Once again the meet will be at:

Bob's (aka, thysrof) house,
1935 Alderbrook Ln,
Santa Rosa

1PM

This is our big summer meet. We usually get some nice swag from BRS to really sweeten the raffle!

Be sure to bring a frag or three of the great corals you have won at WCR meets over the last year to share with this year's winners!

In addition to members bringing corals, is the club ordering from anywhere as well, or did we "blow our wad" at the last meet?

Yeah, I had the same question since I don't even know what was brought in last meeting?

Last meeting had a ton of stuff from your reef. There was some really nice stuff. Problem was that there was very few people and I'm not sure that we broke even on the deal...

Yep. That has been the issue at the last two meets.

If anyone has any ideas to encourage member donations to the raffle I'd love to hear them. Without member donations (I'm talking frags here!), the raffle will quickly become unsustainable.

If you've won corals and they are doing well, frag 'em up and bring it back to the raffle.

Personally, aside from people bringing stuff, I'd be fine with the price of tickets increasing.

I would not be happy about a ticket price increase.

Unless we are more the Wine Country Coral Killers, there should be lots of raffle corals which have grown to the point of being fraggable. I have "fragged back" a number of raffle winnings and other items as well. In my time with the club I've easily donated way more than 100 frags, and not just little 1/2" squares of tissue either.

And just to be clear, one can donate items which are not grown out raffle winnings also.

What if we made purchasing raffle tickets contingent on donating at least one frag?

I find it frustrating that we have to make posts about members being more generous for the raffle when hundreds have been passed out from the raffle at the meetings. if you've gotten corals out of the raffle and killed them bring frags of something that is doing well in your tank.

As John said this is unsustainable! We will run out of money and the club will suffer.

Isn't the fundamental problem that we aren't bringing in enough money? When selling tickets do we keep track of how many tickets are bought VS how many frags are there?

What I believe to be the problem:
Pretend 5 tickets is $20 (because I forget what we usually do).
Say there are 40 frags.
If we sell 80 tickets ($320), we pull 40 out of a hat and give away all the frags.
However if we just sell 40 tickets ($160), we STILL would pull 40 out of a hat and give away all the frags, but we get half the money.

We could either:

1) Set a minimum number of tickets that must be sold per frag (say 2 tickets per frag, or 3 tickets per frag). This will result probably in us having say 40 frags, and then selling 60 tickets, and asking the group to buy more before we can start the raffle. I'm less of a fan of this option.

2) Raise the price of tickets. If we do this it makes it more expensive but the result will likely be that people buy less tickets so the chances of each of your tickets getting you a frag would be much higher. We could even try selling the exact number of tickets that there are frags, though the issue here if it's not expensive enough is someone buying too many tickets and getting most of the table. We could prevent this by having a cap on how many tickets one could buy. It would be less of a raffle and more of a randomly ordered pick at that point, but that doesn't seem bad to me.

You have to keep in mind, the average size of the frags that are available are generally quite small. If you're talking about a 3/4" sps frag, it could be a year before the dang thing is large enough to justify fragging.

Same with the Lps - most of time the acans are a single head or 2. Chalices are tiny, euphillia are single heads. It takes time for most things to grow.

I know myself personally, I don't want to chop up an acropora that's only 2".

Now - there are always exceptions like the large pieces that bob donated at the last meet. But those are the exception and not the rule.

Also - if the meet isn't panning out financially I would have no problem donating an extra 20-40 bucks every meet. My tank is at the point where I don't necessarily want anymore corals, but I'm more than happy to put money in the hat for the things that I have received in the past until they're large enough that I feel comfortable trimming things. Even if ticket prices were raised, I believe people would still make a killing compared to purchasing these corals retail.

Just my .02 cents.

This was talked about with BOD which was brought up to me by a member. We have always done this during raffles. Once everyone won at least one frag we allowed members who haven't a chance to grab a frag. It was then at one meeting a member asked me why do we do that and it's not fair. This member purchased $40 worth of tickets and got the same amount of frags as a person who paid $20. So I thought he brought up a good point. It's a raffle tough luck if you didn't win anything. I spent $50 at other clubs swaps to come out with nothing. Luckily it's been awhile but it has happened. So if you took away an early round free for all with one coral your talking about 12+ corals still on the table. I don't know about the club funds or BOD's direction anymore but that was one scenario. Plus last meeting you have to consider who wasn't there also. I know Colin and I at least bring 5+ frags a piece so lets say that's 10-15 frags right there.

Another point someone pointed out to me was if I paid for raffle tickets do I have to give back. Essentially he paid for the coral should he be enforced to frag it to give back? I replied it's just being courteous of being part of the club. Again it's based on what you want to do in my opinion.

I feel a lot needs to be done to have a successful meeting. Early club buys telling members what's coming in or even with pictures. Members posting pics what their bringing in for the raffle or just stating. Essentially those are the two items that get people coming. Or side trades, I essentially go to swaps for side buys, trades and vendor buys now. Thinking about it, it's also mainly to see old faces that I haven't seen in awhile just to talk corals.

Hi all, been a bit busy so have not been as involved as I want in the last year. While I am not a super-old member, I was an active member for 3-4 years.

My take about the club is

1) great crowd of people to hang out with

2) a select number of members were the core donators of lots of coral frags from their own tanks that helps make the raffles exciting. A number of them are (hopefully) temporarily on break.

Grant, Ollie, Colin, (me), among others.

Many generous people tended to bring at least 10-20 frag containers. For many of these individuals, it was not about getting a frag to grow out to sell elsewhere, but growing it out to give back to members.

For myself, life has been busy and my tank after yet another tank move and LED lights dying for a bit have left me in a slight slump. Planning to reset up another tank that will be easier to maintain. Some of you know a have a "big honker" 150 gal tank standing 7feet off ground. Pain to maintain.

So point is, we need to get some more generous members to donate back to club to keep people excited.

I will try to visit this meet but need to check kids schedule (it's a bit of a drive for me from Berkeley).
