may cause my monti issues.

nataku....

hey at least urs live.... mine have all perished after a few weeks to months slowly but surely they fade away

I would be glad if you can show your tank picture here with some close up picture of your montis, as i would be amazed on reefers keeping softies mixes with sps. An eye opener for me.. :bum:

If you want some basic digi frags to play with just let me know. That stuff grows like weeds in my tank...right along side my acro, tubinaria and devil's hand.

Horace,

Ya some tank photos will be great help, to show the placement of the montis coz I might be placing my montis in the wrong places.

Hence the devastation....

thanks beach native for the offer i might take u up on that!

as for softies i have those that i mentioned and my acros are doing fine its the montis that are not happy

seems like a lot of people have mixed reefs i just think the softies are always to blame cuz we cant figure out what else it could possibly be

I kept softies for a couple of years with sps and my tank was fine and my monti grew the best of the sps. I dont think the softies are to blame as much as the low nutrients and Phosban. I have seen the effects that this combo can do to montis and I think more people are realizing the damage.

well now im leaning towards low nutrients... im kinda not thinkin its the phosban cuz i just started that about a month ago and ive had a prob with montis since day one over a year ago.....

so where do i go from here

how do i get them happy ....
