My secret sauce is Seachem Reef Prime and Seachem Stability.
Prime is an ammonia blocker and stability is bacteria in a bottle.

Hello all, my very first post
Glad to be here, and hope I do this post correctly. I've had freshwater tanks, and just recently decided to go reef. I'm still learning some of the acronyms that people use here and lingo so bear with me if I refer to something wrong!
I'm building a standard 55 gal tank with live rock, (58 lbs) and 40 lbs of live pink fiji sand. It's a tank that used to be fresh water. Day 1 of the tank was October 2 2009, and I'm journaling the levels as days go by on a spreadsheet.
Here's the specs:

Hand-me-down 55 w/stand
Current-USA Sundial 54x5 T5HO 2-10k daylight, 1-460nm Current Actinic, and 1-420nm Hamilton Actinic w/ 4 LED moonlights and separate timers for the day/act sides built in.
Aquaclear 30 power head running carbon
Marineland Penguin 350 backpack w/double blue carbons (total 4)
Remora Nano Skimmer given to me seasoned by a friend w/ Marineland Maxi 400 head
2-Hydor 55w heaters
2-Koralia 1's
2-Koralia 2's

Calcium 150 (definitely needs building)
pH 8.2
Nitrite 1
Nitrate 20
Hydro 1.024

That's all I'm able to test for at this time.

I have a few tester Kenya frags (just as a canary in the coal mine)
Also, I have 8 Hermies beginning to explore the tank.
I'm thinking of starting a build thread as well to track progress.

Wow you are addicted aren't you. It's all good though. You say you've learn't a lot likewise for myself but I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit. To me it sounds like you're quite knowledgeable yourself.

Hello all,
My name is Kevin and have dreamt of a saltwater setup since I was a kid. Now, nearly 40, it looks like it may actually happen. I studied Martin Moe's books in 2005 along with a couple of other authors that my LFS recommended. I'm re-reading them now, since a friend has offered me a 75g tank he's had to dismantle due to a military deployment. Song, if you read this, I would first like to thank you and your fellow soldiers for my freedom and liberty! Secondly, I'll take good care of your tank, you'll see in the pictures I'll send you!(Maybe they'll give you few moments of respite while your in the middle east!) THIRDLY he tuned me into this website, THANKS AGAIN!

I don't yet know what is available with the tank, aside from the stand, but I suppose I will start a build thread once I have the parts and prepare the house for the arrival. I need to hire an electrician to establish a proprietary tank circuit and some outlets.
Questions......oh yes the many many questions!!
1. I think first step should be to establish a QT in preparation for the DT.
After reading many posts on nano tanks here at RC, I may try to find a used ELOS 24/29? or a Solana 29g to use a QT?? Any thoughts on this? I figure if I'm going to maintain a QT tank I might as well use it as practice and as a piece of eye candy?
I'm growing more fond of the corals and anemones rather than a fish fanatic. A clown pair maybe, a royal gramma, sunset angle, a cleaner wrasse, some shrimp, snails, and a hermit. How I end up dividing them among the tanks is yet undecided. Although I think the clowns belong in the 75g.
2. Does anyone have issues with their cats and their tanks? I have 3 feline family members who I would hate to put on trial for reef murder
3. I'd like to make as little impact on my monthly electric bill as possible with the sum of both systems and their respective support gear. I've noticed that some other hobbyists have mentioned quality support equipment that do as good a job, or better, than some other but are more efficient while doing it. Is there a place/thread/or experienced hobbyiest that has listed preferred products along these lines??
4. I live in South Florida and can expect power outages with some regularity. What are my best options for short and long term outages, and how long could the tanks go without power and still have most of their inhabitants survive? (minutes/hours/days?)
5. The corner I'd like to put the QT tank in has windows on both sides, with wood blinds covering them. The right side of the tank may get a good bit of natural light from whatever filters through the blinds. Is that a worry? Would hanging a piece of black plexi to shield the exposed sides help or hurt?
6. Is there any good solid data available regarding the use of LED's for coral and reef inhabitant health?
7. Are clams more trouble than their worth?
I would like to have a significant amount of automation incorporated into the tanks to help in monitoring and controlling water quality parameters and nutrient levels.
I have a million more questions, but if you've gotten this far and haven't given up on my diatribe I can't wait to here this first round of responses.

I am actually in the process of putting together a 125 gal semi aggresive tank. Going fish only at this point, with some liverock, of course. I figured that if I was going to get my feet wet, I might as well get them wet with a tank my wife could swim in lol. I have an extremely knowledgeable (sp) friend who has been in the hobby for some time leading me along the right paths. I;ve been doing some reading here, and have already started my 30 gal sump up with some bateria loaded sponge, and a few (3) damsels, and some CUC, just to get everything heading in the right direction.

i have a dutch overflow system with no directions and im having the hardest time trying to get the skimmer working properly.I cant find instructions anywhere.I just set my tank up yesterday,everytime i try adding air it overflows,it doesnt create bubbles,can anyone help please,my name is Paul

Just getting back into the hobby after a few years off-a recent move made me take down my 200g reef,which was a compilation of 10yrs. of reefkeeping.I have been lurking for a while,seeing what is new out there..gonna start a 30d 30w 26t cube in the next few months

depends wether your media is cured or uncured, and theres no need to have the lights on for 10 hours a day whilst cycling media, a couple of hours is enough at this stage imo

hi i am planning on starting a 28 gallon cube and i am already addicted i cant stop reading about it i knew that it was something that required attention and patience but i had no idea i think i am going to enjoy this more then i thought i already have a list of things i am going to need to buy and how much it all cost i have even added in how much more my electric bill is going to be each month...i am looking forward to getting everything together and starting my cycle in about a month
