hello all just gettin started in the hobby, started with a 75 gallon piranha tank and now gettin a 55 gallon reef goin. lookin to learn everything i can possibly cram into my head from reef central

Hey RC,

My name is James and I've always had a fish tank while growing up, fresh water, and have wanted to step into saltwater keeping for quite some time. After nine years of no aquarium I set up my first saltwater tank about eight months ago, OCT 2010. I've been bitten by the saltwater bug for sure. My DT tank is a 60 gallon mixed reef. I've also got a species only tank where my Bimac octopus calls home. Both systems are thriving. I'm by no means a saltwater nut and that's why I'm here. You can never stop learning.

Introduction!

Introduction!

Hi! My name is Sarah. I'm pretty new this hobby. I've had a saltwater tank for almost 2 years now. My first year was pretty much all mistakes, so I've done a lot of learning. Right now I have a 29 gallon (tall) tank with 1 clown named Leviathan (I think he's a false percula, but he won't sit still long enough to count the spines!), 1 black longspine urchin, 1 emerald crab, 1 turbo snail, 1 turban snail, 1 bumble bee snail, and 1 nassarius snail. It's kind of an odd group, but they keep me company and don't bother each other. I tell my friends instead of calling it "my fish tank," I should call it "my invertebrate tank."

I only have a hang-on-back filter, but I am under the impression that my tank is small enough to get away with that, and I check my chemical levels regularly (never had a problem except during an early algae bloom). Also, I have an air pump attached to bubble wands to increase the airflow since my filter pump isn't very strong. I have some relatively high-range bulb for daytime, but I don't recall exactly what it is. I know it's probably not good enough for most corals, but it's better than the one that came with the tank.

Anyway... That's pretty much it. I'd love to have a bigger tank, but my living situation is never vary stable. I'm a student, so it could be years before I have a semi-permanent living location. In two years, I've already transported my tank three times. In the next few years, I shouldn't have to move quite that often. Even so, I don't think I could move something bigger than 30 gallons even occasionally.

Nice to meet everyone! All advice welcome!

hi all,

new to hobby and RC. Got a 30 gal tank with sump of around 8gal (can't fit anything bigger unfortunately), about 10kilos of live rock, live sand for substrate(approximately 2-3inches deep), tmc compact 300 skimmer(still undecided on how good this is. its my first skimmer so nothing to compare to) 5inch live sand in sump with cheato algae. For circulation im using a seio 320 and my return pump which is a eheim 1000, also i have a eheim external filter which has filter sponges and activated carbon(not sure if this is any good it was left over from my old tropical tank) figured it wouldn't hurt and would add to circulation. Got a little uv steriliser which is rated for 200ltr tanks. Im going to add another seio when i get some spare cash. lighting at the mo is 2t5 marine white and 1 actinic t8 blue and 1 white t8. any comments on suitability of my kit would be much appreciated. not the best i know but all i can afford at the mo. tank has been running for 2 months introduced some cuc after 5 weeks when all water test came back good.

anyways thats me thanks all for advice and information on this site:spin2:

regards

Hello to all.

Hello to all.

My name is Reese , I have always been amazed by SW Reef tanks.
I have been reading the sticky's by Waterkeeper, have picked up on lots of info in just a few day's and laughed quite abit to boot.
A co-worker at the station bave me 50 gal. freshwater tank last week.
But I am leaning toward a 150 or so after what I've been reading.
Still gathering info on sump's and such.
I'm a firefighter/medic with grandkids and think this will be a good thing to teach my grand's quite a few lessons along the way.

Hello from Missippi :wavehand:

After years of freshwater tanks, I'm finally switching to saltwater. Looking forward to learning a lot from everyone here.

New in many ways

New in many ways

Hey, I am new to salt water. After many small freshwater tanks I want to get into salt. I am willing to do some work to keep the cost down but I need to know, since I plan on going for a 50-60g tank should I, try to build my own, find one second hand or just bite the bullet and get one from a shop? Thanks!

Hello, I'm Angie :) I'm not really "new" to the hobby bit I am new to this forum. I've had a 75 gallon reef tank for 5 years and just recently purchased a 175 gallon that we are having installed in the wall. I now feel brand new at this again. I've gotten pretty good at taking care of my "established" tank but I don't remember much about the starting up process and I have a million questions!!

Hey all, I've been reading so much helpful info here! Thanks a ton. I've got my tank set up and cycling for the past week and I thought I would introduce myself here.

My tank is a 75 gallon with 20 sump - you can see the progress to date at my blog http://prairiereefproject.wordpress.com Check out the pages (top right column) to see the setup, a start to a shopping list (hasn't been narrowed down) under current stock and real time updates to water tests.

Thanks again!

Hello everyone! Ive kept two FW Planted tanks for about a year now. One 30gl SA Cichlid tank and a 10gl tiger barb ecosystem. I'm reading up on many different topics here on RC and will be converting my 30gl to a reef setup w/ a spare 10gl for the sump. Thanks for providing a wealth of information, so I don't screw up too much :)

Hi everybody!

I'm Ryan and I've been keeping saltwater fish for about 8 years and working on my little reef for about 5 years.

My current setup is an AGA 75 with 1 pre-drilled corner overflow. Sump is a little frankensteined contraption with an acrylic sump box sitting in a large (50 gallon) sterilyte tub. All mechanical and chemical filtration done in the acrylic while the EuroReef Skimmer and return pump (SICCE Syncra) sit in the tub.

The aquarium has about 120lbs of mixed rock, and about 60lbs of aragolive sand (black and white). For current, the Sicce is pushing from the sump and I also have a pair of Hydor Koralias (a #1 & #4 I believe) constantly moving.

My lighting has been a thing of difficulty lately as I recently killed my VHO setup (maybe a little old school since the flourescents I'm reading about today are T5HOs). I wanted to try something different and just purchased and setup a Marineland Reef Capable LED hood w/ 54 1w LEDs. It is a little duller than my VHOs were but I love the current shimmer it creates! I'm thinking about working through my VHO setup to see what really failed... maybe I can save some of it and wire in some additional T5HOs... we'll see!

As far livestock...
0.0.1 Percula Clown
0.0.2 Ocellaris Clown
0.0.2 Yellowtail Damsels
0.0.1 Strawberry Basslet
0.0.1 Bangai Cardinal (currently MIA)
0.0.1 Blue Damsel
0.0.1 Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

Also have some coral and sessile invertebrates...
Some Mushrooms
Lots of Star Polyps
Zooanthids
Leather
Torch
Hammer
Crocea Clam
and a few other things I can remember right now...

If I figure it out, I'll put a picture or two up here...

About 1 week before VHOs died...

Hello all, looking to jump into this salt-water part of this hobby, Currently am running a 55gal African Cichlid setup. I Don plan on doing anything over the summer, will start in September I just don't have the time and i want to slowly get the stuff i need to do this properly. but These forums will be my reference guide!

Hello all, just stopping in to say hello and my names geoff. Currently been in the hobby for about 5 years and transisition from a total volume 230 gallon up to a 500 plus. Cant wait to share the experience with everyone...

G'day everyone, fairly new to the hobby, ive been keeping fresh water since i was tall enough to gaze through the glass and have always been fascinated by fish.

When i finished school and started working full time i finally had enough money coming in to set up my first marine system.

That was around September last year and i now have 185 Gal reef with mostly lps, a few softies and a few sps.
I am still struggling with issues such as lighting and keeping nitrates down but with every failure i learn a bit more. If any one could give me advice on nature nitrate reduction it would be greatly appreciated.

My next project is a 25 gal nano sps tank, ive started a thread for it asking people for advice on filtration set ups, so everyone feel free to drop by the thread and let me know ideas or post some pics of your filtration setups.

Cant wait to hear from you, cheers

Hamish

I'm glad this thread was started, the amount of newbies saying hello is incredible, welcome to you all.

Regards

Mike

Hey All! Im new to the board, but not really new to the hobby, I've been out of it for about 15 years, but recently decided to get back into it. I'm currently setting up a 20 gallon reef in my office, but also have equipment to set up a 75gallon reef as well, everything is there except the water, rock and sand. I want to finish the 20 first and start stocking before I work on the 75. I set-up my first fishtank 30 years ago, and have had something going ever since, although recently its been freshwater planted tanks (i just recently parted out of my 150 gallon FW Planted Tank to pay for the reefing). I'm exicted to get back into reefing!

Hey everyone, new to saltwater though I've kept freshwater for years with a desire at one point to get a saltwater tank. Then recently I purchased a used 55ish gallon aquarium without really looking at it till I brought it home. The tank had been drilled at one point and they had covered the holes with a block of acrylic and plenty of silicon. The tank had most likely been saltwater at start and converted to freshwater and sat empty for quite some time on a guess due to it being a (seemingly old) oceanic tank. The drilled holes basically made me give in and decide to use it as my first go at saltwater after fixing it up.

Though enough about the tank my names Andrew and though I just registered I dropped by a few times researching if I really wanted a tank at the time. This project will probably run me to the end of the year before anything is setup with all the DIY work it will take. I can't wait to get started and I'll probably have questions later based on the holes already in the tank once it is all fixed up.
