If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I am an official newbie, both to the forums, and to the hobby. You guys have what seems like an endless supply of knowledge on these forums, which I will be reading until my eyes actually fall out. Just wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself.

What are your reef keeping plans Jayson?

Hello all, I joined this forum with 20 years FW experience but I have no SW experience. I happen to be the new proud owner of a perfectly good 92g corner bowfront SW full setup (including RO/DI, lights, stand, sump, refugium, protein skimmer, more) I snagged from someone on Craigslist for $200 (yes, 2 with 2 zeros, not 3) that wanted to get out of the hobby. I am a member of a couple other FW/SW forums but this one looked like it was more SW specific and I want to learn as much as possible about corals, frags, online purchasing of stock, CUC, etc. I read "the complete idiot's guide to the saltwater aquarium" so I am now no longer a complete idiot on the subject. It's actually a very good book and got me going in the right direction. In fact, the guy I bought the tank from has a 125 in his office that I found about half a dozen things wrong with after reading that book and looking at his tank.

My background, I'm an Electrical Engineer by education and a salesperson by experience, so I can figure just about anything out and then sell it to you. How's that for ya. I'm also pretty funny but looks aren't everything.

Like I said I started FW in high school 20 years ago, mainly Cichlids until my tank crashed on me back in 2000/2001 and I never set it up again. A lot changed in 8 years, set up my 55g FW community heavily planted on 1/1/9 and converted to canister from UGF after learning a ton online, now I have the opportunity to go SW as soon as I get a better job so I can pay for it.

I also have a 10g with many, many fry from the livebearers that I keep. I have given away almost 400 fry in the last 6 months and have probably 100 more in there, which I will hopefully be transferring to a 37g I bought for $20 and am in the process of re-sealing.

I also have a 55g setup & stand with a cracked bottom I got from a college buddy for free. That's a project I'm going to put off for a while, but it will probably end up being a frag tank or QT for SW in the future and I'll just stuff it in the basement.

As you can tell, I suffer from what some call Multiple Tank Syndrome. I can't stop. I also want a Discus tank sometime soon. I had a really weird Discus dream the other day after I fell asleep while reading a book on Discus. It had purple and yellow alligators in it also. I don't know why I'm telling you this.

Anyways, nice site from what I've seen so far. Lots of good info to look through. Later!

(PS in case you're on Fantasyreef.com, I just posted this same intro post on there. No I'm not a spammer or bot, my head done got a brain in it)

New to Salt : Hello

New to Salt : Hello

Hello fellow Reefers!
Wanted to introduce myself to the forum, I just started into the saltwater world, but have been maintaining some sort of freshwater tank since I was 5. So, 28 years of the aquatic life. But, I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions.

The beginnings of a reef addict...

The beginnings of a reef addict...

Greetings All!!!

After working with a 55gal planted freshwater tank over the past 10 years, I have the oppurtunity to delve into the saltwater realm with an AGA 90g that I was given a few years back (glass/seals are very clean); though I still need to do a leak check on it.

The 55g is being torn down since the substrate is shot and a severe algae breakout which I couldn't control led to some plant loss. The 55g will be given to my brother-in-law, heck he gave me the 55g and 90g tanks in the first place.;)

The wife and I have been waiting for a time to try saltwater and the time has come. Here's what I have right now:
- 90g AGA glass tank (built in Dec. '96, need to verify is side is drillable)
- Aqueon Oak Mission stand and canopy
- Solar T5HO 4x54w (ordered with 6700k bulbs when I thought about staying FW planted); will need to change bulbs out and sell these. I know I may need more lighting depending on what corals I want but I figured that this will work as get through the initial learning curve of reefkeeping.

Unfortunately, that's where it's going to stand for awhile since; we'll be changing out the carpet to hardwood floors in the room where the tank will be (hence, the nice timing for an tank upgrade:D).

Wife is stoked about going "reef" and has even "donated" her bonus for the effort; bless her heart!

So here's the punchlist while/after the floor is done:
-research/discuss/bribe for information from good folks like you and the LFS
-next purchase 6 stage RO/DI and 2 big Rubbermaid containers
-figure out a 30g sump, maybe diy
-drill tank side if possible and figure out overflow
-finalize skimmer (in sump)
-live rock/sand
-coral, then fish

So, be patient with me as I'm sure I'll be posting tons of questions!!!

Thanks,
Glenn

Hi! I'm Amy. I currently help take care of the 30 gal tank at work with 2 other people. 1 of them is probably an expert reefer...he's advanced for sure & owns his own tank at home. Anyway, I do want my own tank at some point but this is a good way to learn & get some experience before I venture off on my own. Our tank is thriving & I'm excited to come in everyday & see what new critter has popped up or out. We have a TON of feather dusters, a clown fish, a blue hippo tang, a red tiger striped angelfish, 2 urchins, 2 anemones & a bunch of corals along w/some crazy looking snails & other cleaners

Today I set my first trap. We have a lobster that is eating everything (2 tangs, 4 fire crabs, 1 jawfish & 1 goby) it can get it's claws on. So we've voted him out (I'm open to tips on trapping!). I'm dying to get a yellow watchman & buddy for the tank but can't until he's gone. We're also looking at a clam, scallop & I obsessing about blue mushroom coral.

Anywho, Hi to everyone!! =)

Hi, I am Sam and I'm from New Zealand.

Currently keeping 5 freshwater tanks with Fighters, Rams, BNs, Ottos and Platies. I love my planted tanks but recently got a 2ft cube for $75 :D and making it into a reef tank might be an option.

Looking foward to discussing this as I am extremely new to the marine world but have plenty of experience with FW setups.

Thanks!

why are you saying help?

is it because you know you have made a mistake adding stock too quickly?

assuming the sand and rock is live, you may get away with it, can we have a little more info, what test kits have you got?are you actually testing ?

sorry about the questions theres probably 10 more i could ask tbh, anyhow never mind lets try to establish what you have done to date and what equipment you have

Back into aquaria

Back into aquaria

Hello my name is Bradley and I am addicted....again.

First, my thanks to everyone at RC for making the web site and online e-zine possible and to all the great people in the hobby that post very helpful information. KUDOS!

I've been lurking and reading up and figured I should post my BC14 & 90g.
When I first started the tank, I put boat load of crushed coral in. After doing some reading and re-acquainting myself with the hobby, I decided to start over and cover/replace the crushed coral with sand from a friends 135g setup he had taken down.

Any input and comments are appreciated.

Back in 1987, I started a custom aquarium & maint. business after being sucked into the hobby by a LFS employee/friend. My wife and I lived in a very small duplex in Sacramento with 8 aquariums (fresh, marine, reef, discus). A walk-in closet lined with shelves and dozens of sweater boxes with various captive bread snakes, geckos, frogs and chameleons.

I can remember spending countless hours feeding and maintaining the inhabitants of my collection along with customer's stuff.

My favorite project and one of my first was for a wealthy musician. He wanted two in wall setups (1 SW and 1 FW) and I pulled it off without a hitch. I was so nervous and I wanted to make sure nothing died.

It was fun to visit schools with my sweater boxes of Ooohs and aaaahhs. Some children had never seen a live snake, gecko or chameleon, let alone see it up close and personal and get to hold and touch some of them.

As the years passed by, the business slowed way down and I had to find a steady source of income. When I entered the so called "9-5" grind, I slowly found myself losing interest. So before any neglect set in, I sold off or gave away all of my stuff.

Now after several years and 2 kids, I am back into the hobby and jumped in up to my neck. Technology has changed so much, but the basic principles have remained the same. I have so much to learn.

Here are a couple pics of my tanks.

Stock lighting - BC protein skimmer/air pump in chamber 1 - stock chamber 2 (bio=balls) & 3 w/ exception of 100 micron fabric wrap around sponge in chamber 3 that was removed once water was polished.

90G (my impatience led to some extra work and 3 loses)

AG 90G tank - Coralife Aqulight Pro lighting - 40g sump - UV - crappy skimmer(needs replacing) pic was taken before the sand was put in.

The 90G was rushed and I paid the price. I have since purchased a case of this to assist...
