I need help...having diffeculties with my zoa's!

...reef junkie do you think this will help with my zoa's? agains there not really opening up much and i haven't touched them in a while to see if anything new is growing...

Do yourself a favor, test your water and do water changes.
Usually, a water change will help.

Unlike my situation where the only thing that will help is a large amount of cash and people to sell me back my old collection...

yes i have carbon and phosphate remover...along with sand and lr as my filtration...but the carbon and phosphate remover are both new (only a week, 2 weeks old at the best)

Phosphate remover when new can cause things to close up, kinda like a residual effect. I had the same problem when I used it to remove silicates from the water. Have you tested for silicates? I know for a fact that silicates that are above 2-3ppm will cause zoanthids to close up it happened to me. I try testing for silicates. Even if you use RO/DI sometimes there are more silicates in the water then can be physicly pulled out, and that compound is one of the hardest to remove from source water.

I'm not sure I don't have any Xenia, to be honest. I know my bubble looked a little shabby when I had this problem. I also know that it took like 2 days before the corals would open back up after adding the phosgaurd. I used the stuff seachem makes and it closed some stuff up after adding it to the filter. I can tell you this once it started working after about a week it was like a light switch got tuned on, all the coral were better then they were previously....Its so hard to tell sometimes and it really is a process of elimination. Once I got through my list of thing that had changed ect...the only things left were silicates or Phosphates and as it turned out it was silicates, the place I was getting my water from their RO/DI wasn't pulling out all the silicates.....My phosphates were at zero and so was the Nitrates...so they weren't the culprit. See if they will test it for you...No reason to spend cash on a test kit that really doesn't get used that often. IF not then buying one will be your only way to tell.

I was thinking the same thing.
Zoas don't tend to like Carbon very much. Especially long term. Everytime I ran Carbon my zoas either closed up or shrank.

On a positive note, I took the remainder of my zoa collection to a friend that owns a store here on the Island. Hopefully they will bounce back. Cross your fingers for me, I have mine crossed.
It's tough to type like this...

LOL.....I will keep them crossed for you....By the time your bouncing back I might have some PHEsw/red rings I can frag if they keep spreading like they are. At least I think they are PHE w/red rings.....I took a chance a few weeks ago and got this rock that is mybe 1"x1.5" that had these really small polyps on it. They were purple but had no rings and now they are still purple w/ red rings but the purple is a little washed out more like a flat purple as opposed to a glossy purple. Still nice for$10 bucks....

Ug, you use that to cut through rock?
That is one nice and expensive rock cutter!:eek1:
Well, not for splitting big rocks, but it works really well for fracturing out layers of rock with attached zoas. The blade holds up, and it's pretty sturdy so I can apply a lot of pressure on a small spot. That way I don't have to bash the heck out of the rock.

I cut through the mat to get the number of polyps I want and then fracture out a layer of the rock. More like cutting diamonds, I suppose :)

I yanked my carbon this past weekend after I realized what was causing the prob :(

Sweet deal!
Have a pic?

My zoas are near and dear to me and I hope they come back. It took me 1.5 years to collect them and even then it was from very careful planning and timing. I think all of my zoas were super colorful and I will only replace them with super colorful ones.
<---- Zoa snob.:p

Ug,
I hear ya, I have a CRKT that I carry around, but I am not as brave as you, I won't put it in the salt water. I once paid $150 for a sickas- diving knife and I was so proud of it. I looked like James Bond on Dive trips with this knife strapped to the side of my leg. Sure enough, after two dives, it corroded. I even siliconed and washed it too!

I am beginning to think that Carbon is a no-no when it comes to zoas.;)

I'll try and get you one....I am trying to let 2 A. Nigripes settle in so I haven't been doing to much around my tank other then feeding.

Can I give you an internet hug?

I feel really bad about this whole thing. Especially since I was supposed to trade with so many of you in the next few weeks.

Now I have nothing. Well, time to dust myself off and start again...

Well some sps people recommend running carbon just a few days at a time.
Try removing your carbon if your if your zoas have been fading
