If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello RC! My name is Hayden and I am extremely new to this hobby. I am a fulltime college student double majoring in Exercise Science and Biology Education. I have had a small freshwater tank (10g) for many years, but now that I am finally moving out of the dorms and into my own house I can get a bigger tank! I have enjoyed my small tank, but I have always been very fascinated by saltwater tanks, especially reef tanks. I am looking for any advice on how to go about things since I am so new to the hobby. All i have done so far is bought a 55G bow tank and done some research. Any advice is appreciated! I would also like to keep everything as simple/cheap as possible right now while still having a nice tank.

I've been lurking for months while i set up and cycled my first tank. Figured i should say hello and introduce myself to everyone. My wife and i picked up a Nuvo 38. Have had it set up for a while, live rock and sand in. Amonia spike, then nitrites, and nitrates. Some green hair algae. We now have a pair of clowns, and a blenny, as well as some snails.

We're hoping to get some corals in and try our hand at that.

Thanks to everyone here for all the great info that has let us avoid disaster (so far)

Hello everyone,
I joined Reef Central recently, but haven't introduced myself yet. I hope to get started very soon again after an 8-year absence due to a move. I had a saltwater tank for 15 years. I hauled store-bought RO water upstairs for that whole time. So now, my first purchase was an RODI unit. I found a LifeReef sump and refugium used. Now I'm looking for a ZeroEdge tank. I've read a lot about them here and I still want one. Thanks everyone.

Hello all!

Hello all!

Hi everyone!
First of all, I would just like to say that I have been looking and getting great ideas from Reef Central for a few months now, and figured that I had enough specific questions that I should sign up and just ask them straight out.

I am starting up a 24 gal jbj altered tank with 2 ta 3 small fish and low/med light and med/low flow corals. I should also say that I am a complete newbie to the sw world, but am super stoked and am looking forward to the challenge.

Thanks in advance for everyones advice and words of wisdom, they are greatly appreciated. :)

12g Fluval Edge Reef Build

12g Fluval Edge Reef Build

Hello everyone. I am a noob here to the forums and to SW. I have a 12g fluval edge reef.

9lbs LR (buying more soon)
20lbs LS
Stock HOB filter (was told to eliminate this, but need confirmation on this??)
Also ordered a combo filter/skimmer, but was told this was not needed also) I get conflicting information so I am not sure what to do here.

240 GPH Circulation Powerhead
50W heater

Livestock

2 Percs (Selling one back to LFS)
1 Damsel (Selling back to LFS)
1 Engineered Goby (Going to try and sell to LFS) Getting the impression from other forums that I am overstocked so I do plan on getting selling back three fish, including the goby (found out on forums he will grow to a foot long) :headwalls:

Clean-up crew
5 blue legged hermit crabs
3 Astrea snails
1 skunk shrimp
2 peppermint shrimp
1 snail/slug looking thing without shell (hitchhiker). Need to identify this. I think it is harmless. It only comes out at night and eats algae off the glass and heater, etc.

I am needing advice, since I am a noob, on building my reef. I do not want to modify my tank in any way as I do not have the means to do so....here goes. I want to know what ATO system will work best for my 12g fluval edge. I have looked into the Tunze nano models, but after researching it the one I was looking at that might work is for sumps only. Help??!!

I want to know if I should eliminate the HOB filter/skimmer (once I receive it in mail) altogether and just have my rock and sand as my biological filtration. Those two are my main questions. I have googled these things til my eyes hurt for weeks now and have been unable to find my answers. :reading: :headwally:

I am grateful to become a part of this forum. I am hoping to learn a lot from people who love the hobby and want to help. And, I hope to help others one day that are in the same spot I am in now.

Hello Everyone, been lurking around since I started my tank about 5-6 months ago. I cannot begin to tell you how valuable this site has been for me. There have been so many questions and issues that have come up and RC always provided the answer or some guidelines. Thanks RC!

just a note to say hello and introduce myself

just a note to say hello and introduce myself

Hey everyone...
I have been into salt water for about a year... Kinda happened by accident...
I had a 75 gallon fresh water tank for the last 10 years or so... and one day the tank started leaking all over my living room... I rescued most of the fish and gave them away and swore off fish tanks... I posted something about it on Facebook and the next thing I know.. a friend of a Friend ended up giving me a 175 Oceanic bowfront with all the trimmings... what is a guy supposed to do...
so I have been learning all kinds of things for the last year... finally got some growth going on and my corals are starting to take off...
also I joined a local Reef group on Facebook and found out that a lot of my existing friends were into reef tanks as well...

I also just got my hands on a 45 gallon reef ready tank that I am going to add to my martial arts school...

anyhow,
looking forward to making more friends..

Kevin

Hello, my name is Noah. I live in Alexandria, VA. I am active duty Air Force and I have been in the freshwater hobby for a couple years now, but started to get bored with it. I've been keeping African Cichlids in a 125 gallon tank. I decided to set up a 75 gallon tank for salt water fish and corals. I have a sump for it, but I'm redoing it because it wasnt big enough for the 75 gallon. I'm now using a 36 gallon bowfront as my sump. I have a couple clowns and a couple green chromis. I have quite a few zoanthids in the tank as well. Everything seems to be going okay. I havent killed off anything yet.

I just wanted to introduce myself and say I look forward to making some new friends on here and hopefully learning a few things along the way.

Hello!
New to this hobby (have had freshwater fish for over 20 years) now venturing into this. I'm just doing a LOT of research and learning now before actually setting up everything. Deciding on what fish/corals, timeline, etc. I'm in no hurry and want to make sure I have exactly what I want first.

The tank I'm most likely going to purchase is a Red Sea Max 250. Seems like a good place to start.

Thanks for sharing all your experience. I'm really enjoying learning. ~Cyndy

Hi everyone. I have a Coralife Biocube 29 gallons. I've added coral and now have a Yasha Goby with Pistol Shrimp. They are the cutest.

hi all
I'm out of milwaukee that ended up with a well established 26 gal tank (5yrs)

got some clean up to do and then plan on moving to a much more peaceful tank with more corals

Greetings,

My Name is Chris. I am new to this site, and new to marine tanks. I am looking forward to learning from everyone here as I grow in the hobby.

I do have a question though, not sure where I should post it. I purchased the Red Sea Max 250 yesterday. After getting everything put together, I pre-mixed my salt water (Red Sea Coral Pro) with AquaSafe Plus for the water. I filled the tank last night with only the sand base (live sand) and the water. The water was cloudy during that time, left the pumps on for the night expecting the water to clear up over the night, however it was still milky this morning. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Is this normal or am I missing something. I could really use some help here. Thanks, and again, I am looking forward to learning from everyone.

Chris

Hello everyone. This forum is great. I have been reading the DIY for the last 6 months as I plan to design and build my own reef controller. I know its been done many times but I love doing this stuff and had fresh water tanks for many years and want to make the leap. Thanks for all your help and I hope I can return the favor one day to the next group.

Aha! found the introduction thread!

Hi, my name is Andrea, I'm Italian and I live in London (UK).

I have been keeping FW fish for a couple of years now and I've decided to step into the big blue.

I currently have a 4' tank with discus, rummynose tetras and corys, a 30 litre shrimp tank bursting at the seams with red crystal shrimps, and a small 2' tank with a few otos and rasboras that will become a refugium for the discus soon.

I also have a 90 litre tank (plus 30 litre DIY sump) that used to be a nano reef. I started setting it up beginning of December and it was coming along very nicely. I was really proud of it, but a house move with VERY cold weather and it crashed. It now has live rock and sand, a skunk shrimp, two emerald crabs and a few snails, plus an anemone that is still fighting to stay alive, nothing else.
It is now just keeping these alive for my new tank.

The description of my plans for the new tank are here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2282562

You will find a copy of this introduction there, sorry, I just couldn't find the introduction thread.
