If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

bloodypeasant--My sump is about 1/2 of my tank size...and I'm thinking about adding on a hang on refugium as well...to help with my pod population! What are you stocking your tank with?

No clue yet. I still need to read about all the species of soft coral and reef safe fish before i decide. At this point im just waiting for my lighting canopy, then ill transfer my freshwater fish to their new tank, and finally ill buy some salt, sand, and LR to begin establishing my tank. Im still a far ways away from stocking.

Hello

Hello

Hello everyone, I am completely new to this and have joined before I have made my purchase so I have a better chance of getting it right. I am mainly interested in nano reefs an plan to eventually have about 5-8 in different rooms in the house ( any where from 5-30 gallons). I may start off with a fluval spec as I like the tanks that are long but shallow (no more that 12- 18 inches high).

I will be asking tons of questions so I hope I don't annoy too many people:thumbsup:.

Thanks everyone

hi RC im new in this site i been a reefer for 3 years and i have a 72 mix reef with a refugium ai sol blue leds and a few other goodies

Hello! I have had several planted freshwater aquariums over the years, but am now itching to have a marine tank. I am here to gain as much knowledge as possible.

Hello

Hi! This is my first post. I have a 120 gallon sw tank and a 55 gallon sw tank that I want to start adding coral to soon. I've had some low light corals in the past but I have to get better lighting. I only have dual HOt5's right now. i'm addicted to saltwater life! I've done a lot of research on my own but I want to make sure I do it right so any and all help is appreciated.

hey guys,ive been a freshwater hobbyist for over 6 years now have had many tanks small to large with biggest being a 175g tank. I use mostly canister and sponge filtration systems. I am very interested in turning one of my 125g tanks into my first saltwater. Where should i start?

Hello to all you reeftank junkies! I am currently waiting for all my equipment to arrive, when I too will be a proud member of your group. It all started with a 16 gallon freshwater tank that I put together for the bedroom. This has now escalated to a 3500 .00 investment in a 75 gallon acrylic tank, stand and canopy , sump, pump, wavemakers, wavemaker controller,live sand, live rock, etc. I will surely need your help and support through it all. I hope to share the mistakes and the triumphs with all of you. My name is Dan Reich hailing fron New Milford, CT.

Hi,

Glad I found this community as I am just starting a small reef aquarium. Although I have 20 years of fish keeping, this is only my second time with saltwater, and first time to focus on reef. The coolest thing I have had to do with saltwater are volunteering with the New England Aquarium in Boston taking care of their marine life (and Anacondas), and dove with rays and nurse sharks outside of any cage off the coast of Belize.

Here's what I have got to start things off:
* 29G standard tank
* 1-2" coarse sand substrate
* 150W Ebo heater
* Coralife super skimmer 65G (HOB)
* JBJ oceanstream nano 500gph wavemakers
* Tunze comline wavebox 6208
* 40lbs live rocks - "primo deco" (arriving this week, hopefully)
* Hamilton bimini 150W 14000K HQI

No sump or refugium, at least not anytime soon.

Tanks been running for a couple weeks with nothing as I play with the setup. Live rocks due to arrive anytime now. I will be cycling it with 20lbs first, and add another 20lbs 2 weeks following. Then, I will add a CUC and maybe another couple weeks later some SPS/LPS.

Any advice, recommendations, comments and well wishes welcomed

Nice to be here!

Hello. Try this very excellent website aquacorals.com. I am a newbie myself, but I'm following their recipe. The science behind what they tell you to do is sound . I feel confident that if followed, their recipe will work very well. Check it out, anyway. Let us know what you think !

Hello, I am new to the forum and the hobby. I have a 200 gal reef tank up and running about 2 weeks now. Hope to start adding few fish soon. Goal is to grow a nice fish and coral reef tank. I already made my first mistake buy filling my tank with tap water thinking i could treat it like the fish store. Unaware of RO/DI units at that time. LOL. First lesson learned but no harm done yet. Also i am in houston tx area.

Hi everyone on RC. New RC, been in the hobby 35 years. Started Reef tank 4 years ago. 144 Oceanic Half round, 200# live rock. Just recovering from a complete die off from ich, velvet. Never experienced this before. Essentially starting over. Looking forward to some good advice. :sad2:

Hello

Hello

My forum name is Discover Daily because I am always on a learning journey, and learning is key to being successful in this hobby.

I started a 75gal sumpless tank set up. It's 8 weeks old and I plan to evolve this into a reef tank over time.

Here's the detail of the current set up:

75gal glass tank
75lbs dry base rock and 5lbs cured.
2 1/2" sand
Coralife quad T5 HO 54 watt bulbs
Rapid Pro filter
Octopus BH90 Skimmer,
2 - 550 power heads
heater

Livestock:
1 yellow tail damsel
2 clowns
10 or more little red and blue legged hermit crabs
5 turbo snails

One mistake I know I made already: I bought a small 2"(ish) sailfin tang, I KNOW now that wasn't smart, because it's going to grow too big for the tank and it really needs a 100gal long or more... So I talked to the store, owner who said I can bring it back for full store credit, even if I wait and let it grow a few months. Of course he'll take it back after it's grown some.. he can sell it for more money and i did all the work growing it!

So anyway i want to evolve this into a reef with mainly LPS and soft corals. Am I headed in the right direction? What equipment do you think I will need to upgrade or change as I get into corals? I am trying to do things correctly, but pretty sure there's something I missed in my set up so far. Thanks for any help you can give me.

By the way, I really appreciate all the info found in the new to the hobby forums!

Hi
I currently have a cichlid tank and am looking into starting my first reef tank. I have been lurking around here for several years and I am finally ready to take the plunge.

Hi
New to the forum, I had 3 cichlid tanks but am now converting my 72x24x24 tank to coral tank. Working on the lighting at the moment, gradually making changes but will probably need loads of help.

Hello fellow addicts,
New to RC and just getting back into hobby after many years... enough that you could say new to reef keeping. Been doing a lot of reading and it's nice to see help availlable here.

tank info: 40B, DSB, refugium, still deciding on lights, currently 20+lbs live rock cycling tank

Hello everyone,
I have been a long time lurker and this is my first post. I am getting closer to making the tank dream become a reality. Lots to learn and ask. Thanks to the RC community for all your contributions.

Gilberts is in the Far NW Burbs of Chicago - out by Elgin/Dundee...

I just purchased a used 24 gallon nano and will be working on getting things going. Hoping to find someone local that will be willing to work with me on things! I was in the hobby about 28 years ago and it has changed!

From the add for the tank I bought this is what I have:

24 gallon nano cube with factory LEDs
Drilled in back with 2 returns in tank
Custom acrylic fuge underneath
Holds filter padding, skimmer, refugium,
Return pump
Coralife nano uv sterilizer connected to factory return pump
Hydor slim skim skimmer located in sump
Hydor heater
Black stand with doors
Jbj surface skimmer

I am open to hear from anyone - especially if you are local to me - on setting things up. I know there a couple of LFS so I will be hitting them up. Just curious with the question of getting live rock and/or sand, what to put in the sump/refuge, etc!
