keeping 6-8 green chromis?

There is are difference the common one we see in LFS are the Blue/Green Reef Chromis (Chromis viridis) more green than blue the Blue Reef Chromis (Chromis cyaneus) more blue, these are the ones you want they tend to get along better. Both are from the damsel family so they will fight as they get older.

Not 100% pos but keeping them in odd numbers I've heard keeps them from killing off each other..

For me I did an even number and ended with 1 .. After an ich attack and lost everything I bought an odd number and all have lasted

when to 4 LFS today to get 10 chromis, but they all looked terrible. scars and marks on nearly ever fish. maybe Uronema is the problem?

I think they don't ship well for one, and since they are considered to be cheap and therefore somewhat of a no big deal fish they just aren't handled properly, and I also think this is a factor in the common dieoff comments.
If you did or do buy those for sure QT them, as you should be doing anyway really.

4 Years ago I had 9 in a 75 gallon tank, over 18 months after that all 9 were still in the tank. No special care was taken they were just normal chromis, never QT'd or anything.
My new tank started a little over a month ago I used 12 to try and get a cycle going. All were still alive as of friday this week when I started removing them via a fish trap I made. I did notice one was crazy mean and aggressive toward everything else in the tank. The reason I took them out was because they seem to be very aggressive eaters and I plan on keeping some fragile species and don't want the competition for food.

Added 5 yesterday and one is already badly injured. It has a big wound on left side. I put it in QT and now have 4 left with just two snowflake clowns in a standard 60 gallon

update on my progress....added the 10 chromis to my dt today. they are eating well and add a lot of life to the DT. i have no real plan only to feed alot!

I got 5 babies. The largest two are about the same size, another two are about the same size, and there is one that is smaller than the rest. Mostly the largest, was picking on the smallest two, especially the tiniest one. I had to take the two smallest out of the QT and into the DT. Then the larger of the two was picking on the runt in the DT constantly. Simultaneously the middle one, smallest of the three in the QT, was getting bullied by the biggest. I took the middle sized one and put him into QT with the small ones.

The reaction from the DT bully, second smallest, was priceless. So used to harassing the runt, it first encountered the new transfer and was automatically aggressive. Took a few seconds for it to realize it wasn't the runt but a larger version. Needles to say, the recent ex-QT flight back and the hunter became the hunted once again. He took a pretty good beating before dominance was established. Now the 3 get along well and the runt isn't nearly as abused and very little aggression among them.

The two larger still in the QT get along well with the larger only occasionally pitching on the other.

So far there is peace in the land. Trying to give the little ones more time in the DT to grow before I bring the two big guys over and then...?

How are they doing? I am about to buy them. Thank you for the update:-)

doing well!!! one, however, died a couple of days ago but he was weak from the beginning. the jury still out as iirc past attemps took about a year before they started killing each other.

do not think that would really have any affect on the outcome.
if you originally had 10 and one died then that would result in an odd number remaining and all should be good at that point.

Just going by personal experience.. I think they need an established leader fish once placed into a permanent aquarium. That being odd numbers.. If one dies they still have their leader.

UPDATE: down to 4, however, they have grown larger and seem to be doing very well. i'm thinking of adding 8 more as maybe some heirarchy has developed?

I started with 6 in a 240. Lost one in the first 6 months and kept the other 5 for 8 years.
I passed them along with the tank to a new owner when I bought a new tank.

I have 9. Started out with 11. Lost 2 in the first week. Added them on 07/26/2013. I have a 225 gallon. No aggression that I can see between them. They still school together as well.

Here is my recent FTS in which you can see them schooling in the middle of the tank..

gorgeous tank!

I tried 11 green chromis in my 300g. Down to 5 in a few months, now just 2 who seem to be content with each other. I now collect anthias.
