Edward, Simply stunning. The sleek, elegant, simple look of your tank is so awesome. Someday when I grow up I want to build a tank like yours :D. Definately TOTM honors are forthcoming in the future. That pendent is exactly what I am looking for. Unfortunately Giesemann does not make a 2 x 250w T5 setup in the size pendant I need. Grrrr, wish they did.

That looks awesome Edward! I really like the look of those lights. It's too much light leaking though for me to use it on my tank.

Great setup!

How high off the tank is the pendant? What is your tank temp right now? It looks like only a few inches could make a big difference in how much light leaks out.

You mentioned wanting to keep dendroneptheas and their kin - do you have any particular plans to address the feeding needs of these animals?

Last night before i went to bed, I wanted to see how much of a
difference the 20k spotlight made. I turned it on and aimed it into the tank around the corals. I was suprised to see that even though these spotlights are very strong, it wasnt as strong with the giesemann fixture turned on. I could barely see the difference. The giesemann overpowers the 150w spots. The good thing is that when I moved it around, you could see the corals glow.. but the glow was very specific to where the spotlight was aimed towards. It was like having another set of actinics. This doesnt mean that the spotlights wont work. Since the spots are 150w, and they will be angled, I plan to still use them rotating the activation of each light over the tank.

HotRod, thank you so much.

GSM, you got that right. I had to accept what you said with the light spilling. It's definitely worth it.

Bill, thanks again!

mcrist, its definitely a great light. The Sfiligoi is a great competitor, no doubt. naka has this light and I love it.

cbui, thank you.

Hop, that was my goal. I still have a long ways to go to get it where I want it to be by adding livesstock and then cleaning up the equipment area.

Brian, fellow AGE tank club member, yours is on top of the list also! maybe this summer we can come to Austin.

jwc, thanks. It's a fun experience with a lot of challenges. This is just the beginning.

Lnell, let's see what I can come up with when i start adding livestock. My goal is to have a very "alive" looking tank.

nugz, I really appreciate the comments.

ataylo, thanks a bunch!

Brian, that fish is overpriced. :) Thanks for the lookout! That fish is in the same family as my flagfin.

Alicia, what size pendant were you looking for?

Joe, Thanks my friend. I was thinking about lowering it some to contain some of that light spill. I didnt want too because my corals my not like the strong intensity right now :)

ReeferMonkey, its exactly 10" from the rim of the glass. 11" from the water. My tank temp is 78. My chiller has been coming on a lot now. I am waiting for my new toy from giesemann to bring down the temperature. If I put it any closer, it may make the chiller go crazy. :) Once my corals get used to it, I will lower it a bit. As for the nepthyea, I feed them a mix of food.. marine snow mixed with angel food cubes. The problem with this is that when I feed them, my flagfin sees it and comes and tries to eat teh food off of these soft corals. I am now waiting until the lights are off. :) I also plan to use the blu coral method very soon.

Now you see what I mean about super bright? No dark areas at all on this 40" wide tank. The only other thing I have seen that I dislike is how the light escapes on the left and right side of the tank. The front and back is perfect because it has the angled T5's which block it. One thing I did on these pics is I blacked out the stand so you guys wont see some of my temporary white PVC. ;) Thats how the stand will look anyways :)

I dig the Spectra. :) The only way to eliminate the leaking light is to lower the fixture. Even then, there will be some llight eaking. I got used to it on my tank. It may be hard to look at the sides of the tank if you are sitting on the floor due to the glare.

So the spotlights will go in front of the fixture? It looks pretty keen light that. I hope the spotlight fixtures are sharp.

I tried postinmg twice last night but couldn't get it to go through. I feel that you could mount well machined plates that mimic the contour of the lamp on either end to block the light spillage. In fact you could probably sandwich reflective material on the inside face to reflect light back into the tank. Just a thought. :)

I wanted to show you guys some differences..

this pic is with only one 250w 13k on the left on and all T5's.

this pic is with 2 MH's on.. both left and right. The middle is off and all T5's on. I think I like this the best. Not so bright for my softies. :)

this is just a top down of the left side. now i get a glare from the T5's.

Love the rimless tanks. Especially one that size. The Giesmann fixture is a nice choice as well. I've got a 90 rimless with the Giesmann fixture. I can't wait to get my large tank setup but I'm afraid I will have to live vicariously thru you for a while longer :)

Awesome tank. I love it. Who built the tank again?

Great job so far.

Chris

Ah, now I see the angel. She was hiding, I was'nt seeing her in some of the previous pics.

The 13k looks like it will be a nice bulb. Looks to be pretty white. Do you know if the ballast is a HQI or standard magnetic?

Chad

So all the holes on the bottom are for returns for flow in the tank? What is powering all the returns for the water flow, just one pump, or you said one was on a chiller too?

taco, it does look great the way it is. I will figure something out so it doesnt look sloppy or out of place. You know I wont let you down. :) I already have an idea.. just need to test it out.

jnarowe, I tried posting too and it wouldnt let me. Thats a good idea about sandwiching it. I may have to play around with some of these ideas.

Chris, AGE built it, but purchased from Aquarium Environments in Houston. Which Giesemann do you have and which bulbs? Would like to see what you tried out and what you like.

Chad, I was thinking about you earlier when you said you couldnt see the Angel. :) He's in there alright. This guy is very active. more so than any other fish I have had in there. Im in search for some new fish. :) Havent found any that has caught my eye recently except for that blue spot, but it was sold within the hr. The paperwork says HQI.. maybe thats why its so bright? What's the difference? The Giesemann 13K does have a slight blue tint to it.

Could anyone tell me how you make those 3d models. I am trying to design a tank and it would help me out a lot.

google sketchup

the answer is in the thread if you read it. :)

I've got the ummm 250w Eco fixture. Before the Infinity came out. At first I ran the 13K Megachrome bulbs in the fixture that it came with for about two weeks I'd say. I thought they were incredibly bright white I thought. I thought I wanted more blue. I then switched them to the 14K Pheonix and I will say that they made my zoanthids look GREAT. I also had marroonish red coraline growing like crazy. I ran those bulbs for about a year. About 3 months ago I switched to the 10K Ushio bulbs and it took a little bit of getting used to. At first I thought they were a tad yellow. I will say my zoanthids look horrible compaired to the Pheonix but I do like the "natural" looking light and it did help burn off a lot of that dark maroon coraline. It was almost unsightly. I've been trying to find some 14.5K Megachrome bulbs.. I've heard they are really good but very hard to come by for some reason.

Good luck and MORE PICS!!!!

Chris

Do you have two bulbs or 3 in your fixture?

Overall, the final project should look something like this (not including the spot lights). I will be rotating light activation throughout the day while some spots come on first, the core, then others.. etc. I have the photoperiod time in a spreadsheet on how i want this to work. My initial goal is to have the core lights for as short as time as possible.. possibly 4 hrs. The colors of the corals will be my guide throughout the year. The core lights will give the corals its true colors (light or dark) vs the supplemental MH's and T5's are for the corals reflective properties which is an instant look vs the core which takes months to acheive. Another factor to this is the specimens I will be keeping as most softies dont need as much light.

Just found this thread...the tank is awesome. One idea that immediately popped into my head was building a step around the stand that matched the stand (or around most of it) so you could step up and easily peer over the rim. That would just be icing on the cake, amazing tank (makes me wish I still lived in Houston, would love to check it out).

Invincible569

I have been following your thread for a while now and have been inspired by some of your ideas and respect the time and energy that went into designing your system.
I have started designing a tank I plan on building in the next few months and would really appreciate your input and advice. I still consider my self new in the hobby, only a year and a half of experience, and would appreciate any help I can get on my design.

Thank you and the tank looks awesome
