Wow! Hope your pump survived. I forget, which pump is your main return?

I'll have to remember this lesson when I fire up the big MRC dual becketts for the first time, yieks!

The main return is the PanWorld which I will be replacing as it's just not quiet enough. It puts out about 1400gph and I think I'll swap it out for the Velocity T4 that puts out 1200gph. Every user says that pump is quiet (but hot).

I do have a bucket already hooked up to the skimmer so good idea on putting that float switch in there. I'm going to be switching it off at night meanwhile.

The Pan World is a mag drive pump isn't ??? If so I think it'll be OK from a short term of dry run. It ought to perform until you can replace it.

I have PW 50XPX on my 75, it's a lot quieter than my LG 3 MDQX-SC and an externally run Mag 9 I am using but I'd like something quieter.

I didn't think it was related to the mags at all but I could be wrong. Other PanWorld users report theirs are quiet so guess I was just unlucky.

Man, I don't know how I missed this thread, the tank is looking awesome so far and you don't even have water in it. Any ideas for a fish list yet?

Not Mag as in Supreme Mag but a magnetic drive. like Iwaki pumps. Here's the Pan World description from the Marine Depot site:

"Pan World Magnetic Water Pumps are built by a former chief engineer from Iwaki-Japan. It basically has the same specifications such as flow curves, high head pressure and reliability. It also features seal-free bearings and magnetic drive for trouble-free use."

In general magneticly driven can be throtled down without damaging the pump as they don't tear themselves apart internally (interms of impellers, shafts & seals) as typical centrifugal pumps might when presented with back pressure or if they run dry for a short period.

Slowly but surely. :p

Have a few pics now, just need to scan them in. They depict the last few weeks anyway. The Derltec skimmer went crazy AGAIN when I was out for just 2 hours. Came home to another 50 gallons down the drain. Basically the thing is unusable until I get the float valve. :(

This is absolutely why I recommend running a skimmer in-sump if at all possible.

Have you talked to Doug of Deltec to see if you can resolve this issue? He goes by diverdown1 on RC.

Yep, I intend to post down there. I do have some pics scanned in showing teh racks in action with the sand test and a few other things. But will have to be tomorrow as it's 3.30am and I have to pick up my brother at the airport in a few hours.

Before you go with the Rebel XT, look at the Nikon D70 for a similar price point comparison. We have the D70 and played with my Sister-in-law's XT over Thanksgiving. The XT takes a nice picture, but even she commented that the D70 felt more solid and shot a sharp image. If you already have autofocus Cannon lenses, the XT will be a great camera for you.
