If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey all!

My name is Dean and I'm a 21 year old Aussie!

I've kept fresh water fish for close to 7 years, having some great success with cichlid community tanks and species tanks. I have recently made the, long, hard, arduous but rewarding and exciting jump to reef tanks!

It's been challenging and I love it. I currently have a 64L tank, with 4kg of live rock, CUC (consisting of turbo, strom and hermits) I've now dealt with 2 mantis shrimps. The tank has LED lighting consisting of white and blue lights, it's been running for a month now.

When I'm not obsessing over fish, I'm either obsessing over my kelpie called Billy or Green cheek conure (a small African parrot) called Huey.

And if I'm not obsessing over any animals, it's because I am at work. I work as a Patent Analyst for an independent company in Sydney. We develop comprehensive, accurate and reliable reports for generic and innovator drug companies regarding the patent literature surround their intended design!

New Reefer Here!

Good morning everyone,

I just am about 2 months in to the hobby and am loving it. I have a 90 Gallon Planet Aquarium tank with some new toys as of this week because I had some fish die which has been a mystery. I think they had ICH. Some of my items that I just got are (if you have any advice that'd be great!)

90 Gallon Planet Aquarium Tank
Reef Octopus 180 skimmer
Trigger Systems Emerald 34
BRS Carbon Reactor
Aqua UV Sterilizer 25w
Neptune APEX Gold
Aqua Illumination Hydra 52 x 2
90 lbs of live aqua cultured live rock
Fluval 300w heater

I need all the help I can get so if anyone has any advice, please feel free to share! Thanks!

Hi All,

I am a new reefer. Inherited a Biocube 29 from my parents, who recently retired and downsized into an apartment. So far so good, since the tank had already matured and been in use for 3 or so years when I received it. One of the things I did was upgrade the lighting to use the Rapid LED Aurora Puck with dimmable drivers.

Forgot to add tank specs. Two clowns, a hawk fish and a purple gobi. A variety of snails, several hermit crabs, a fire shrimp, a serpent star (which I haven't seen in weeks) and a little red fish/bottom feeder...don't even know what he's called but he's the bomb. I have a small selection of coral (Green star, Torch, Hammer, Mushroom, some other round one, 5 day old zoa (that will not open yet) and a cynarina coral that also has yet to open.

Hi everyone, new to the salt water hobby. Done fresh water for some time and have a masters in biochemistry, so over all I have a good understanding of what is happening in the tank. I was reading a lot and now will begin planning in all honesty. Looking forward to all the input.

Hello Reef Central, my name is Brenden. I am an engineering student at UW-Platteville I have a small tank that I can easily keep in a dorm without spacial issues. I am very new to the hobby my tank is roughly 2 or 3 months old I kind of just jumped right in by buying a preset up tank from my local fish store. It is an Aqueon cue 5 gal tank. I have a blue green chromis, a black and gold damsel, a frag of Duncan coral and a frag of trumpet coral. Clean up crew is 3 small astrea (?) Snails, 5 tiny hermit crabs, and a snail with a long trunk type thing that likes to bury underneath my sand and crushed coral. Looking for all the advice and help I can get as I am still very new to this and would like to upgrade to a much much larger tank one day.

Hello RC! Ive been into aquariums since I was a kid. When I lived in NC I worked at a specialty saltwater store where I maintained Brackish, Fresh, and Salt systems. Because I worked there I never owned a reef tank at home for the fear of buying all the rare corals and fish we imported :lol2: . I have been out of that job for a few years and in a different profession so I have been out of the fish relm since then. I have been on RC for several years but since I am just now getting back into it I re-registered. My wife and I have started up a what will be a mixed reef system. We are on day two of cycling the system with good progress on the start of the cycle. Specs are - 29 Tall (was a special sized tank thats no longer produced), Current Marine LED Lighting system, Rena Filstar XP1 canister, HOB Marineland Skimmer, 2 small heaters, 2 small hydor power heads, 25lbs of live rock, 20lbs of live sand. One of our live rocks was very much alive and had a colony of brown button polyps (15ish). About 4 have fully opened and the rest are emitting slime for protection from the stress. Will see if I can manage to keep them alive through the cycle.

Hi everyone,
I'm 3 weeks into cycling my first saltwater tank (have a year+ 5ga freshwater for my little boys).
It's a 90 gallon (36x24x24) reef tank with 30 gallon sump and refugium.
-60 lbs live rock
-miracle mud and light in refugium (light not on yet)
-Orbit Marine Dual Actinic LEDs
-ESHOPPS S200 Snow Cone Skimmer
-SICCE Syrna Silent 3.5 pump (660 GPH)
-Submersible heater in overflow but I forget brand. Has kept consistant temp.

Can I pepper you all with a couple questions right out of the gates?? :lolspin:

Could you give me some feedback on my equipment? Please be honest about the brands, sizes, quality and ability to do an effective job.

Also, I just did my first testing: (API saltwater master test kit)
Temp: 76-77 in tank thermometer
SG (via Redsea refractometer) 1.020 which I know is a little low
pH: 7.8-8
Nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Can that be correct after 3 weeks? I have a decent amount of algea but it's definitely going away.

Thanks everybody! Looking forward to meeting lots of you in this forum!

I also have a glass topper and a canopy. Just fyi. Not sure if that affects oxygen exchange, light penetration, heat capture etc...
