japanese zoos the next craze?

Or they start showing up on RC forums with colors that have been around forever but with "deepwater" or Japanese prices. What is the deal with people charging more based on location? I've seen this with Aussie acans as well, look the same as Indos that are half the price but nobody wants those because they aren't cool anymore. Nothing like paying to get raped.

Considering you work at USPS you should know it more money to ship from further away places. The landed cost for something from australia or japan is a lot more then it would be from indo. Plus they are both developed countries vs 3rd world country earning pennies for collecting these. Also for the japanese ones they cannot contain live rock so even if these are wild zoanthids some degree of work is required to make them legal.

i got into a lil spat in the socal forum over the hyped japanese zoas or deep water zoas. i do not get it. they look like normal solomon island zoas. i had some about 4-5 years ago (see my gallery look at date pic was posted. i still have yet to see someone give a legit answer to if they are deep water zoas how do they survive in our hi light tanks? its common sense the deeper that you go into the ocean the darker it gets. how do these zoas have nice color or at that keep color in such low light. also how do they survive in our tank with mh and t5's? i dare anyone to keep these zoas in lil to no light to see how long they last. i dunno but it is getting ridiculous with these zoa names and prices! jmo isnt everything in japan cheaper to buy then it is in the states? lol ... let the flaming begin.. i am use to it. i got flamed in the socal forum for saying what allot of people where thinking...

SOREVIV476 - Im pretty sure they are from Japan - unless Solomon Islands instated Japanese as their official language and are using Japanese newspapers to ship their zoas :)

I think they tried that in the late 40s and it didn't work out to everyone's liking.

Here's a few pics of some frags I just picked up. I think the "deepwater" zoas are like other corals. They're nice but the really sweet ones aren't that common.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Any kind of dry goods or hardware is ridiculously expensive, if you can get it at all. there is only one store on okinawa that has a 400W metal halide rig, and it's over $2000 when you factor in the exchange rate. Good luck finding any kind of T5's, or VHO's. They simply 'dont exist' out here. A prizm skimmer will run you about $250.

Fish are very cheap, though. i picked up a very nice scopas tang for about $11. Corals, if you can find them, are pretty overpriced if you try to buy from a normal petstore. There happens to be a coral farm local here, but their selection rarely changes. nice clams can be had for about $8

while diving, I have yet to find any zoo's below ~20 feet. All of the colorful zoo's are above ten feet, close to shore, in areas of very high flow, crashing waves.. ect.

I stood & stared for about 20 minutes, at all the pretty colors my LFS had to offer. I had a $125 credit to spend for a fish that I got from them that had died. I picked a gorgeous gold/orange/blue colony for $50 that I loved the best & the rest I spent on smaller frags of deepwater zoas. They set the bag with the favorite colony I picked out on the counter & a woman who had bought a single ric grabbed my bag instead of hers & left! The owner thinks she did it purpose. I did have fun making them lift the eggcrage to dig out a bunch of loose polyps though. :p

Well, I got them all glued in one spot down low. I couldn't wait to see my lil Japanese garden, then I noticed the POX! They're back in QT again, soaking in Furan.

I talked to a few people about these deepwater zoos and then my LFS got some in. They are awesome, but The 2 people I talked to theirs died and after a week the ones at my LFS are melting away. IS anyone having any luck with these at all. The ones at my LFS were about $2.00 a polyp for soem awesome Navy and yellows, flaming red and bright blue, and some awesome gold and green camo ones. Like I said I'm not buying them because they are all melting away and dying. So sad.

I paid about $1/polyp for colonies but got a bunch of freebie frags too. Like I said, I did a good soak in Furan & Reef Dip before I even considered placing them in my tank. The ones w/pox were removed for more dipping but the rest are starting to open already. We'll see...

The ones that are opening (my biggest colony & 2nd choice) seem to be gold with a navy blue ring around the gold, baby blue mouth & bright orange skirt.

The color combos in these zoas remind me of the striking colors of my Rastas.

No, at least not based on the observations I have made here in Toronto.

Does anyone believe that zoapox are more common with these polyps?
