Good evening Reef Central, Im glad to have found such a vast site of information for things to come. Im really excited for what this new hobby will bring. Hobby seems to cut it somewhat short. I dont think I have ever stood and stared for hours at a "hobby" before hehe. That being said, I just started about a month and a half ago ... thus starts the story.

My wife and I went to Florida (Cape San Blas) for our ten year anniversary back in August. While there, we happened upon a "hermit crab" that at the time we thought would be really cool to take back home to our kids. We really where kind of naive, because the hermit crab that we thought was a land crab (we live in Iowa, who woulda thunk a hermit crab was a salt water animal, hehe), actually needed salt water. So on our drive back home we stopped into a pet store in Tennessee to pick up a 10 gallon tank. Decided to dump in the sand we brought back from the beach, a few shells, added some salt water to a feed dish and stuck Bob in it. He proceeded to suck up about three or four refills. So we got back home, filled up the 10 gallon with saltwater, let it cycle, added some live rock and a red footed conch, added a clown fish and some more live rock and here we are.

I was hooked a few weeks ago and now my wife is talking about wanting a larger tank. I threw out a 90 gallon idea for our living room and she likes it. WOOHOO!!! hehe

The 10 gallon is doing really well, PH-8.4, NO2:0-.25ppm, NO3:20ppm(coming down from 40 just a few days ago), Ammonia:0-.25ppm.

We have all kinds of stuff growing. Ill get some pics for some identification help because some of the things I cant find any google images for.

Thanks

Chad

with your persistence maybe in 10 years there will be a lot more people interested in the hobby. Keep it going.

Hello,

I'm Martin and I'm pretty new to this stuff. I actually ordered my stuff last week so I'm waiting to receive everything to get started.

I have a 43g cube + a 22g, I will use maxspect 160w LED lighting system. I'm not sure if I want to have a SPS only or both LPS and SPS yet.

I hope to learn and share a lot through this forum!

Cheers!

*Greetings* to all! Of course I am new to RC~would I be on this thread if not? :)
Only been reefin for a lil over a year, and a true addiction it has become!
Our whole family is involved, my 14 year old daughter now wants to become a marine biologist, she will be adventuring to Marine Labs in Key Largo next summer :)
We currently have a 55 G Sea Max, mixed reef that is overstocked :)
Our goal is to have a 150+ up and running by Christmas~Merry Christmas to us :)
BTW, my biggest joy right now is my female Mandarin Goby, "Dainty Girl", is now eating flake food!!!!
So happy to be here... :)

Aloha RC...

Aloha RC...

Greetings everyone....
I'm still in my planning stage for my first reef set up...As I was pondering
various subjects such as purchasing live rock and RO/DI systems, it suddenly dawned on me.."Dude, I live in Hawaii".....please forgive me for this possibly dumb question(I am new to this), but is it feasable for me to just take live rock/sand from the various beaches in jogging distance and/or seawater to use in my tank?...if not...why not??....please be gentle.........great site BYW:)

hi all,

been reading here for many years, very little little, cuz of time issues and waiting to build my 10ft tank, practicing on 200litre tank for the last two years.

actually i wanted my first thread to be a build thread of my intended 10x4x4 tank, but,,, have found myself in trouble and ended up posting today

anyway

i welcome all new members above me, and those to come below me, and myself hehehe

Don't worry about deciding right now, you have at least 4-6 months waiting for your tank to stabilize to decide what direction you want to go. Be sure to start a thread when you get things going.

It's definitely a good feeling to see the mandarins start eating the frozen stuff. It's definitely a plus when you have the whole family involved in the hobby.

This question comes up a lot. I would leave the rock and sand alone, it is illegal to take any of that from the shores or oceans. Here is a website from the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources.

Most of the rock and sand we get are either harvested legally from the ocean, DIY'd, or come from salt mines, so that the demand for our hobby doesn't destroy the precious reefs throughout the world.

It's nice to see you coming out of the shadows. Be sure to post your build thread when you get things situated.

Hi, I'm MGOBLUE.

I have been lurking on this and a couple of other reef sites over the last few weeks. I had a SW tank years ago, but was using very outdated information. I quit when I made a move to a new house 10 years ago. I am in the process of starting a 75g and looking to do it better this time using the most updated information I can get.

So far, RC and MR (Michigan Reefers) are the two sites I am spending the most time on. It's been fun and informative to read while I slowly make progress on my tank build (building a stand now).

Thanks for all the info!!
