If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Just wondering if it is normal to find bristle worms in live rock when you first get it? Should I continue to pull them out?

Well, I have two small ones in my first tank (a 20g). They are fun to watch when I manage to catch sight of them. From what I've read, they are beneficial while they are small. Once they start getting big, however, they are problematic. Some of the sources I've seen say to grab them and extract them as soon as you can. Others say to leave them until they get big and start causing problems.

In the beginning.... bristle worms were considered a bad thing to have in your tank for the sole purpose that some people have an allergic reaction if they get pricked by them. These days they are considered to be a welcomed addition to our clean up crew. They do wonders with food that have fallen into the cracks and help keep the detritus levels down. I would leave them in the tank until they become so big that they no longer need the cover of a crevice or hole in the rock to run to for fear of being eaten by predators.

Hi ALL!!!

Hi ALL!!!

Hi my name is chris... Im new here. Im from malaysia and I have been in the hobby now for over 2 years. I have a 114L 24"x12"x18" glass aquarium. 30% indo pacific live rock. 1 x green tip torch coral, 1 x white green tip rizo, 2 x green striped mushrooms, 3 x red spotted mushrooms, 1 x purple tip bubble anemone and 1 x purple/green moon coral. I have a Maroon Clown, Yellow Tang, Mandarin Gobby and a clown trigger (I know.... but he is well behaved and tame). I have a Marineland Emperor Bio-Wheel hang on filter, an in tank venturi protein skimmer and a Healia C-150 chiller connected to a water pump.
all levels are kept to reef requirements.

My main problem is the mandarin gobby. I recent acquired him from my local lfs. I have waited for my tank to properly mature for the last 2 years before adding one. he seems to be settled in but I am no expert on their behavior. His stomach is very "recessed" (dented inwards) but I have seen him picking at rocks. I do have a reasonable population of what I believe are copepods which came with my live rock. What can I do to improve his health. Im sure his stomach have a little bulge not be recessed..

Please Help!!!!

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!

My name is Jason and this is my first post. I have been reading alot of your posts for a while now and decided to go ahead and dive in. By the way, thank you all for all the information I have been able to gather just reading around on this site. I'm an absolute beginner and have just started my experience. I have currently set up a 75 gal. glass tank (which will become a FOWLR) with 60 #'s LS, +/- 80-85 #'s LR, two (2) Emperor 400's, one powerhead and have been cycling now for about 6 weeks. I have added no livestock yet as I am trying to teach myself patience from the beginning. I would like to get into a more sophistocated (sump) system in the future, but for getting started, I need to take things slow. I have not seen any significant growth of any kind so far other than some of the rock beginning to turn red, purple and kind of blueberry blue in several areas. My rock was uncured when I got it, so I figured it would be wise to take my time and let the rock do its thing for a while. I have no plans at this time to get into a reef with this system, but that's not to say that my ambitions won't change with some experience. Anyway, that's where I am at this stage of my new adventure and I just thought now would be a good time to introduce myself and seek any specific advice anyone would like to hand out. Thank you in advance to anyone who might like to offer advice to a complete beginner and I look forward to talking to you all. I have included a (poor quality) photo of my tank in it's current state. Take care everyone.

If you just got the dragonette and your tank is full of pods then all you can do is wait and see. If you see him snipping at the rock then he's eating, and as long as he keeps it up he'll have a full bully before long. Before I tore down my tank to move I had a mandarin that after about 6 months in the tank took a liking to frozen mysis and brine which was awesome, he still picked at the rocks but came out during feeding time to partake.

It's good that you are starting out slow and exercising patients. Like the aquascaping, it looks nice. that red and purple stuff that is growing on your rock is coralline algae and is a welcomed site for a lot of reefers (it shows that they are doing something right) I don't know if you are testing the water for ammonia, ph and nitrites, hopefully you are because that's the only way to ensure you have cycled your tank. If you haven't already read through this thread because it's packed full of great information that new comers need to know.

Be sure to start a thread of your own to document your progress and others can follow along and offer advice along the way.

New from Ohio! Had a 125 reef tank setup but just took it down, don't worry plans are to setup a 40 breeder so I still have a reef tank going . . . the 125 got to be too much for me! I have been keeping fish over 10 years and currently have 3 freshwater tanks setup a 125 gallon Monster fish tank, 110 gallon community tank, and 55 gallon piranha tank.

Not my first time visiting the forum just hadn't joined . . . needed some advice and got it! Now I just have to find a 40 breeder and make my sump, should be a relatively simple but fun project!

2nd Time Around

2nd Time Around

Hello all,

Well, this is the second time starting from scratch and it's good to see that RC is still here and the number one source for information.

10 years ago we had a 55g FOWLR that we converted to a reef but with the addition of our child decided to tear it down due to our new found lack of energy. Times have sure changed and the technology along with it. This forum was a great help to us then and has already helped reintroduce us back into the hobby once again.

Current system is:

35g Rimless Cube (no sump this time)
AC70 Filter (will use for carbon, phosban, etc.)
CPR AeroForce Skimmer
(2) Koralia Nano 425
AquaticLift 4 bulb T5HO Lighting
40lbs. Fiji LR
4" Sand bed

We're in our 4th week since set up and enjoying the diatom bloom phase at this point (not). Looking forward to a more stable system in the next month or so and to the introduction of some corals.

Happy Reefing!

hello,
I have been lurking for a lond time and finally joined we had a 125 fowlr for 2 years, after alot of debating decided it was just to long so we are building a 90 gallon and want to try some corals ect this time.

Sounds like you got things under control. Be sure to start a thread with your system.

I can see how a 125 can be too big, good to know that you didn't quit just got a size that is more suited to your needs.

Hi all!!

Hi all!!

Good evening Reef Central, Im glad to have found such a vast site of information for things to come. Im really excited for what this new hobby will bring. Hobby seems to cut it somewhat short. I dont think I have ever stood and stared for hours at a "hobby" before hehe. That being said, I just started about a month and a half ago ... thus starts the story.

My wife and I went to Florida (Cape San Blas) for our ten year anniversary back in August. While there, we happened upon a "hermit crab" that at the time we thought would be really cool to take back home to our kids. We really where kind of naive, because the hermit crab that we thought was a land crab (we live in Iowa, who woulda thunk a hermit crab was a salt water animal, hehe), actually needed salt water. So on our drive back home we stopped into a pet store in Tennessee to pick up a 10 gallon tank. Decided to dump in the sand we brought back from the beach, a few shells, added some salt water to a feed dish and stuck Bob in it. He proceeded to suck up about three or four refills. So we got back home, filled up the 10 gallon with saltwater, let it cycle, added some live rock and a red footed conch, added a clown fish and some more live rock and here we are.

I was hooked a few weeks ago and now my wife is talking about wanting a larger tank. I threw out a 90 gallon idea for our living room and she likes it. WOOHOO!!! hehe

The 10 gallon is doing really well, PH-8.4, NO2:0-.25ppm, NO3:20ppm(coming down from 40 just a few days ago), Ammonia:0-.25ppm.

We have all kinds of stuff growing. Ill get some pics for some identification help because some of the things I cant find any google images for.

Thanks

Chad
