I'm having big fun now...390 display +

I really like the yellow wrasse. I have been waiting till I get some netting on top of my tank. Every now and then I have to get fish out of my overflows. I didn't know these fish would eat clams. Now I am having second thoughts. I was planing on getting a few clams for my tank. I am really trying to keep the safest reef fish in my display. I guess these fish are no no if you plan to have some clams..

hello mflamb,
im really impressed! its nice to see another mechanic on these forums. your going to love that vlamingni, its the fastest growing fish ive ever had not to mention tons of personality. if you ever decide to start selling any of the products youve made at home like the reactors let me know. great job! being that you are from florida can you actually try to catch some fish yourself? ive been there many times and the wild life is incredible. ill probably end up movig there to be closer to my fam and my homeland...its only 90 miles away from key west!

j-solar, let me know next time you're in Florida. I'm not selling any DIY stuff...all the DIY stuff was made as part of DIY parties with local reefers. (Thanks ReefArtist and CMCneil.)

Eric, as Carol said, and as everything I've studies says, Yellow Coris Wrasses don't eat Tridacnid Clams.

Eric, these are great fish and please don't think they eat Tridacnid or Derasa clams. I've had or had these clams with these fish and they have never touched the clams. These are the best fish I have in my tank. Great personalities, they have never picked on another fish, they are constantly cleaning around your corals, rocks, etc. They are great pest control - flatworms etc don't have a chance in my tank with 6 of these wonderful fish (of course I also dip/treat all corals before placing in main tank). Most fish that are carnivorous will eat feeder clams, so if you discount these fish because of this you would remove most of the fish from your list :).

I do the "lights off for two days every month" thing. I started my 390 with a gallon of "stuff" from Aquatic Eco Systems in Orlando. It comes with all kinds of live bacteria and algae spores. The initial results are lots of various kinds of "funk" growing everywhere. Well I did that in August and have enjoyed watching the algae funk growth die off or get eaten by the Blennie ever since. In September, I started the no lights thing and the skimmer goes nuts for a few days starting on day the lights come back on, so I thought that I would use my new Hanna PO4 photometer (thanks FAOIS) to see what happens during that time period. So here are the test results for before and after taken about 5pm both days. I tested PO4 and NO3 twice each time and results were the same.

Day before lights out (Thursday):
pH 8.26
temp 81.0 degrees F
PO4 0.03 ppm
NO3 undetectable

Day lights back on (Sunday)
pH 8.03
temp 80.8 degrees F
PO4 0.07 ppm
NO3 2 ppm
Alk 9.7 dKH / 3.45 meq/L
Mg 1230 ppm
Ca 490 ppm

During lights out days, temp stays around 77.6 and pH aroung 7.83.

I haven't done a blackout/lights out period since adding a few acro frags. Do you have any problems with you SPS during the blackout? I know it happens in nature, so I would think it's ok, just enquiring to your experiences.

I noticed that you converted your alk to meq/l. Do you always run your alk a little low?, I have mine at 4.5 meq/l to match calcium levels of 450ppm.

Thanks

Chris

Mike,
Just saw your thread after you sent me the pm. Your setup is amazing! My 75 gal looks like a sump compared to that
NICE WORK!

Thanks for the tip!

Paul

My alk usually runs arount 10 dKH. I'm ok with it where it is.
Don't you love that spelling...aroundt, sorry around.

I'm interrested in seeing how long it takes PO4 to drop back down after the black out period.
You need to come by, it's looking better every day. I need some good pics, so bring your camera.

Beautiful tank, when it is time to install the new 309 gal in the house in 6 weeks we'll be refering to this thread!
Cool, you're not too far away. I'll have to keep up with what you're doing. Let me know when you start a thread.

Tested PO4 two times this evening.
0.04 and 0.03
I had about 50% more skimmate than normal.

Off subject. But I have a question have you used royal purple?
I have not used it, but lots of my customers have used it with good results. What vehicle are you considering using it in?

Well I got wrapped up in an old project of mine. I sold my stang around college and purchased a supra. I had a lot of fun with it for a few years. It was not comon to have ajap car back in the mid 90. Had to make alot of stuff to get it to fit. Well a big turbo high boost and 180000 mile motor finally gave. It has been sitting for about 8 years. it has forged pistons, yada yada. Every bolt is arp. The car stock never had a lot of oil pressure. when you give it gas it would bump up fine but it still scared me. I did shim the pump to bump it up a little. I want to sell it down the line and get an old muscle car but we know how that goes once i feel it has a little power i might be hooked.

Anyway any thoughts?

Good to know. I played with sct on a couple f250s. Amazaing the power they get from theses trucks today.

well back to reef stuff.....how about some new fts???
