Have done freshwater all of my life. Just set up my first reef tank about a month ago. Always a work in progress (as most of you know).

Hey! My name's Elliott. I'm a 24 year old college student from Oklahoma. I've got an addiction to motorcycles, and a growing addiction to aquariums. I've ran freshwater tanks for a long time, and recently decided to try out marine. My current setup is a 55 gallon with 100lbs of sand and ~32lbs of live rock. It has an overflow setup currently with a 20 gallon sump, red sea berlin pump, and 2 1050 hydor circulators. I've got a Remora S skimmer in the mail, and when it gets here, I plan on pulling out the sump and overflow when it gets here. I'm also planning on adding another ~25lb's of rock within the next week or two. My lighting setup right now is 2 T12's, one 6500k and one F40 full spectrum grow bulb. I plan on changing it out as soon as I find a decent affordable alternative.

Hi

Hi

Hey All,

I'm new to Reef Central (officially), but I have been reading lots of blog posts recently.

I just put together and am cycling an Innovative Marine Nuvo 38. I've had many saltwater tanks in the past, but none for 17 years now.

I've got:

30 lbs live sand and 25 lbs live rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater. I'm getting another 25 lbs of live rock after cycle.
I have one refugium column with standard filter basket and sponges and the other with filter sponge in top chamber and Chemi Pure Elite in other two.
I just added a Hydor Koralia Nano 425 with another on the way.
Also on the way is a Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper Lite.
Aqua Illuminations VEGA also imminent.
Trying to wait for Innovative Marine's new skimmer, but getting a little impatient.

Anyone have any thoughts on clearing up floating crud in the water?

Looking forward to benefiting from y'all's wisdom.

Greg

Hi everyone!

My name is Brandie and I am also officially new to the forum. I have been reading up on some of the posts in the newbie thread, and that made me want to join so I could learn more!

I am currently in the process of upgrading my 60 gallon FOWLR to a 90 gallon reef, and I am trying to nail down my fish list. Just when I think I have it, I always find out some new information that makes me re-think things again LoL.

I recently bought a bonded pair of Fancy Amphiprion ocellaris in addition to the gobies and blenny. As soon as I finish adding some fish, I hope to get things stable enough to try my hand at some hardy corals. =)

Hi everybody,

My name is Mike! I've been researching building and maintenance of reef tanks for a few months now and I'm really interested in the hobby. Currently I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank and as of today I own a 180 gallon acrylic tank with dual overflows! Next step, replacing the carpet with hardwood, then a quality stand for the tank!

Hi all,

My name is Wayne,
I'm getting back into fish again after a long break, I guess if you live in Fiji there's no excuse,
Unfortunately you can't buy any equipment here and I have import everything out of either Australia or the US and it gets expensive, but the live rock, corals and fish are free so it all balances out!!!.
I just finished building a 72" x 24" x 30" glass tank and stand, and I"m just filling it with water for the first time and hoping it will hold together, I also just finished a 3ft x 15" x 15" refugium and the same size quarantine tank with adjustable compartments.
I'm now waiting on all the pumps, protein skimmer etc to arrive.

Hello Reef Central,

My name is Michelle. I am officially a new registered member of the forum. I recently got a 29 gallon Biocube and am loving every minute of it. I have been reading lots of posts for newbies and know I have a lot to learn. My tank was already set up when I bought it so I didn't have to go through all the set up challenges. I have bought a few things but am trying to learn as much as possible before buying too much.

I have already learned a lot from the posts here and from my LFS. Everyone has been helpful. Thank you! I look forward to meeting and talking to everyone and learning as much as I can so I can buy a bigger tank. I think the next big purchase for my tank will probably be new lights so that is the next posts I'll be reading about.

Hello RC! I'm new to saltwater so I thought it best to research research research! Im moving away from plant tanks to a reef tank. And I'm building a 150g at my work with the bosses money so hahaha ya just a little pressure. I have a 50g cube with a canister filter and the back of the tank I am setting up my protein skimmer and such. Lights are a 250w metal halide 8 LEDs and 4 24w t5s ya it looks amazing. I'm looking for some calm in this storm, with one question and fifteen answers it's almost impossible to get started right.

Newbie Setting up a 30gal Nano

Newbie Setting up a 30gal Nano

Hello Reef Central! I'm new to this game but I've been wanting to build a reef tank for a few years now. I have A 30 gal tank and I can't wait to bring out it's Beauty! I named her Nippy in honor of 1 of Doddtown's Finest and my next door neighbor from back in the day (the 80's) the late Whitney Houston. Can't wait to start reefing and swapping information and frags with you all.

1Luv and Happy Reefing to you all!

Hello everyone! I joined about a month ago and figured it was time to get active on this great forum! I have only been reefing for about one year, but it is so addictive that my 72 gallon is already filled with all kinds of corals, my 125 is being filled with corals, and I just set up a 30 breeder frag tank. I hope to learn and contribute here a lot in the future!

Long time reader, first time poster. I am Adam, from Dayton Ohio.

I have had freshwater tanks on and off all my life and my 3 yr old is totally fish crazy...to the point where his birthday party was fish themed and he would rather go to the local Aquarium (Newport Aquarium, Newport KY) then do darn near anything else. A fish lover and SCUBA diver myself I have no issues with this love of all thigs water and fishy, I just never felt confidant in taking the leap into saltwater. I made the decision to take a shot at it, however I am not spending a penny till I am confidant I can make it work well and I know what I am doing (orders of the wife).

The tank will be as much for me as it is my 3 yr old. Currently has his own fish tank consisting of a glass bowl and a beta, and he is in the rutine of everyday when he gets up feeding his beta and my fish (10 gal freshwater tank with african cichlids) so I know that he will be a "help" for this tank, I just have to get it right because it will be hard to explain what happened to his friends (he is 3, every fish he "meets" is his friend)

I just wanted to stop in and finally say, "Hi". I've been stalking around on the site for a little over a year and have finally done enough research to take the plunge into starting a tank. I will have a ton of questions as I go and the search button has already been a huge friend of mine.

New to the hobby

New to the hobby

Whats up everyone,

I'm from the NY/NJ area, and while I've kept fresh water tanks in the past, I am brand new to saltwater. I'm still in the research phase of the hobby. So far my only investment has been registering on these forums and purchasing the Complete Idiot's Guide to Saltwater Aquariums, which I just finished reading.

I'm interested in starting a fish-only tank for now. I began my research thinking i would start out with a 55-gallon tank but after reading the idiot's guide, I am now looking in the 75 - 100 gallon range.

My biggest issue at the moment is trying to figure out if my GF's victorian house can support the weight of a tank in the 75-100 gallon range. Once i determine that then i'll be looking to purchase a tank. In the mean time, I started reading The New Marine Aquarium: A step by Step Setup and Stocking guide.

So far, plumbing the system, building a sump and drilling the tank are what intimidate me most. The idiot's guide seems to do a good job of explaining fish compatibility, diets, and proper tank cycling. I plan on doing as thorough a job researching this hobby as possible before getting started.

If anyone can recommend additional reading material, videos, places to purchase equipment, etc. (all advice and mentors are welcome), i would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post!

Well to start my name is Jeramy... a little history i had a tank in 96 that was a pred tank.. I ended up tearing down cause i was very busy with having 3 kids at a very young age just couldn't give both the time/money they deserved.

Anyways now at the ripe old age of 35 i am getting back into the Obsession.. My twin boys are 18 and off to college and my 17 year old daughter has one foot out the door... I know, I know i said i was young.. So as the saying goes when the kids are away the adults will play..

I purchased a complete 180 from a guy in chicago for a 2000.00 which i didn't think was to bad considering the tank alone was a special made Marineland duel overflow 4 sided starphire 1 year old mite i add in perfect condition not one scratch.. I was told the tank was made for a professor at purdue and he backed out on it and thats how he acquired it.. With all the rock and corals and stuff i made out well. The skimmer i am selling cause i want a MRC. The light i am thinking about selling not sure what to do yet so any advice would be welcome.. It is a current USA 72in 3 250 8 T5s and the leds retail 1395.00 I have already purchased 3 12 inch vertex 260s for the tank.. Should i sell light, keep? If sell what price would be fair for both parties?

I will be reading over this forum with a fine tooth comb taking in loads of info knowledge.. ..Anyways Hello to all that read this and thanks for the welcomes in advance sorry if i bored you with a brief history lesson. Thanks Jeramy
