If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello all. Been in the hobby for years and just caught the big tank bug. I have just set up a 280g mixed reef with 55g sump and 100g rubbermaid with DSB and live rock. I got a lot of ideas from RC and finally decided to join.

Just wanted to finally introduce myself.. Names Corey, been working with different tanks for about the past 10 years. Started off in freshwater, moved to salt and then took about a 8 year break... Then about 2 years ago i picked up a 29 gallon freshwater tank kit from the LFS and got the bug again. Been over 2 weeks now since i converted to salt and so far so good!

Just starting out.

Just starting out.

Hello. I just purchased my first tank. Its a 36 gallon bow front. My boyfriend is helping me out with all the technical stuff. We are starting it off with just live rocks. Then gradually getting fish once we have it running right. Are there any sites that are recommended for what fish are able to housed together? Thanks.

Hello,

I am still kinda new to reefing but not fowlr. Planning large tank in basement, right now 110g in breakfast room.

Hi all ,I have had salt tanks off and on for the past 15 years .Thought a 12 gallon nano would keep me happy.Wrong!!!! so now I am setting up a 40 gallon to go along with it

Hello everyone I'm Ron, I just got started doing my "research" on reef aquariums. I definitely am here to learn from the pros :) I hope my noob questions don't aggravate you guys too much.

Cincinnati Reefer is on board!

Hello, I am new to saltwater and have been cruising this site and soaking up information for a while now. I thought I should drop in here and introduce myself.

I've been keeping freshwater fish for about 3 or 4 years now and I've decided to finally take my 210 gallon tank and turn it into the saltwater reef tank I bought it to be nearly 2 years ago!

I plan to utilize a deep sand bed, LED lighting, algae filtration, kalkwasser, an apex controller, uv sterilizer, and a few other methods of filtration/water conditioning.

In closing I want to thank everyone that contributes to this site. I've learned so much over the last year reading on here and doing my research that I finally feel prepared to operate a successful reef system. To give back I've decided to make a video documentary of sorts on YouTube. At the current time I've added 2 videos so far and I'm about to upload my 3rd.

Thank you all!

:spin2:Hello everyone my name is Jamal2000. And I 'am new to reef central. My first reef tank was a 20gal fish only, then to 65gal reef:soft corals and some mushrooms. Now I'am trying my luck with 180gal reef,it has build in overflow box's. Looking for good P-skimmer for around 300 to 500 dollar's?

Finally introducing myself.

Name is Brian and I'm located in Columbia, MD. Have been lurking kind of on the board since I got started back in 2009 and just recently started getting more active.

Since I got started I went from a 40g, to a 65g, to a 120g. From "I don't think I will have corals since they sound so hard to take care of" to "hmm.. how many Trachyphlliidae can be in the same tank". From single strip fluorescent to phoenix 14k 250w. It's been fun. And I have a storage room with all the old equipment.. it adds up.

My reef tank has become my little zen garden as I clean it, argue with the RBTA's that move to sit on the latest frags, and plucking the tomato clown in the head when he comes trying to nip at me as I clean.

Despite all my growth in the hobby I still have a ton to learn and will lose a coral frag that I thought was doing well and will recover a frag that I thought was pretty much dead. In the past few months I've turned more to understanding the chemistry of my tank as I work with Kalk and Mag to bring things into place.

I have also learned that no matter how much I read about things.. that sometimes my tank is just going to be a little different for some reason or I just don't understand the "Why".

I am trying to get to the point where I stop messing with the tank.. in the past few months I have been move PH's around to see about improving flow, pulling out some rocks, breaking up a few colonies, adding a few frags. I want to let the tank grow and settle in but it's so hard to keep my hands out!

My current set up is 120 dual overflow through a wall to a 40g sump of live rock and skimmer. I have a lot of live rock.. a bit too much but I'm resisting the urge to re-aqua-scape everything right now... Must... Resist....

For flow Mag 7 and 2 koralia 4, 2 Evolution 1400, and 1 Koralia 3. I'm tempted to say either I have too much flow or haven't figured out how to use the flow the best way.. but things seem pretty happy. I have a 30g rubbermaid can for the Tzune ATO w/ Kalk.

In the last few weeks I have raised my 2 250w 14k phoenix + 2 T5HO actinic lights fixture up to about 18" inches above the water line and everything in the tank seems much happier.. even the clam that has decided to camp out in the middle of a zoa colony.

Livestock: I am trying to figure out if I want to add any more fish.. luckily I'm good a resisting impulse buys on fish.. not so much on corals :-P

Just stopped by to say hello. I just got a 150 gal tank and am ready to dive into this hobby of reef keeping. i would like to start off with the essential equipment that I am going to require to get started. Then we can get into the nice to have stuff.

I see there are lots of helpful and knowledgable people here and I look forward to learning as much as I can.

Thank you.

Hello I'm Bobby. I have two tanks, a nice 5 gallon Pico tank I picked up really cheap that I couldn't pass up and a 56 gallon reef ready with that was a room divider tank so the over flow is on one side but my boss gave it to me so I can't complain. The 5 gallon tank has two snails, four hermits a yellow tail damsil, a big coral banded shrimp and some brown button pulips. I have a old school whisper hob 5-10 with a bunch of live rock rubble and the Bio foam filter, cleaning and moving the water. Though I thinking of added a little macro algae in there and drilling holes in the cover and putting led lights threw the holes to make a mini fuge. The 56 gallon is epmty for now though I heavily modified it since it was giving to me. Ill list the changes later. The 5 gallon I'm going to let run for a few months and let things grow so i can use some sand and rock out of it to seed the bigger tank. I got the 5 gallon fully stocked with everything in it . Though to move it I had to tank out most of the rock (almost all 15 pounds worth)and half the water. I rearranged the rocks the way I think they look best with all the pretty purple , green, red coraline algae showing. Its been a week now and see all sorts of new things growing. We had to remove the bottom pulips from the rock when moving the rock but were the were before there is slither stalk growing already. The colony only had eight pulips a week ago and now has ten. I have four very pretty orange feather dusters growing on the base rocks in different spots. On one rock there are five to six feather dusters of different colors. Some white and gray, some brown, or at least I hope they are feather dusters lol. I noticed to on a rock the was at the bottom before and now on top has a very white looking thing growing on it. A sponge maybe. Its soft to the touch, with have to see how it evolves. The shrimp is very lively. The other Guy fed him peices of dried blood worms on the end of a wood skewer. Boy does he goes nuts when he sees that skewer in the water amd you can feel him tug on it. Well anytime that food touched the water the hole tank goes nuts even the two scarlet hermits that I only see at night come running out to feed. I did change the lighting set up. The Guy used the tank as a open top with a movable lamp for lighting. I am useing the hood that came with the tank with a 26w white and blue florencent coral bulb. Though the first day the tank temp went up three degrees so after the first day I modified it. I drilled several holes at one end and added a two inch 12 volt blower from a rear projection TV to remove the heat. Since I had to add the 12 volt power source I added a white moon light with a home made dimmer from a 50k ajustable resister I glue a plastic tube to and put it threw a hole in the hood. Now have dimming moon lights. I also added a few UV leds that peak at about 405 NM though it might be two low might have to change them to blue leds that peak at 460 NM. But the new growth could be from the purple lights. Not sure yet. Time will tell. The Guy said he never changed the water in the tank due to the size just topped it off. I have to add about a 1/2 to a full cup a day to keep the salinity at .1025 . I tried to post pics but for some odd reason it said upload failed. Oh well

Hello Everybody I'm Eric. I am new have had fresh in the past and still do. I have decided to try salt. I have two large tanks a 150 and a 125 and I plan on connecting the whole system since I have a whole room I have dedicated to this. I am still trying to learn but I am looking at fowlr in the 150 but I don't have anything set in stone. I am in the central new york area so if anyone is in the area and you have some good information please share. One thing I do know is I am taking it slow.

aha! after posting a few things and whatnot i found this thread. sorry i did things a tad backwards lol. well, here it goes: My name is James. i live in a small town outside of san antonio texas. For the past 10 years or so i been really in to saltwater esp. reefs. Prior of course, Freshwater. gone from a simple 55gallon to a 125. now have a 180 deep. gone through more diy sumps than i can count, made more mistakes than i care to Tell, and learned way more about this hobby than i thought was immaginable! i love corals... ok Australian Corals now! ive gotten rid of just about everything in my tank to stay primarilly with those. done bare bottom, DSB, protien skimmers only, bio balls (uggg), omg... refugiums! now ive gotten all the hype out of the commercial sales end of this hobby and run 2 protien skimmers (octos.), 200 micron filter bag, and LR with a 1inch'ish SB. i do 30 gallon WC's every 30-60 days, and all i check now is salinity upon WC's. i Do though use the pos apogee par meter just to keep in sink with how my t5's are doing for replacement. i run dual photoperiods per 24hrs. and have a 40 gallon corner dips. tank for the wife and her fox and goniopora (ug), but hay she's happy! i prolly log in about 5 hours a day into my tank just thinking, playing around, feeding, etc. I completely hooked and the more i learn the more hooked on this hobby i Get! so there's the shpeel. and Hello everyone!
