Hell hath frozen over. If ever there was ever a time that someone could use the term "black perc" and actually have it be correct, this is it. Now this is really gonna cause confusion in the world of clownfish...there is such thing as a "black perc", we have been wrong all along.
The only problem is, she (or he?) is probably one of only a few to be found in the ocean.
That is an absolutely gorgeous fish. I don't make it over to rareclownfish so maybe my questions are already discussed over there. I am assuming that it is the only one of the pair like that? WC? Breeding? If so, what do the babies generally look like?
Ahh, missed that response. Interesting. I wonder if it is just random or if there is a little pool somewhere out there of all black percs. $300 or so bucks doesn't really sound all that bad. I could only imagine what the price posted on LA Diver's Den would be for clowns that looked like that (and they would get snatched instantly).

Black perc is a common name that people use to describe 3 different kinds of fish it doesnt matter how much black it has.
Isseym328 Black percs dont exist.... i know you know that but your post seems to indicate that there is in fact a Black perc.

IMO, this fish have perfect bodyshape, beautiful Onyx A. percula. Even better than Rod's Onyx. I would love to get my hand on him/her and breed him with similar quality Onyx A. percula.
I totally agree the body shape is the winner just looks perfect, My onyx and regular percs both have this shape, it makes it instantly easy to tell the difference between the Black( or as I would now like to call them "super onyx":rollface:
) percula and black ocellaris, polymnus dont even enter into the debate for me as they look, behave, swim differently. Although I konw that they are often sold as Black percs.

Okay...did some homework...
You guys are right (not that there was any doubt, eh? :lol: )...my baby black clown fish is a 'true black percula' which is A. ocellaris...
Mostly a case of 'name confusion'...whoever called it a 'perc' in the first place needs to whipped with a wet noodle...or a wet anemone...
...I would've preferred to try another pair of A. percula, but now that I have the black A. ocellaris...I went back to the reef store...they had one lonely orange A. ocellaris left...so I brought him home too!
...and guess what surprise I found in my tank when I came home with the new fish?
My black ocellaris has adopted the GTBA....woohoo! That was the whole point of getting the reef tank...so I could have my own clownfish/anemone pairing! CUTE!!!
Then I had to run the kids to their activities...just got back in the house and ran to check on the new guy...
and guess where HE is???
IN THE ANEMONE!!!! Hahahahaha!
So the black guy is going strong in the front of the anemone and the the orange guy was hiding behind and underneath it...
Hope the anemone is up for it! I'm not too worried...it's looked good since I got it...eats very well...and the tips have 'bubbled' too...
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all's still well come morning!

This variant is marketed by my wholesaler here as black perculas, with a markup to match. Because the term is also used for a number of other clownfish, I think it's best to avoid it. Superonyx sounds nice
For those of you who are wondering....here's his daughter (hopefully! When she starts to breed, I will swap the pairs out and do some inbreeding to try to fix things a little)
