If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi - I am brand new to salt water. I have some experience in tropicals, I have a small apartment and stay all week there, coming home on weekends, so I have lots of time to devote to something detailed like aquariums. I decided to try out tropicals again, so I put in ad on a local radio station. I got a response from a person, who had a saltwater tank to sell, I figured that I would convert it to a tropical tank. I found out, close to the end of the sale that fish & live rock came with it. I decided to make the attempt to keep the fish and so... here I am to gain some knowledge and maybe keep a healthy tank. Besides, it looks like a great place to make friendships and learn something new.

I'm new to RC (a few weeks ago) and just saw this sticky. I setup my first reef tank just over two years ago. I've had roughly a half a dozen different tanks in the last two years and I made two cross state moves in that time with the tanks. My local clubs have helped me learn a lot and I'm not sure how I missed RC all this time. It's great to see so many reefers with so much knowledge. I have only a 180 gallon at the moment because my wife limited me to one tank in the apartment.

180 is nothing to be ashamed of, IMO that is about the right size. I am about to do my first cross country move with my tank and it's going to be an interesting journey.

Hi my name is Jennifer. I joined in Dec and have already posted a few things on here, but thouught I should come and introduce myself :) I currently have a 65 gallon, PC lights 2x96w. Seems like I need to upgrade my filtering system already though, lol. I run a canister filter at the moment, but will be soon switching over to a sump/refugium after reading some of the threads here, it seems like the ideal setup for most. Already driving my hubby crazy with all of my "new ideas", lol. Anyways, just wanted to say that I think this is a great site! I'm new to reef keeping and there are alot of very interesting and very informative threads goin on here. I've learned alot in just a short couple of months.

Wise choice about going with a sump/fuge. You definitely won't regret it.

I really enjoy starting a new tank. Especially when you're drilling and plumbing it all from scratch.

Want to say Hi to everybody out there on this great site. After years of freshwater I have moved into saltwater. I have a 90 gal tank with a lemon drop angel, two clowns and a six line wrasse. The tank has been going for about 7 months now. I have probably 60 pounds of LR in there along with some soft corals. Can't forget my cleaner crew of crabs, snails and shrimps. Some huge mushrooms, some zoas and two leathers. I just added a RemoraPro C skimmer. I have joined our local reef club, GIRS and am getting more addicted daily!

If you can do well with the 10 gallon then it only gets easier with the bigger tanks. Check this out it'll answer a lot of questions.

Hi all,
I'm new to the saltwater tank...I have a 50 gal tank and put in the blowers (2), heater and sugar sand and live sand the other day. Then, I arranged about 30 lbs of live rock on the bottom and added a premixed saltwater solution provided by the experts at a local fish dealership. I added the water and boom! Instant cloudy water! It's been a day now and the sand is starting to settle but I have this foam at the top. What is it? I don't have a skimmer or lights yet but was told I'd be okay for a couple weeks. Can I just scrape this foam out? Help!

Yeah the film is just a bi product of your sand. A skimmer will help get rid of it but since you won't have one for a while you can manually remove it.

Hello Everyone, the SW experience is all new to me. I have had FW for years and now that I have a steady job I wanted to get into SW. I just started my tank on 10Jan10. I have a 55 gallon, two Maxi jets with wave maker, Remora C Protien skimmer, HOB filter, after cycle two 54 Watt t5's, 80 lbs of LR so far (fiji) and heater. I have not added substrate yet because Im really not sure yet which direction Im going to go. This site has already helped me alot so I figured it was time to join the community.
