Jebao Cross Flow Pump

Anyone watch 60 minutes last few weeks ago. The one they covered the "El Chapo" escape? Well they talked about the counterfeit market in China and how they have no boundaries and will copy any product they can make money off of. They were talking to the damage it can cause large corporations. They also said that in some cases it is actually good at driving prices down on some items. It was a very interesting discussion, albeit brief tho.
As I have said in the past, I don't think these pumps have anything to do with vortech competition for most. My tank is eurobraced and I wanted NO wires across the top of my tank. I traded my previous tunzes for my current vortech set up to achieve what I wanted. If that wasn't the case then I might have tried these pumps. Not sure though.

Stealing ideas or not, $300 to move water within a tank is just financially ignorant.

It's like $1600 Tshirt. If u earn over $400k per year then go for it but I suspect most who drop that kind of cash are just bad with money
 
I don't make 400k a year. I'm in college as an adult. Not near it. I also have a eurobraced tank and didn't want wires hanging out of the top of my tank. I wanted it to be as clean looking as possible. So I traded my tunzes for my Vortechs that I currently use.
That makes me bad with money and justifies calling me out for it?:hmm3:

I traded 2 tunzes for used MP 40's. Even new they don't cost near 600$. Not to mention~ I was going for a certain clean look. Eurobraced open top tank with no wires hanging from it. So I wanted a clean looking top line of the tank and I traded pumps for used pumps and i am making bad financial decisions??? I am bad with money?
The thread is just about bashing other people's choices they made and not knowing all the details involved in them. No one knows when this is coming out so they fill pages with non relevant bashing. I don't think competition is bad in the economy and have stated that. They talked about it in the 60 minute special I asked if anyone else watched. But I paid zero actual dollars for my vortechs. I traded old used tunzes for them. That's s pretty solid deal I would think. But apparently I am an idiot who makes bad money decisions in life. I just don't see the relevance of that it how it's useful to this thread.

$675 for MP60s for our tank. Multiply times 6... ugh...

~ $100 for an RW20.

So $4,000 vs $600... that's a lot of nice fish and coral, not to mention if one goes out, I can just replace it with the newest version of whatever pump Jebao is making many times over and still not hit the investment of the vortechs.

In general, all hardware made for this hobby is junk and will end up failing. I'd guess a lot has to do with the environment it's run in. Saltwater is tough on equipment.

If I knew an MP60 would be the last pump I'd ever have to buy, then $675 might not be so bad...

... but there are tons of reports of Vortechs failing.
 
I agree Peter. I never once claimed they are the best pumps in the galaxy. I said they fit my desired application. No wires on top of the tank. I don't gave a canopy so it's open top. I wanted a clean look. If I wasn't concerned about that, honestly I would have kept my tunzes. I liked the directional flow that all pumps but the vortechs give you. I even contemplated draining the tank and installing tunzes like Sleif did in his tank. I was going after a certain look and that's why I chose vortech. The Tunze pumps rock and I never had issues with them. i had a specific desire and the vortech is the only pump that met that desire, without having to drain the tank, cut it and install bulkheads. Then cap them and cut cords to re solder. Even trade was far easier. I paid shipping for my pumps to go out. That's all it cost me.
All in all, not a bad deal really.

Corey, I'd take MP60s over RWs any day as well.

Starting a tank this size was a big investment, and mostly walked a fine line between getting what I wanted/needed and keeping my wife happy. Needless to say the day I dropped my Reef Octopus DCS300 wasn't a good day. I think my wife saw how upset I was with myself that the expensive replacement didn't bother her haha

I'm a big spender and if it wasn't for her, I'd be broke! (with a lot of cool stuff though :P)

I also don't run a canopy, but my stand+tank are very tall. I'm 6'2ish and can't see over the top of the tank, so wires didn't bother me. Also know the wires in the tank are purple and blend in with the back wall. I have one pump still on the side of the tank, but I might move it soon.
 
Peter, I am going to have a big tank one day too! I almost bought a 900 gallon a few years ago, but it wouldn't fit into my apartment door....:lol: I understand what you're saying. This hobby gets $$ real quick if you let it. In the large tank forum there are guys/gals who have tanks they admit to having over 100K$ invested in early stages of set up. My first question to them is....are they hiring where they work at?!?!!!!!!:D :lol: I'm a parent and a college adult. I cannot afford all the pretty toys. Sure i save up to buy some cool stuff but most of my set up is used it scored a great deal on including the tank. I built my stand. Used 75 gallon for sump, rapidled DIY lights, diy light hanger, diy algae scrubber. I'm on a budget like most of us. I don't think I'm bad with money or stupid especially because I own a certain type of pump. That's mostly what I'm saying.

Makes total sense :)

Some people skimp in different areas. I skimped on pumps, but have expensive LEDs.

My wife would rather see me buy cheap colorful fish, but to me I love having rare and unusual fish in my tank, even if other's have no idea what they are.

Also I'm a fish guy, so I just get coral I think looks good to me. Every time I get some expensive named coral it ended up not liking my tank :P
 
Well I have been watching your thread and you will have more than me eventually. I am not upgrading tanks anytime soon. I have some applications out for medical school and that will require NO tank upgrade. :D Seamonster might be right, that could make me bad with money! :lol:
One thing I did save money for was a new skimmer, a tank with a ton of fish in it needs a solid skimmer. Plus I scored a sweet negotiation deal on a new one!
Peter, when you dropped your skimmer, what did you replace it with

Hey Corey,

Ah, in the end after med school you should be able to buy whatever you want!

I replaced it with a newer gen Reef Octopus, the Regal 300SSS.

I can't really get it dialed in as well as the old skimmer (which is fixed and on the frag tank), even with a stronger power supply and next gen controller. Not sure what it is...

Actually I don't think I would ever go that extreme. But I guess we don't know till we have the means. The first thing is getting accepted into school, but I am working a few career applications too, just in case I dont get into school I can start a new career and make it worth it!
I considered the regal series too.

You'd be shocked with how much I spent (didn't spend) on this build :)

I could have easily spent 3-4x what I have so far if I wasn't cautious.

I have a lot of friends (not in the hobby) that would just throw money at something instead of dealing with it themselves and seeking out great deals. Even on things like cars I'll wait/travel for a good deal. Bought my wife's car at sticker, when EVERY version of that car had a 10k+ dealer markup, it's worth more used than we paid. Just had to drive to a tiny Texas town that got one by mistake and waited a few months for one to show up :)

i.e. My sump was $150. Basically somebody in the area ended up with an 8 foot acrylic fuge that was built by a sump builder for their personal system and no longer wanted. Needless to say, not many people in the area that could use an 8 foot sump.

A lot of other things I won't disclose just to be fair to the companies involved :)
