If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello ALL. Not really new to here or the site. Ive been in the hobby for about 10 years. Started with a 75 gallon. Of course went to a bigger tank, a 225 gallon. Then was setting up for a 135 gallon plumbed into the same system that the 225 was running on. Long story short, divorced and now and with my girlfriend that is into the hobby. YAY!!!! About 6 months after setting up the tank at her house, the center brace cracked. The tank is only 3 years old, and Ocieanic would not cover the 10 year warrenty. Ocieanic did send me a new top to replace the broken one, this took about 7 weeks to get. Went to break the tank down to replace the top, put all fish and corals in a cooler and rocks/water in trash cans. The next morning i checked the fish and corals were all fine. 4 hours latey all are were dead, the heater stuck on!!!!!!!
Ended up some buttons we had was the only thing that survived. So here is some pics of starting completly over. We have the Racoon Butterfly in as a temporary. In 4 hours he had all the rock anemones gone. Our intentions are to just stay with just soft corals. So here we are.

Way to stick with the hobby. Many would have been discouraged and gave up on the hobby.

It's been a long while

It's been a long while

since I posted here! My user id is still active too!

I had to take my humble little reef down about a few years ago when business got busy and had to rebuild the house. My seaclone mod is still posted too! I can barely remember some of the early member's names but Larry Maras (didn't he start this forum?), JohnL and Minderaser come to mind...

Hope to restart a reef tank soon and post more often.

Wow, reef central is the place to share knowledge!

Hey, guys I'm new to the boards. I have read tons of posts on here, I finally signed up and here I am. I have only been in the the hobby about a year but its definately turned into a passion. I'm currently still working on stablizing my nitrate and phosphates, adding a denitrator in the next couple days, and still waiting for my ATS to do something :+/-

Wow, you really are old school. You know there is a thread still floating around about how RC has evolved to what it is today. Some of the original founders have moved on and others are innactive but there are still some old timers around, and they are all the moderators and administrators.

I know that nitrates and phosphates are the hardest thing to control, look up carbon dosing, more spacifically vodka and see if that may be an option for you. I do it and have very very low nitrates and phosphates.

Hi everyone! Have been reading this site for a while now, and decided to register and join in a couple days ago.

I have/had a few fresh water aquariums for a while now and just started getting into marine. I didn't know hardly anything about 2 months ago, but after reading and reading and talking to LFSs and more reading I'm about to finally take the plunge and start my first marine aquarium with the wife.

Hopefully I can get a lot of help here as I go, and hopefully share a lot of what I've learned as well. C-ya in the forums!

Hey everyone, kinda new to the hobby, looks like i came to the right place for information. I got a 30 gal tank going FOWLR, maybe i will get a reef tank going later on after i gain a little knowledge. I have question right out of the gate. Will snails climb their way out of the tank?

Snails won't climb out of the tank, however they might come out of the water, not realizing it but return back shortly after, you won't see them on the outside of your tank though.

The only reason I ask, I had one just the other night climb up my heater an onto the cord, it was maybe a quarter of an inch above the water.

So its time to introduce myself I suppose!

My name is Tom and Ive been lurking in the shadows of this forum for a bit now. Ive done A TON of research about this hobby, and decided to dive in finally after careful consideration. I enjoy slow, tedious projects/hobbies that require a lot of detail and know how. Isn't this the perfect hobby for me? Lol. I have spent hundreds of dollars already on books, and spent hours and hours researching, while loving every second of it! I am very excited to start my journey of creating a living world of amazing species right in my home!

I have been purchasing equipment now for the past few weeks. I will be starting to plumb some of this stuff together this coming week I believe. The time has almost arrived. My setup so far:

Marine Land 75g tank w corner overflow/oak cabinet
AE Tech Protean 400 sump w/built in ETSS skimmer & fuge
AquaticLife Programmable 6x54w Lamp T5 HO w/LED
MagDrive 9.5 return pump
MagDrive 7 skimmer pump
2x Koralia Evolution 750gph
2x Koralia Evolution 1050gph
Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Elite w/Net

I plan to go with sand, LR rubble and cheato in the fuge. Ill be using the Reefkeeper to regulate heating, wavemaking and monitoring pH and ORP. Ill use it for ATO in the future as well when Im ready to do that. I love the idea of being able to be sent a text message or an email if any parameters fail!

100 lbs of live rock, with 2-3 inch sand bed

After the tank is cycled I plan to use a CUC consisting of:
5xcerith
5xnerite
5xnassarius
1xemerald crab
2xscarlett hermit
MAYBE a serpent/brittle star (those legs kinda freak me out still)

Ill start off with that, and add more if its deemed necessary I suppose. I would rather start off conservative as opposed to heavy and watch my CUC die off to starvation.

For my fishes:
2xclowns
1xyellow tang (or a black tang if i can get my hands on a small one!)
1xorchid dottyback
2xgobies
1x fairy wrasse

Fishes are a long way off as of now...I suppose I might have changes/new additions by then, who knows!

Other Inverts:
2xpeppermint shrimp
2x skunk shrimp
1x pistol shrimp

For corals Ill be starting with hardy, easy to keep ones in the beginning. I would like to have some stony corals and anemonies later when the tank has become stable months down the road.

Well, I guess thats about it for now. Ill be taking lots of HD pics along the way, and post a thread detailing my progress throughout my journey. I look forward to making friends, and sharing information with everyone here. Thanks for reading!

that is a pretty good right up, I would copy and paste it in a new thread so that others can see what your plans are and watch your progress. Seems like all your decisions are made with research, keep it up. hope to see a thread of your new 75 gallon tank real soon.

Good morning everyone :) another new guy to the forum here.

Have been reefing for about 5years now cant remember how long exactly still taking in this coffee to wake brain up.

my current tank setup:
-36X30X18
-single 250W hqi (upgrading to a dual bulb setup this week i hope)
-2 vortech mp10's goign to add either another 10 or just get a 20 to push water from the side and let the 2 10s push from the back.
-BM150 with aquabee 2000/1 or something like that...
-dual 2littlefishes Rx 1 for carbon, 1 for rowaphos
-Dosing i am using a Medical Doser with dual line setup doses 1.5ml per min and i honestly cannot reacall how much i am dosing per day. The tank has been on idle for the last 3 - 5 months...

-SPS Dominated, mostly ORA, and some Tyree with my pleasure to say i have successfully been growing a good old Purple Monster for the last year. I got it from a very well known reefer on here, he got tank of the month twice cannot remember the name however.

Fish:
-2 Bartlet anthias
-1 Hippo for the kids and wife
-2 clowns True percs for the kids and wife ofcourse
-1 coris wrasse
