Hello to all! My name is Mark and live in Harlingen in deep South Texas. I do not have a reef tank but have been facinated with the hobby for 30 years. I even attended a reef conference in Scottsdale, Arizona about 20 years ago. Guest speakers included Delbeek, Sprung, Addey, Turlock, Moe and other famous guys I can't remember. I recall the hot topics were close to the same as today. I think the audience was hoping for a fight between Sprung and Addey over Berlin vs Algae turf scrubbing! Back then there was little or nothing on the internet so I read every book I could get my hands on. Any way I was fortunate to stumble onto this site. I plan on getting a reef tank as soon as I read all the threads which should take me about two years!

Hey all been surfing around here for years and finally joined. I have been in this hobby for over twenty years and have seen the hobby change sooooo much. My approach to the hobby has been the kiss rule (keep it simple stupid). Besides adding skimmers to my tanks and now looking at building a LED lighting system I like to keep it dummy proof and easy.

Howdy gang! What a wealth of information here at RC. I kept freshwater fish when I was a kid and progressed onto saltwater and then had several reef tanks. I have been out of the hobby for a few years and am just now setting up a nano reef with my kids. We are starting with a nano due to an upcoming move next summer. In the meantime, I'm in the planning stages for a 120g for after the move. This site has given me so many great ideas for my future tank. Thanks to all who contribute!

Cheers,
Chris

A 120 is a great size to have, it opens the door for so much more. And to have your kids participate is awesome. It’s funny how much they pick up. When I take my kids to the LFS they point out the different corals and inverts.... I get a little twinkle in my eye.

Got some names in there that are still around. Funny how much we have progressed from the berlin and algae scrubber but at the same time still use a lot of the same concepts.

Be sure to impart your wisdom to those that need it. I like the idea of the LED lighting. Maybe one of these days I will start to set some money aside to eventually make one.

Hello!
My name is Matt and I'm just about to start my adventure in the saltwater world. My GF has a 15.5 gallon reef tank at her house and I have been learning as much as I can taking care of hers. Now I want one of my own.

So, after doing much research on this site I've decided to begin a 10G tank, just for starters.

Thanks for all of the information I have found browsing these forums!

Joe from San Diego, Ca... I bought a 70T reef tank that was well established with rock and live sand about 6 mos about when my house caught on fire from my planted tank on my second floor. The lighting caught on fire on my tank and poof out of the house for 6mos during a rebuild. Luckily nothing wrong with the Reef Tank and its been cycling with for 6mos. I have tons of coraline algae growning thousands of copepods a very happy flase percula clown fish, a new 8 line wrasse, a couple of blue chromis, Inverts are an emerald green crab about 20 snails and 20 various snails, two peppermint shrimp i haven't seen anysince day one that i put them in there. Now i have diatoms and red slime bacteria and starting to see some green hair algae growing. I have not been doing a great job with my water changes but it looks like i am going to have to get on a good maintenance schedule with us moved back in. I really enjoy this site.

Hello,

I am somewhat new to reefcentral.com so I thought I would say Hi. I love looking at some of the big tanks on this site. I am currently building a 280 gallon system and will consult this site for any issues that come my way.

Hi,
I've been lurking around here a bit and finally joined so I could participate! My husband and I have had saltwater tanks for the last 3 years. We currently have a 29biocube thats been going for a year that we downgraded from 100g to. We are working on a 90g custom build right now, and hope to have it running in the next 3 weeks. Thanks!!!

:wavehand: hey everyone. just started a 14g bc nano for clowns and softies. i'm super new, had no knowledge whatsoever when i purchased/setup. learning as much as i can as i'm going along. made a tank thread so you can watch as i master or fail at this :mixed: happy reefing!

Hey everyone - my name is Mike. I just inherited a 90 gallon tank / sump setup from a family member, and this will be my first tank larger than 20 gallons or so.

I put everything together last night and did some water tests along the seams to try and test for leaks. The rest of the water may or may not go in tonight.

I have a concern, though not a large one. The tank is on the first floor of my condo, and there is a basement below me. I've been told that full, my setup should be just under 1000 pounds. It is sitting on hardwood floor in the corner of a room (near more support I'd imagine???)....should I worry?

The condo was built three years ago and seems very strong. My electrician was out last week and I asked him about the structural support under the tank (aka under the floor, in the ceiling of the basement), and he said everything looked strong. The LFS laughed and said "dude don't worry about supporting it until you hit 150-200 gallons, 90 is nothing"....

While I appreciate those comments, it is...my house! So I wanna make sure this tank isn't going to fall through the floor or anything!!!

Any thoughts are welcome . thanks in advance!!!!

A 10 gallon nano will be great to start off with, it'll force you to stay on top of all your parameters. Good luck.

It seams that more and more people seem to steer away from the undergravel filters these days, they tend to be used on freshwater but not so much with saltwater. It's believed that they trap detritus that will eventually raise your nitrate levels. Unless you're diligent in keeping it clean it's going to become a problem.

However a lot of people successfully keep tanks without an external sump. I always recommend having a protein skimmer to help remove fish waste and other contaminates. They make them either for an external sump or a hang on back type that will fit off to the back of your tank.

San Diego is a great place to be for the hobby. A lot of reefers there. If you haven't already, protect your tanks power outlet with a GFCI and an AFCI. It will greatly decrease the chance of a fire starting again.

Wow a 280, I wish I had one that big. That is such the perfect size tank. The possibilities are virtually endless wen it comes to stocking them. Good luck, and be sure to start a thread documenting your progress.
