who has done it? i've tried before in smaller tanks and ended up with one in about a year. does tank size matter (DT 281)??? or maybe heavier feeding?

I have 9. Started out with 11. Lost 2 in the first week. Added them on 07/26/2013. I have a 225 gallon. No aggression that I can see between them. They still school together as well.

Here is my recent FTS in which you can see them schooling in the middle of the tank..

I tried it twice about 10 years ago in a 120. Heavily fed tank with more assertive tank mates and I ended up with one mean chromis each time. I think each time it took around a year until there was only one left. I would not try it again. Just my experience.

Good luck if you do try, I hope you can make it work.

That seems to be the most common result. Also, be careful about chromis as they are often coming in with Uronema marinum a difficult to treat marine fish parasite.

my failures have included a 90 corner and 125. however, size may matter as posted by djkms.

I wish someone would get to the bottom of this. 20+ years ago I kept large schools of chromis in almost every tank I maintained. No causalities, and I didn't even know what Uronema was back then. So, what's changed? Are chromis nowadays being collected in a different location??

I started with nine in my 180. I never noticed any aggression but I did eventually wind up with one over the course of 4 years

I don't know why. I do know that it seemed to start about 4 years ago. Anyone got any ideas?

I recall reading that there are at least two very similar looking green chromite sub species with possibly different temperaments. I have no idea if this was accurate.

Has anyone had long term success with any of the other chromic species in groups like the Blues or some of the lesser known species offered on Live Aquaria or DD? Some of those are really interesting beautiful fish.

I have had several long term successful runs, my longest was 6 for 6 years, and only lost those to a heater failure.
I have not had any issues keeping them in my last 3 long running tanks.
I always buy them very small/young, not sure if that makes a difference.
I see many others here locally keeping them, I really don't know why so many here seem to have issues.

Interesting I wonder if there is any fact behind this? Seems logical since it has been a problem for all. I would be afraid of ever trying the more colorful and expensive ones that are rarely offered. Never really even think of them until I see them on the sneak peek

Kept 4 for 1 year little to no aggression had an eel so that's probably why they schooled I naught them young so maybe that's why I was lucky !

Is there a behavioral difference between the Chromis atripectoralis (Blue Axil Chromis) vs Chromis viridis (Green/Blue Chromis)?

For what its worth, I stocked very small chromis on each of my failed attempts.
I sure wish I knew what the key to keeping multiples of these really is since I would still love to have a group of them!

I started with 4 that quickly (less than a year) became 1 in my first reef (38 gal).

I now have a 178 gal but am reluctant. Unfortunately, I fear long term success is unlikely.

Follow up question: Would they likely start picking each other off in our smaller QTs before even making it to the display? I have a 40g breeder and would still be concerned.
