If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi RC! My name is Geoff and I have recently began my first marine aquarium (12.5g AquaEuroUSA) with the assistance of my LFS and the RC forums. So far I have been absolutely amazed with the abundance of info and spectacular tank pics posted by members (i.e. Treg's 240g??? Incredible!!). Thanks in advance for any advice/assistance, as I will surely need it!

Hello Everyone! My girlfriend introduced me to the wonderful world of aquariums and all they can contain. Very interested in learning about all aspects of owning and maintaining a tank. Seems to be a wonderful forum..time to get to reading.

Hello. My name is Matt. I am addicted to glass boxes filled with water.

Kept FW tanks for years but saltwater always seemed like more of a dream than a reality. Along with this site and others i quickly learned that keeping SW didnt necessarily mean throwing $500+ in the water at set up. So i embarked on my nano journey. Converted a Fluval Edge to SW to give it a try. Assuming all goes well i hope to convert my 46g or 55g to SW down the line.

Great site!

Hey all just wanted to say HI! I am just joining this site to learn as much as possible. I am in the planning stages of everything trying to figure out exactly what i want. I have not ever had an aquarium, but i look forward to learning as much as possible so i can have my very fist one.

Hello all, I'm new to RC, as well as the hobby. I have some good guidance and have recently started setting up a 30L reef tank. I have a question about lighting for SPS...I know they require more lighting. What is the general wattage per gallon rule of thumb for clams or SPS? I know MH is likely the preferred lighting. My tank is 36x18x12, and is currently running approx. 6.5 watts per gallon. What can I support with this? Any advice and input is greatly appreciated.

I look forward to contributing to the RC community and getting to know you.

As for the watts per gallon rule of thumb. I'd toss it out the window. You're right about MH being the preferred however they create a lot of heat and use a lot of electricity. There are a few other alternatives to MH like T5's which offer great temp control and plenty of color variations. VHO bulbs are a good for SPS as also (as far as color) their super actinics are hard to match as for the last 2 you're limited to certain brands because of the 36" tank, and the new craze these days are the LED's.

For the size of your tank Any of those choices would be fine for SPS and/or clams.

Reading is a great way to start. When you're ready to start your tank be sure to take lots of pictures and document your progress here on RC.

If you're as addicted to glass boxes as you say you are, you're going to have a full blown 200+ gallon reef tank within a years time..... ;)

55 is going to be a jumping off point... trust me. Quit now!! while you still have a chance. :D

If you research and ask all the right questions, you won't end up spending money on things you don't need and equipment that is worthless. Word of advice: buy the right equipment the first time that way you're not upgrading down the road. Trust me... it'll save you in the long run.

@Sisterlimonpot: Thanks!

Thanks so much for the response...it is encouraging to know that I can get good growth with a variety of options...thanks again!

Looks like you have a plan to jump in with both feet, good luck, make sure you check out the coral forums to get a good understanding of all that is coral. Sometimes they can be a bit tricky.

New here. Just swapped my 20 gallon for a 55. new to the reef and saltwater period. High confidence that i'll master this very soon. As i am very experienced in keeping difficult creatures and learning everything about them for care and housing. Have to buy two more lights, dont ask me what they are called I have no clue as i am not home right now. But i had two on my 20 gallon which was more than enough. running a simple carbon filter as of now. Just recently found out about this wonderful thing called a canister filter. Going to pick one of those up soon. Was gonna do a sump, but i had to much trouble with it. because im not drilling my nice brand new tank, or doing that overflow box thing. anyways. new to the forum. highly recommened from lots of saltwater enthuist. hope to learn 80 percent here and 20 percent in the field.

It's going to take a lot longer than you think to master this hobby. It's nothing like fresh water tanks. I've been doing it for 18+ years and still scratching the surface.

Good luck with your new 55.

Howdy gang! What a wealth of information here at RC. I kept freshwater fish when I was a kid and progressed onto saltwater and then had several reef tanks. I have been out of the hobby for a few years and am just now setting up a nano reef with my kids. We are starting with a nano due to an upcoming move next summer. In the meantime, I'm in the planning stages for a 120g for after the move. This site has given me so many great ideas for my future tank. Thanks to all who contribute!

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,
My name is Jaden. I live in Las Vegas.
I've been reading builds and different discussions on here for a while and I finally filled up my 20 gallon, soon to be reef, in my room. Also help my dad with his biocube reef tank.
I hope to be doing a bigger tank that will allow us to have some diversity in the tank.

Hi all,

I am Suraj, from India. Have been into planted tanks for the last decade and now stepping into the reef zone. Looking forward to a lot of help from reefers here.
