I am new here and just wanted to take a minute to say hello. I am new to saltwater, but have been keeping freshwater for several years now, including a back yard Koi pond. I felt it was about time to step up to the next level with a small 29 gallon FOWLR aquarium, since I already had the tank sitting here empty. Everything has been going real good with it, the few fish that I have are doing good. I even built my own Chiller from an old small fridge that I had (it works nice). I just finished building a Refugium from a 10 gallon tank I had sitting around.

Hi, my name is Diem. I have my 20 gallon reef tank with 1 clownfish and 1 hermit crab. My friend got me into the hobby. I enjoy watching my fish swim around, but he seems restless without an anemone. I will get some lighting soon, so he can have a friend. I am currently using a canister filter, but I plan on getting a small protein skimmer and a refugium. I am looking for examples and recommendations to better improve my reef keeping experience.

Hi, Brand new to Marine, had fresh for years. I'm still reading all the sticky's and joined my local club (SWFMAS) and haven't found a tank yet. I know the right one will show up when I'm ready, for now...I'm studying all the technical stuff and learning about the critters along the way!

Right now while i wait to find a great used tank and stand, I'm looking for a good RO system to start with. Any suggestions?

Hi guys, hows it goin?

Pretty new to the reef hobby even though I have kept larger saltwater fish only tanks for some time now. I re-used one of my 36 gallon bowfronts to start a reef tank. It is not drilled for an overflow box (wish I had that kind of tank) but I tried to set it up as well as I could without crazy expenditures. It currently has a penguin bio wheel rated up to 50 gallons (for the carbon) along with a protein skimmer rated up to 65 gallons. The tank also contains 4 -5 inches of live sand, approx 30lbs of live rock and t5 lighting. I also have a marineland maxi-jet in circulation mode (500gph max) to help with water movement. The tank finished cycling a few weeks ago and all parameters are exactly where they need to be. If you guys have any information on ways to increase stability in the system besides drilling or hang on sumps (read very bad things about them) or any items that I have and don't need, feel free to let me know. Your feed back is much appreciated and I look forward to joining this awesome community. Oh and I will be introducing a clean up crew once the bio-load is added.

hey guys my name is andrea and im located in lakewood,
I have been in the hobby for about 2 years now.
I have a 60 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump and a about a 15 gallon frag tank.
In the big tank I have a powder blue tang, a firefish, a melanuras wrasse, a small vlamingi tang, a pair of ocellaris clowns, some cleaner shrimp, a black blenny and my personal favorite, a midas blenny
In my frag tank I have a tiny sailfin, two small snowflake clowns, a yellow coris wrasse and a stubby clown.

I also really love anemones, I have quite a few : )

I got married and my wife loved reef tanks, so I started up a 29g nano, and now I find out my wife is addicted to the hobby. So, I found a used 150g acrylic tank that I am working on getting set up. When I was in the hobby before my last tank was a 125g with 4, 150w MH's... Had lots of great growth out of my corals, loved the tank. But as many other know to well that other commitments get in the way.
The improvments in knowledge sharing now is great, and the improvemnets in equipment is a great help to reefkeeping from what I have seen.

hey i been wanting to post on here just didnt have time. I have a 75 gallon reef its been going about 8 months now and look forward to learning even more about this hobby.


right now my setup has about 80 lb of live rock 4inch deep sandbed a 25inch long refugium with cheato and deep sand bed lots of pods by the way. coralife 2 250 watt metal halides with pc actinics for supplements and led moon light im using ushio 14000k bulbs they are 2 weeks old. also have fluval 405 canister just for carbon and phosphate remover and chemi pure. also have 2 skimmers 1 is a cpr built into a aquafuge large hang on back refugium the second is a seaclone 100 i know there cheap but it acually works really well with the maxijet 1200 i empty every other day produces good color skim. the cpr one is a beast it fills a big cup every other day also. all water parameters are good 0 ammonia nitrite and 5ppm nitrate maybe less.

For livestock and corals i have

hippo tang 5 inch

green mandrain goby

yellow tang

flame angel

fire goby

mated pair of clownfish

cleaner wrasse

1 pepermint shrimp and 1 cleaner shrimp

lots of hermits and snails

for coral so far i have

bird of paradise

green bubble tip anemone

torch coral

frogspawn

lots of frags of zoas hopeing eventully will cover the whole rock there own

2 feather dusters

purple mushrooms

and thats about it

Yes i know some say hippo tangs need 6ft tank and i do have a 6ft 150 gallon ready to go once it gets bigger but for now i want to perfect the hobby as much as i could before starting the bigger tank. the 75 gallon seems to be going good fish are all happy no fighting and acually the yellow tang and hippo are like buddys all they do all day is follow eachother and eat eat eat

Hello everyone.
I have been meaning to get a FOWLR tank since some time now. There is a space crunch at my house and as such, the biggest tank I can install is 44"X16"X20".
I have a few queried before I take the plunge:
1) I work for 10-12 hours a day. Will I be able to provide sufficient care for the aquarium?
2) I am a late sleeper and consequently, my lights are on till 2 am on average. Will this affect the fish?
3) I sometimes play loud music. Do loud volumes (heavy bass) disturb fishes?
4) Lastly, is it necessary to keep the roof (that houses the lighting system) open the whole time?
I am sorry if my questions seem silly, but I could not google these queries successfully and would like to know before taking the plunge. I am ready to make sacrifices to fulfill this wonderful hobby. Hope you fine folks can help me out.

Hi! I am a definite newbie - don't even have a tank yet - that found their way here looking for sea horse info! Thanks to a thread on this site I have been spared the heartache that would have (likely) been mine had I purchased the sea horse tank from Serene Seahorses from Fab.com. No kidding, I was about to push the buy button tonight! But thanks to what I have learned here, I am instead going to upgrade my Monterey Bay aquarium membership (so I can go visit their ponies) while I gain the requisite knowledge to insure my (future) pony purchase is a success.

So I see a lot of reading/learning ahead of me and I am open to and welcome (actually I'm kinda begging for) any advice that you saltwater sages might have to offer me. I have always wanted to own sea horses, although I have limited saltwater experience. Also, how about cuttlefish? Can they be successfully kept in an aquarium?
