Saw a whole 2 deer this weekend, and I spent 12 hours in the woods. My father got a decent doe, and our other hunting buddy got an alright 5 point. Definitely nothing special though.

One I just saw a few minutes ago, pawing up the ground ,huffing & puffing .Seams pretty p'ssed off that other buck was here or something.

Nice Buck! Can't get a shot off? I'm going with bow in some spots you can't gun hunt. Hoping to fill my gun tag with bow.

Nirvanafan,Yeah, that sucks and Ive had it happen ,too.I think I had around 40 hrs in before I got a shot at a buck.Behind the scenes I sent a pic of the arrow to cully and honestly I cound'nt believe I didnt get that deer.It was tough to take.Moped around for 2 days before going back out and getting that 4 point.

Don't mean to rub it in with the pics its just Ive never seen as many bucks as Ive seen this season. Its strange all year round were able to watch does from our deck, literally everyday right up until the day after halloween and does become extremely scarce.I always thought they hearded up or something with a dominant buck elsewhere.
I think now its all these bucks frequenting the area harrassing the does thats keeping them away.
Never really had the time to be observant until this year.I swear thats what seems to be happening around here though.

Get out there and put em down!

I'm only gonna get out once more this yea. Wife and sitters put up with a lot this season, but once I got a Buck in the truck their not quite so willing to help out. Gonna try a late season last minute minirut hunt around the 7th or 8th.

Made an amazing venison curry stew this weekend. Worth all the work. Head is in a beetle bin at a buddy's. Not a monster Buck but buddy is hooking me up so I'll take the Texas/ euro mount. Just a touch nicer than just the antlers.

I'm with you Steve. Seen some real nice bucks this year.

Mark, I switched lenses to get the pic ,the first buck was probably 45-50 yards away. The second was 65-70 yards ,way out of my range.
If I was in my stand, that would of put either one in the 10 yard range.Such is life eh'

Yeah I just ran that past jacquil a few days ago.I wasn't sure if it was legal to hunt with a bow during gun season, knowing it is Im just planning to go out back with my bow,too

Next year I wont forget Mark in case you get in another situation with land.Like I said ,I dont have much but your welcome to it,put up a stand ,a backup spot or whatever.no problem and I dont charge people, but I can only do 3 guys max including myself between my land and property I have permission to hunt.

I made some italian and summer sausage so far, summer is still marinating for another 12 hrs before I can bake it.

Thanks Joe.Wish I got a better pic of the first buck though. From what I could tell he appeared to be an 8 but thin ,spindle line tines. Naw to small for gun here,I wish I could.
Goodluck to you.

Can't stop looking at that pic Steve. The mass and the length of his G2s are great!!!

You can used a shotgun, bow, crossbow, handgun, and in some counties, rifle to fill your gun tag. I just don't like shotgun season, especially early, especially weekends, and ESPECIALLY Thanksgiving week/weekend. Tons of yahoos. Shooters, not hunters IME. No offense to this that love it, just not my thing. Perhaps a little bowhunter snobbery.

I'm tonnage wait n hit some quiet close spots with the bow midweek next week and week after. That's about all my wife will tolerate. Yesterday and this am looked sweet though!

Steve, thanks again for the offer! Far too kind sir!!!

I think I'm going to try out a handgun next year. I rarely shoot over 70 or 80 yards. A Super Redhawk in 44 mag should fit the bill perfectly. It holds more bullets than my shotgun, is lighter and easier to carry, and handguns are a blast to shoot.

Regarding the yahoos... There are plenty of them on state land this time of year. My family has land across the valley from state land and sometimes you'll hear shots well before first light, and after sunset. I love not having to go on public land. It would really scare me during the regular season.

Yeah Ive got to get a copy of 2011 /12 regulation guide. When I got my license this year they were all out.
I didnt know about crossbow until this year, anyone know the the standard guidline rules on those? Are they legal in southern Tier?I dont own one,not planning on it until maybe next year if it is something I might be able to use here.Just curious for now.

I use to hunt down in PA. (rifle) but the laws they have are crazy.
Heres some I remember .They have a horn rule.So in order to shoot a buck it had to have a min.of 3points on one side. The season is also a lot shorter ,like 2 weeks total.Talk about yahoo's,Ill never forget it.Sounded like a war zone.

There was no rifle then shotgun season like we have here its all in one.Laws might have changed as its been 7-8 years since I was their last so things might have changed.

Crossbows are only legal during the regular season. So, you can use them anytime that you can use a shotgun. You have to fill out a form saying that you read a couple pages in the manual, and then mail it in I think. I believe you can use them anywhere that allows bow hunting (Long Island, some parts of Monroe County, etc). I don't think that you can use them during muzzle loading season, but I can't remember.

A crossbow is only loaded if there is a bolt loaded. A crossbow that is pulled back with no bolt loaded is considered unloaded. Obviously, never dry fire a crossbow.

The 2011-2012 manual is online at the DEC website too.

deer2011.jpg

i cheated and used a gun opening day. i like my single shot mossberg more and more. 10 yd recoveries are nice. i'm getting to old to drag deer far. loading this big girl on the roof of my friend's SUV wasn't easy. i miss my p-up. i was on private land. 630 and it sounded like a war.

Nice,congrats!
Was out with my bow had 2 does sneak by then a real nice 6 point about 10 minutes later come through. No clear shots though.

i'm happy with her. she was bigger than 2 y/o 8 pt my friend shot that morning. i'm not a trophy hunter at all. we had great weather ,and i had meat for the holidays. steaks were good, and i've got a backstap ready for turkey day at my parents.

Have any of you guys ever had luck with the secondary rut?I think one of these does might be getting some interest.I finally got my webcam back out and working again, and from the pics it looks like this buck is following her/their scent trail.I'm not sure but it does appear to have his nose to the ground in all the pics Ive got.
