Hi,
I just signed up here. I'm getting back into the hobby after being away from it for a long time. Technology has surely changed since then.
I'll be setting up a 200 galon plus reef aquarium soon. I'm still in the process of finding a suitable aquarium.
I currently have about 400 lbs. of base rock from my old setup. It didn't use to be all base rock. I guess that's the price you pay for going on hiatus from the hobby.
Right now I'm looking at a used 210 gallon Oceanic with stand and canopy for $750.00 that is currently up and running at the current owner's home with freshwater. Does this sound like a fair price???
If I decide to go new, I'm looking at Deep Sea Aquatics, which was started by some former employees of Oceanic and Great Lakes Aquariums.
I would love to get some feedback on these two products if anyone has any.

So I'm not exactly new to the hobby or RC, but rather re-new. It has been years since I had my last reef tank, and so much has changed. I have been a long long time lurker on the forum over the years because I could not ave a tank. However about a month ago my girlfriend was looking at my old poison dart frog set-up (complete with false bottom, water fall, and small river) and asked if I could create a simple reef out of it!!!!!!!! YAY FOR ME!! I WAS GIVEN AN UNPROPTED GREEN LIGHT ON A REEF!!!!!!!! :celeb1: The only sitpulation was no drilling the tank. I think she feel she saved us money by limiting my to HOB but its all good.so for now all i have is a crummy iphone pic. It is a 37 column and about a month old. Scored some free SPS from LFS. Anyways just thought i would say hi so that i could officially not be just a lurker. BTW we have already purchased our next tank lol. Hopefully a build comming on that in the future. Its a 150 already drilled :beer:

I am a newbie to the saltwater world but I am enjoying the hobby. I had 2 clown fish for about 4 weeks and suddenly 1 of them disappeared. What happens to them? I only have snails and shrimp and hermit crabs so far. I want to get a couple of seahorses eventually.
Help!!!!

Good afternoon all,
i have been researching and reading info from this forum for quite some time, and have yet to make my first post to say hi....sooooo.....hello everyone! i recently received a 55g (still sitting in garage) which i plan on making my first build with and have become completely intrigued with giving my go at a saltwater system. I just want to say thank you to all that contribute their expertise and opinions on here, as i have yet to purchase one piece of equipment aside from the tank, and have already learned so much. I am sure to have many more questions in the next few weeks as i slowly start to build my setup. Again thank you to all for such a great forum and for all those that are quick to help newbies like myself.

Hi all,
Yes I'm a newbie to saltwater tanks and have quickly found out that it's an expensive hobby but hopefully well worth it. I have just started with 2 ecopico tanks with the 3 strip lighting. I've put in my first mushroom and a couple of pieces of soft corals and 2 snails in each tank. It looks really nice with just the live rock and sand so it can only get better. Well just wanted to introduce myself and have enjoyed looking at everyones tanks, large and small!!

Hi all! I joined a few weeks ago after re-entering the hobby. I'm 26yrs old, on Cape Cod.
I had a 45g FOWLR that was purchased as a full setup, that was at my parents house as I was in college then beyond. It was a bit neglected during the past few years (I had moved out), so when my parents moved I broke it down to a smaller setup that I could bring to my home (and a less tall tank - those tall narrow tanks are a royal pain for so many things).
It is currently set up as a 20g long tank, FOWLR still, and hopefully within the next year I will be able to re-upgrade it to a 46g bowfront. It still has all the LR from the 45g, so it is pretty darn heavy on the rocks at the moment. I moved the one remaining fish, Lucy the percula clown.
I've been learning quite a lot on here so far, such a wealth of info & experience.
My old 45g:
Current 20g: (Mom "helpfully" washed the rocks - need to seed with some new stuff to hopefully reintroduce the coralline algae and such)

Sorry the new pics are not so good - have been working with the camera to figure out the right settings but not having much luck yet - may have to resort to using the flash.

Hello everyone out there!
I consider myself a Noob, although I did have several marine aquariums over 25 years ago. I can see from my research that things have changed a whole lot since then and I am looking to listen and learn again. I have a brother that is very active in marine aquariums both as a hobby and as a profession, but we don't live close enough for swapping much more than recommnedations and "lore". I quite a bit of scuba, and really appreciate a great reef!
I "inherited" a 80 Gallon Bow-Front aquarium and stand from my mother-in-law, which my wife has asked me to set up in Master Bedroom Sitting Area. So far (1 week now), I have thoroughly cleaned and set up tank, puchased sand (live and bagged, about 65 lbs), base and live rock (80 lbs), and set up water (1.026, 8.2 ph), and started the cycling (testing since 2 days ago). "Cloud Fish" gone with water clearing up nicely. So far ammonia at .50, with remaining NO2 and NO3 at/near zero.
I do not use at this time a sump refugium, and I am utililizing a Emperor 400 with crushed live rock in gray cases, side mounted skimmer. Lighting is a single t5 that came with unit, and I am looking to upgrade this week to a new unit, leaning towards a AquaticLife T5 HO and Lunar Light Fixture (36").

my name is will im from florida.im in the process of setting up a 50 gallon tank(48x18x12) im looking forward to setting it up as a stony coral with some lps,but it being a mostly montipora tank.i love the look of these corals and look forward to using this forum as advice. i have seen a few sps tanks that i have seen from members that i see as inspirations. one being from a member whose name was leonard called the formosa forest. this tank looked so surreal to me. i hope to get my tank to that point only with montipora.

Hey you all out there. Name is Eric and I am in Southern California. I am in the middle of a build. I have somebody building the aquarium for me. It is a 96x30x30 glass aquarium (374 gallons) and currently is sitting empty on its base. The plumbing was just finished. The live sand and rock and water will be going in over the next couple of days. A built-in unit that will cover the area around the aquarium will be installed in a few weeks. I have had freshwater aquariums over a long period of time. This is my first saltwater aquarium. My motto is go big or don't do it at all. This will be a live reef aquarium with many fish (still deciding on exact list), corals, clams, scallops, starfish, snails, hermit crabs, shrimp (pistol, cleaner, banded), maybe a cucumber. I am interested in adding anemones but I have been warned against them. I can't imagine having such a beautiful tank for my family and small children without the ability of having a symbiotic relationship with a clownfish. I have a pretty good idea of the fish I want to add that will be reefsafe. I am very excited and I can't wait to get my fish in. Always, with a lot of patience though.

Some of you have also provided very usable info to head me on the right path. I am new to salt water but have had freshwater aquariums over the past 40 years. I have always wanted a salt system and I am going down that road slow but sure as nothing happens fast in salt. Thanks in advance for you assistance.

Just started a saltwater tank. I havent placed sand, rocks or fish yet but aging the water first to remove chlorine.
I'm planning to get a BIG clownfish and some small ones as I want to breed them and I'm told that females are usually the big ones.
I think my aquarium is 30 gal(I really don't know. this aquarium is kind of a hand-me-down from my parents. It's OLDER than me lol)
Any advice?

Hi,Iam Mike and iam new to this hobby ihave always had freshwater and now have the space and money to setup a sick reef tank. The psycadelic colors of corals and zoo's makes my pupils dialate. If anyone can recommend any books on reefing I would apprciate it. Thanks for all your futher help and knowledge.
