If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello all. I am new to this whole addiction to aquaria... and as of yet do not have my own tank. I've been spending hours for the past two weeks now researching on reef tanks, sumps, protein skimmers, powerheads, water, live rock, etc etc. I've been to 6 local saltwater stores to "peruse" and speak with the knowledgeable folk there. It is amazing how customer service differs from store to store, but I have found Reef Central online... and well... here I am. Great community here from what I can see. Anyhow, all insight from the experienced aquarist to this novice looking to start his first reef system is welcome.

Trouble in River City

Hello. I am new to the forum and new to reef aquarium keeping.
I inherited a 40 gal reef tank that has 2 clown fish, 1 pseudo chroma, 2 frogspawn coral, 2 torchlight anemones, 1 feather duster, a giant crop of xenia, 4 hermit crabs and a whole host of snails.

Summer is here in ATL and I can't seem to get the temperature in my aquarium down.
The temperature now is around 82-84. A snail died and possibly a hermit crab. the rest seem ok. But I was told not to go above 80 for temp.
Does anyone have any suggestions besides a really expensive reef chiller?
Thanks!

Hi my name is Teresa and I have been an addict for a year. I have considered setting up a saltwater tank for 20 years but just didn't have the time or money. Last year one of my sons friends started working for a pet store and I looked at his tank and next thing I kno - I am buying a tank. I started with a 150 gallon (jump in with both feet) and it has been an up and down experience. Wish I had known about RC before I bought the tank - maybe some of the downs wouldn't have been as low. Things are finally stable. Considering updating lighting to MH or LEDs from T5s but I have finally learned to research, research and research some more before I do anything lol. I love LPS and like lots of color. My tank is 26 in deep so I don't get enough light on the bottom of the tank - the tank looks top heavy - so I need to supplement or buy another fixture. I also have a 75 gallon fish only tank.:wavehand:

I wish that I found RC earlier as well. but good to finally have you with us. Be sure to start a thread full of pictures of your tank.

there are some other options for cooling a tank. 78-82 is about where you want to keep the temp. You can increase surface turbulence by aiming power heads towards the top of the tank, to aid in evaporation which will naturally cool the tank (the down side is having to top off more on a daily basis)
Change your lighting periods to later in the evening when it's cooler (some people that are at work all day start their lighting period right before they get home, that way they aren't wasting the viewing time when they are at work)

Hello Everyone,

I have already posted a couple times but I figured that I would introduce myself. My name is Ben and I live in Phoenix, AZ. I recently decided to start my first saltwater tank and finally got it up and running about a week ago. I have a 40 gallon setup, with 40 pounds of marco dry rock, and 40 pounds of sand. I seeded everything with a pound of live rock (I know, i'm cheap). I can't wait for the cycle to be complete so I can start adding fish and coral. I look forward to sharing what I learn and learning from others as there seems to be a vast amount of reef keeping knowledge here.

Hello Reefers

Hello Reefers

I am new to the addiction. I started about 5 months ago with a biocube and have recently got hooked onto a 90 with a 30 sump/fuge. That is still in the process of being set up. Just got some base rock in there from a local reefer. I joined the local reef club, JARC and everyone has been very helpful. My 2 1/2 year old daughter now knows the names of more fish than my husband does. I am loving it. I am addicted. Hopefully next step will be a frag tank.

That's great when you can get the whole family involved with the hobby.

I've been lurking for several months and finally decided to step forward. My name is Tim, and I've had freshwater aquariums off and on for the last 4 decades. Our son has had a 90 gallon reef for the last 10 years, and after watching his success, I'm finally prepared to make the leap to saltwater. If the remodelling of our house proceeds as planned, there should be a few hundred square feet of basement ready for the reef project by the end of the year. Our son has also gifted me with his leftovers, a 90 gallon tank with base and T5 lighting (currently dry). Also found a deal on a large wet/dry filter that's hopefully going to be a 20 gallon sump, along with a large-ish skimmer (I forget the make and model) So for now it's work on the remodelling, accumulate parts, research, and make plans for the system.

Professionally, I am an engineer for one of the country's largest nanotechnology research centers. My responsibilities include leading the design team for the ultrapure water system, as well as the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the system. The system produces 15,000 gallons per day of water that's purer than what is used to make computer chips. One component of the system is 19,000 gallon per day two-pass reverse osmosis system.

I may be able to help out with questions about water softening, RO, deionization, UV, ozone, water chemistry, etc, etc....

Hi, I'm Mark. I put 50 pounds of live rock in a 40 gallon aquarium today - so my adventure begins. I have a 40 gallon long (48" x 12" x 16). I've got no sump or refugium - running a Fluval 305 and a Remora Pro skimmer. 200 watt heater and a couple of powerheads ( Koralia 1 and a penguin 550) round it out.

My biggest wonder is lights. I bought 2 - 24" AquaticLife T-5 HO's at a liquidation sale. They both have one daylight bulb, and one actinic (all four are 24 watt). I also have two 18" inch Actinics in florescent fittings (T8?) that are 15 watts each. Will this be enough for hard corals and a clam - or am I underlit?

Thanks - looking forward to lots of advice, some of it good!
