If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone,

My name is Mike, I am a new reefer with a few years of experience with freshwater tanks. I just purchased a 90 gallon Starfire PNP system measuring 36" x 24" x 24" along with 90lbs of dry rock (Fiji reef, tonga shelf and some branch).

Looking forward to all your input and useful knowledge along this journey!

Thanks
Mike

Hello everyone. I'm a newly to this beautiful costly hobby lol, but I hope to become a successful reefer. I bought a 29g Coralife Biocube. I have already purchased a RO DI system. I wanted to know if I should upgrade the filters, it currently has bioballs, what do you guys recommend. And for my cleaner crew and fish and coral life what do you recommend. Thanks in advance.

Hi folks! I have a 36 gallon that recently finished cycling, I've added 6 Astrea snails, 6 zebra hermits, a peppermint shrimp (saw an aptaisia), and a clown...all seem to be doing wonderfully :) ... look forward to learning lots!

New to RC and sw tanks

Hey guys and gals,

Introducing myself onto the forums. I've been researching salt water tanks for a bit now and will be buying a coralife 29g biocube here within the next month or so. I currently live in Brownsville, TX and while we are a port city there's hardly anything I've found close by that deals with saltwaterfish/aquariums. I do, however, see a lot of helpful information shared by helpful people on this forums and am excited to be starting up my tank. I should have quite a few questions but i'm sure i'll be getting plenty of feedback when I do.

I'll be starting off by buying a vortech mp10 and a retrofit led upgrade for the biocube for with 12k lighting so i can get some nice corals into it.

As far as live rock and sand, what's the best place to look for some good live rock that i can form into structures that have lots of caves/holes for fish to swim through.

Thanks in advance!

Getting ready to start out with a salt water reef tank

Getting ready to start out with a salt water reef tank

Hello,

My name is Greg and I am new to this forum. I don't have a tank yet but am researching up what I want to get. I hope to get around a 75 gallon reef tank with a refugium. I am starting from scratch not having had fish since I was a kid. I have been impressed with the threads and info on this site and look forward to connecting with folks here.

Hi guys,

I've been, running a 29 gallon FOWLR tank for about three total years. It's been a learning experience and exercise in futility to say the least, but I've become hooked.

The first setup I had was several years ago, I listened to what's now an out of business LFS and ran an under gravel filter with live sand. That didn't end well, I fought constant water quality issues that killed my fish and ultimately kept me from keeping salt water fish for a long time.

Fast forward to two years ago and I set up the same tank on a tight budget for my wife and kids. This time I used 25 lbs of live rock, a powerhead, and a hang on back Penguin bio wheel 200.

Although I was able to keep the fish for over a year something unknown occurred and wiped out my entire stock that consisted of two clowns, a goby, peppermint shrimp, 4 small crab and a small anemone.

I never did determine what caused the last failure, all my levels at the time checked out but it was heartbreaking.

I'm now looking into setting up a 75 gallon tank, and either using my old 29 as a sump with refugium and skimmer. This time I hope the extra size helps to buffer any problems.

I really hope to have more success with the proper equipment this time around. I would love to eventually pick up some coral but I've been too afraid to so far.

Hello everyone, I am from Germany, 40 years old and just starting over with reefkeeping (once had a 80g fowler tank for a while, but with no real motivation in my office ). In Germany most do fresh water tanks, this is where I come from (i used to grow Malawi perchs in a 150g tank and some smaller ones but had to stop this some years ago due to medical issues. Now for reefkeeping i just bought a used 300 g tank with some technical stuff that could further be used. I just finished my DIY tank stand (using RocketEngineers plans). I plan to do a lot of DIY (like LED lighting, programming an arduino ph / temp / KH /light etc controller, a sump and some other stuff ), hoping to find some help here and probably help some others on the long run. Please excuse my sometimes strange sounding english :-) All the best ... Dominique

Hello,
Please allow me to introduce to you my aquarium (I would share a picture if I could)
I just switched to a 90 gallon from a 60 only after having the 60 set up for 3 months. This hobby is absolutely addictive! 😆
I have had freshwater aquariums for many years, picked up a 60 gallon tank and stand with the intentions on increasing the size of my freshwater. After looking at several different saltwater fish and coral just decided that I would really like to have a saltwater aquarium, so the hobby began.
I have been trying to figure out how to upload a picture from my phone, but it is just not working for me. :headwally: I know nothing about uploading from a url..
When I try to upload from the attachment, it fails every time.

Hi, I'm Pete, from close to London, UK. I've been keeping salt tanks for 20 years, mainly fish for the first few years, gradualy progressing to soft corals and eventually, perhaps the last 5 years, SPS.

I'm very interested in the technical aspects of keeping a reef tank, both equipment and chemistry. I have a scientific education but in physics which is not that applicable to biology!

I only have a 200 litre tank and no space for sump in the current house, so I'm a bit limited as to what I can do. I recently restarted my system because of a couple of years of neglect (down to other commitments), and have gone BB, ULN and I am interested in maybe going partial zeovit, or similar as I have a few theories about zeo that I hope to discuss here sometime.

Cheers!

Hey all,

I'm from New Hampshire (New England, in the Northeastern US :) and I'm just starting up a small FOWLR tank that I'm hoping to expand into a mini reef in the future. I've kept malawi cichlids for a while and I'm just getting my bearings in the saltwater world. My new saltwater tank is a 36 gallon bowfront.

I work in information security as an engineer and penetration tester and when I was younger I taught middle school biology. The aquaria hobby seems to be a perfect mixture of my interests in engineering and biology.

I hope to learn as much as I can from all of you!

Thanks!

Hello everyone. Not new to the site. I usually just come here for reference and have only posted a few times.

I'm from the Cincinnati area.

I have a 75 gallon that I have been cycling for almost a year now. I actually just added my first fish 2 days ago so the only livestock that I have is a 4" lawnmower blenny, a peppermint shrimp, a few blue leg hermits, and a bunch of snails. I have a little less than 90lbs of live rock. I converted an eshopps 125 wet/dry to a makeshift refug. The inverts have been in the tank since week three of the tank setup. I have 2 reef breeders led fixtures above the tank and I want to start adding coral and fish soon.

Hi, i work in marine science and recently have been tasked to setup 20+ aquariums now and another 20+ later this year. The first 20 has been a great experience (for a beginner!!!) and the trial and error is a good way to learn. But i have also developed an extreme appreciation for everyone out there who has a large or intricate setup and in ingenious DIY projects.
Though my current dilemma is with the heating (and heat ranges) of the aquariums and i have come across a few discussions heating ideas that have given me something to think about. But before i go any further i though i would introduce myself and read through a lot of the information on this site.

Hey guys, my name is Ryzen and I've been in the hobby for 6 years now. Owned a 75 gallon reef tank which I donated to the Aquarium of the Pacific 6 months ago, now I'm back with a 28 gallon jbj. I don't know what it is but i cant seem to stay away from the hobby, its just too awesome to give up:)

Hey guys, my name is Grant and I got into the hobby a little over a year. I currently have a 225 reef (in-progress of setting up), 250 fowler, 120 holding tank, and (2) 40 breeders for frag/quarantine. I finally just joined the blog but have been reading a lot of the forums to learn. I became addicted to the hobby as soon as I started an jumped in head first. I think the marine life is amazing fish an coral alike and love the challenge of creating a functional tank! Now that I have progressed into a reef tank I would love a little more help specified to my situation and advice on some equipment and fish. Thanks!
