It's good to have someone in the family to ask for reef advice.

Brand new to the hobby. 5 months ago a guy I work with was going to throw away a 29 gal tank that had been in his basement for 12 years. I wasn't interested in an aquarium but it seemed a shame to throw something like that away, so I adopted it.

I went to the LFS and looked at the plastic treasure chests, bubbling skeletons, plastic plants etc. and I thought, that's nice but it's nothing I want to spend my time with. Then I wandered in to the saltwater section. HOLY COW! These are awesome. I couldn't pull myself away. I immediately got online and found Reef Central. Now I'm obsessed with it. I'm trying to soak up as much info as I can. This forum has been extremely valuable in helping a rookie get started.

10 days ago I setup the tank. Last night I put in my live rock. (25% live and 75% lace) Waiting for it to cycle is going to seem like an eternity. Thank you to all on RC for the teaching that you do on this forum. It's greatly appreciated.

It's awesome to read that a newbee is doing everything right and being patient. Keep up the good work!!

Capn i got a 55 w 20 sump cycle complete a good month plus now all levels are great just wondering what else to test for

ammonia, nitrite and nitrate again to confirm cycle is complete, if so then start to seriously concentrate on salinity, temperature and ph, once you have gained experience with testing and keeping these 6 under control your on your way, and you can start to concentrate on the big three.

Hi I am new to this project

Hi I am new to this project

I decided last year that I would like to have a salt water tank. So I started browsing about and found a tank I love (not quite as perfect as some would prefer). I read a couple of books, figured if I could get through organic chemistry, surely I can do this! Then I started looking at what to put in my tank and fell in love with coral! I want fish, don't get me wrong, but I am really in it for the coral. Which means LIGHTING!!! And that is why I am here today.

What size of tank do you have and what are the demensions. Are you interested in sps corals, lps and softies or a combination of both.
These are all questions that need to be asked when considering the proper kind and amount of light

I'm new in the fact that I barely ever post on here, but have been visiting the site for several years. I used to have am AGA 120 sps dominated zeovit tank, but I had to tear that down after a year. Currently I am setting up a 40 breeder that will be sps dominated. I will be doing the zeovit method with this tank as well.

Hi fellow reefers!

I've been active on some other "reef boards" for many years (mainly more local to me) but been a bit of a lurker here on RC. Recently I've had more interest in propagation and LED's. Both topics better discussed here it seems.

I'm a long time hobbyist, with 20+ years in just about every type aquarium from the basic freshwater, to reefs, to local species (various biotopes of both east and west coast areas when I lived there) and even cold water tanks.

I've heard complaints about RC various places, but I have to say thus far I've found everyone very helpful, welcoming & friendly. I think that says a lot when you consider the size of this board, which I'm sure brings it's own unique problems for admins and mods.

Here is a crappy quick shot of my current 125 setup...it's a long story but this tank was setup to purposely include no SPS, so everything is soft or LPS corals. I did have 5 tanks setup in my house not long ago, but I'm down to just this one preparing for a new large scale build.

newbie to saltwater

I have a 55 gallon and assorted smaller topical tanks. I got a 46 g bow front tank for christmas and made it a saltwater. I used live crushed coral with about 10lbs of live rock to start. I have 2 blue damsels and two clown fish so far. I am using a wet/dry sump with protien skimmer. I have had it set up for about three weeks and the ammonia, NO2, NO3 are still @ 0. The pH has also stayed @8.3. The only problem I am having(which may be normal) is the crushed coral is getting a small amount of greenish brown algae. I didn't know if I should put some snails or some kind of coral in to help.

It feels good to get back into the hobby. good luck with your 40..

It's hard to tell if your tank has cycled, A lot of times, when you add live rock to a new tank it forgoes the cycle (or it's so quick that you missed it). the only concern that I have that it hasn't cycled is because there aren't any nitrates (which really doesn't mean much except if there was nitrates then I would be safe to say the tank has cycled). Keep testing and maybe take a sample of water to the lfs and see if they come up with different results.

As far as the crushed coral I would recommend getting that out of the tank and use sand (you'll thank me 6 months from now). Good luck with your tank.

Hello from Arizona. I've been keeping some sort of fish for the last 20 years. Currently i have a 110 gal reef, a 55 with a Picasso trigger and a 3000 gallon pond. I actually joined because i saw a thread of a guy doing a neo 90 which i hope to be my next tank (when i can talk my wife in to it of coarse). So good to be here and look forward to meeting some fellow reef junkies.

Just curious, why is sand better then coral? Everyone I talked to locally said they used coral including the LFS (which may be where everyone else got there information). I was just wondering the pro's and con's of each, I am very willing to learn and do this right.

Hello

Hello

Hello,
I am new to RC and soon to be new to the wonderful world of saltwater.
I've had both a 29 and a 55 gallon freshwater tank for years now and have always wanted to get into saltwater and with the help of those in these forums I hope to have my first setup soon.
Thanks in advance for all of your useful knowledge!
Kevin

It has a lot to do with trapping detritus.
There are plenty of threads on the subject for and against you can make your own decision:
This one
and this one favors CC
and this one
and this one
and the list goes on, if you want to research it more you can do a search "crushed coral" and it's come up with pages of thread.
