I have to agree with Vamp75, the 20D is an amazing setup. I have had mine for a year now, and I am continually amazed at the quality of photo's it produces.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all,

Mike

If you can afford it, pop for the Canon 20D. Amazing pics and solid feel.

I agree with both Vamp75 and cmhollis... I have been looking at a 20D and if you get it before Jan 15th you can get some good rebate(s) back on the body and some lenses...

Thanks for the ideas. It will be a while before I can get the new camera as I have a few big purchases to take care of before that - live rock, chiller, controller....when does it end, heh.

Well, I do want one in English. Might be cheaper but finding one in English might be hard....

Okay, found an hour to sort out some pics. Some not the best quality but should give you a good idea about how these racks work....

Well, the first test was done with salt. I took the tops off and poured plenty of salt inside the racks and turned the pumps on. The first test was done with 3 nozzles up and 3 nozzles down and the results were disappointing as you can see....

As you see I was just not getting enough flow off 3 nozzles to clear out the rack and this was just light salt. So was time to go back to the drawing board.

So I decided that if I was going to keep this idea I need to face all 6 nozzles down. I added locline and rearranged and this time did a test with sand. The results were great. All sand was cleared in seconds leaving the area under the racks spotless.

You can really see how well they performed with the sand piled up towards the back for easy siphoning when needed. :)

I'm a bit worried about the weight of the rock so I decided to inser some 2" pipe supports which fit in the middle. I drilled out holes in the top plastic lid so detritus can fall down into the rack to be blown away.

Have you thought about an egg crate base for each structure? That would spread the weight across more of the bottom.

And what about drilling holes in the manifold piping and plugging the outlets to see if you can get the flow where you want it with more force. The smaller holes would keep the velocity of the water up wouldn't it?

Egg crate, can't get anything like that here but I wish I could find something stronger and something more inclined to let the detritus through. I was thinking about using the base of a beer crate - would that work?

The holes wouldn't work and I think it's a bit risky to try. With this system I can just run that big Sequence a few hours a day to clean out the bottom so it's saving onm electricity too. :)

SO HD hasn't arrived in Japan yet huh?

If you mean beer crate like milk crate, sure why not. I've seen more than one system where plastic crates (Bread racks, soda cases etc) were used creatively in rock work.

From inspiration of your system and some others, I've been toying with the idea of plumbing a sub rock cleaning line to run just before water changes and maybe once a week to avoid detritus buildup in rock work. Why not?

Well, Im going to trek out to some hardware stores tomorrow and see what I can dig up (as tops to those racks). Once that is done nothing is stopping me from getting the LR (except the green, lol).

Big news is that my transformers came today and the electrician wired them in. All my halides light up now and holy sheeeeeeeeeeeeet, I have a pulsar in my house. :D

After half an hour that room was cooking so happy that air con unit is in there. Really looking forward to the aquascaping as it's starting to annoy me just having those PVC racks in there. :p

I made my rock platforms using the bottom of bread trays. Delivery people use these to hold loaves of bread when making deliveries. I used my table saw and cut the bottom into the size and shape I needed. I also cut strips and used them for the legs on the platforms.<br />

^ thats a good idea, iam am sure they carry soda milk or bread in something similar in Japan....

Sweet... I know this is prob a stupid question, but where can I get these trays, I am sure they are hard to come by as they are reused and places are prob not willing to get rid of them ?? Where did you pick yours up at if you don't mind me asking...

Sounds like a midnight mission in the works .. "The Great Bread Tray Robbery" ... bread trays disappearing all over the world! ... could be a mini series.
