If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi, I'm Mark. I put 50 pounds of live rock in a 40 gallon aquarium today - so my adventure begins. I have a 40 gallon long (48" x 12" x 16). I've got no sump or refugium - running a Fluval 305 and a Remora Pro skimmer. 200 watt heater and a couple of powerheads ( Koralia 1 and a penguin 550) round it out.

My biggest wonder is lights. I bought 2 - 24" AquaticLife T-5 HO's at a liquidation sale. They both have one daylight bulb, and one actinic (all four are 24 watt). I also have two 18" inch Actinics in florescent fittings (T8?) that are 15 watts each. Will this be enough for hard corals and a clam - or am I underlit?

Thanks - looking forward to lots of advice, some of it good!

Sounds like your over lit, but some questions arise, what do you have driving the bulbs? how old are the bulbs? and what are the brand of the bulbs?

I have enjoyed reading much of the info on Reef Central. Thank you to all who have obviously worked so very hard to put it together as a wonderful source of info and forum for all!!

I also have read a few books about setting up a saltwater aquarium for the first time. :reading: After all this research and planning over the course of about 6 months I finally bought some equipment. Now I have even more questions that are not clearly answered in any of the books. (This forum has already answered quite a few of my questions in the Newbie articles written by Waterkeeper. Thank you Waterkeeper!) I am also already regretting some of my past decisions and purchases and not sure how to proceed.

Right now I am putting together a FOWLR tank, but keeping in mind that I do intend for it to be a reef tank in the future.

I plan on posting a thread to track and share my progress with the forum.

As I learn I also hope to share with newbies my lessons learned from experience.

Hi, I'm Doug and I'm starting a build of a 240 gallon in-wall tank. I've previously had a 100 gallon tank and have been lurking here for a while. I'm anxious to get going.

Waterkeeper is the New To The Hobby resident guru however he has been on hiatus for a while. But his work still helps. It seems that you have your ducks in a row and ready to get things going. good luck and can't wait to see your progress in your other thread.

Hello, My name is Chris and I'm from Tampa FL. I got started in this hobby seven months ago just to try it out. My 10 gallon FW tank quickly turned into a 92 gallon SW tank I picked up on Craigslist for a song. I soon founf myself amazed at what others have done with their reefs and the hobby in general. I've seen amazing tank of the month coral setups, spectacular fake rock walls built from scratch, learned about algae turf scrubbers for 0 nitrate control. Yes, I'm a big fan of this whole DIY hobby. I currently have a 92 gallon Oceanic corner tank with a Santa Monica Algae Turf Scrubber (ATS) and a dozen fish. I've learned how to maintain really good water quality in a FOWLR tank. Working on a custom Canopy now for MH lighting. When finished with that, I'll put some effort into the corals game. Glad to me in with such a great group!

Hello,

My name is John and I am from England. I now live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and I am a soccer coach.

I have kept freshwater fish for many years, and recently spent a lot of time with iwagumi style tanks. If you have not seen them before, you really should check them out. They are very zen.

Now, I have turned to the dark side and I am setting up my first saltwater tank. I have made life hard for myself by going for a nano reef.

12g JBJ Nanocube DX
13lb of Tonga live rock
Just over an inch of aragonite sand

I started the cycle about a day ago, and now I am waiting and reading. So, so, so much reading. I have read quite a few threads on here, and it looks like a great forum!

Seems like you're off to a good start. Be sure to start a thread documenting your progress.

Where should I start the thread documenting the build? Is there a special section for this (I looked and didn't see one), or should I just post it in the new to the hobby section?

Hello! I just learned of this site from the guy I bought my 20g sump from...

I have been doing freshwater tanks for several years now...fixing to take down my 55g fw and start up a 65g fowlr, eventually reef tank. I also have a 10g fowlr w/2 damsels and 4 hermit crabs for now, and a 5g hex tetra tank in my bedroom.

I am a stay at home mom of 2 that are both under 4. :)

Yah I have been bitten by that salty sea bug also!!

Since you're a stay at home mom you'll have plenty of time to take care of your new found hobby. ;) Just don't tell my wife I said that..(she's a stay at home mom as well) I'd be put out on the porch and never be able to come back in if she read this........
Good luck with the salt water side of the hobby.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this forum for a couple of years, and I've been 'meaning' to start a reef tank for just as long. I have a doctorate in (temperate) marine ecology and a little commercial freshwater aquaculture experience. I am constantly amazed at the wealth of information available on these forums and the dedication that people have for the hobby (more of a lifestyle I guess).

I used to have some cichlids in a tank in my office, but then the ethics committee decided that vertebrates were no go, even though I have approval to collect and dissect marine fish. I brought the cichlids home and replaced them with freshwater crayfish but now decapod crustaceans have been put on the approval list, meaning that I can't keep them for my own 'pleasure' (their words not mine).

Is it possible to keep a reef without these critters ? (shrimp, hermits, crabs are no go). If so pls point me towards any threads that will help me out.

Definitely, shrimp, hermits, crabs are pretty much scavengers and not necessary, utilize snails as your clean up crew and you’ll be fine.

Hi I just wanted to know if anyone can help me with my coralife 65 skimmer. I have way too many micro bubbles in my tank and it is driving me nuts! i am using it as a hob.

Hi, new at this but loving it. I have a 55gal long tank. everything is set up and running beautifully but i was ready to start looking into an anemone or a few corals but my pH has read 7.8 steady. How would i get this up? I really didn't want to add a bunch of chemicals if i can help it, but willing to.
