Junior's 300 Reef Build

Out of curiosity what's a tank like that cost? I'm in the market for a new tank and was along the path of building it, however if something like that is cheap enough... Never seen a "standard" tank that was 36" wide.

Oh and for a light rack, build it out of aluminum you can pick up angles, c-bar & square stock at home depot. I built one for my tank... well then tank issues happened (reason why I'm in the market for a new tank), and unfortunately the dimensions i made won't be too useful anymore.

its standard...i was going to increase the drain and return lines, and add 5, 1 1/2" holes in the back, and it raised the price $1000 because it was then a "custom" tank, not production, and bla bla bla....i was dissapointed, but ill make this work just fine.

I was going to go miracles and have a continuous overflow in the back, but the price difference was just way too much. They wanted over 4k just for the tank.

Looks like an awesome tank!

Was this a standard tank for Marineland or are you having it custom made?

Yep, im using angle aluminum from HD and will rivet it together.

I like some of the nicer options, but its just not in the budget. I would rather put the extra money to better use.

its looking to be at least 6-8k before water hits the tank...

so it will be a while before this tank is seeing water.

I might be able to get it cycling a while before i add all the lights and flow, but i figure it will be summer before any livestock makes it in here.

The tank should run you anywhere between 1500-1800 for the 300 gallon.

The trick is to find out when the trade shows are work with your LFS to buy one around that time. they can get deep dicounts at these shows and pass the discount onto you.

thats what I did.

Yeah right Jr.!! You will have water in that tank within a couple of weeks of seeing it in your house. And you'll be adding livestock to it not long after! Trust me, its way too hard to resist once the tank is actually in your house calling your name:)

lol, i wish.

Im about 7700 short of the 8k i need to finish it up=)

Time to frag up some of those awesome Acan's then! :eek2:

tell me about it!

Thats actually going to happen real soon.

Ive even decided to part with one final frag of Dragon Skins.

The rest i will hord to myself, as they are leaps and bounds nicer than any other ive seen.

ive been going through my whole house looking for crap to sell.

Game counsoles, DVD's, etc...if its not bolted down its going to be sold.

Well, after doing a lot of thinking, and even more research Ive decided on a few pieces of equipment.

Im going to start off the tank with some existing hardware i have, and then when the $$ is there, or in some cases the products are released i will upgrade them.

The skimmer will be my Deltec AP702 and be upgraded next summer with a BK supermarin 300.

The lighting will start with a 72" Aquatinics Constellation 14 bulb HOT5 unit.

I will then upgrade as soon as possible to the new profilux 8 bulb T5 fixtures that are being released early next year. I will deploy 4, 8 bulb units if $$ allows.

Then they will controlled by my Profilux controller than i am currently running.

Allowing for all the cool lighting effects. i.e. sunrise and sunset, moon light, storms, cloud cover, etc...

Also I will start to cook my live rock hopefully next week.

Now, i need to get some holes drilled, baffles installed, and a ton of plumbing parts, and i should be in position to add some water and sand, and get things running.

I overlooked my ceiling height in my basement and realized halides are out for sure. they would literally be sitting 1" over the height of the tank.

not at all sure. Im thinking about going with profilux ballasts (dimmable) with sunlight supply's new T5 reflectors and end caps.

otherwise just a standard sunlight supply retro kit 36 x 8.

Then without a doubt, an army of 22k aqua science bulbs.

I know they won't be as long but what about doing 4 60" bulbs (they are 80 watt, unless you get them 'overdriven' and then they'll do about 100w each?

I got mine from reefgeek.
