keeping hedgehogs w/in salt H20 design?

From what I have seen with other peoples hogs, MH can cause bleaching (see earlier posts). I believe they are more low light animals... If you can, do your part and find a tank raised hog.. This helps keep the wild populations in the wild where they belong :)
 
Thanks for the info, the problem is... I have halides on all my tanks... How well do they do in nano tanks? I have an extra 12g bow that he could have to himself. Do they need swimming room? or are they pretty stationary?
 
As long as you get the wheel in there, that will keep them in one place. BTW, make sure the baseball cards are the plastic type...the others didn't last long:(
 
a swimming wheel? like the one I have for my powder blue tang? and they said I couldn't keep one in my eclipse system 3! hah!
 
The good thing about the wheel is that if set-up correctly, it also works as a bio-wheel, helping your filtration.. and those hogs sure can be messy with their food..
 
The main problem I have is keeping my nitrates down with these guys...they have some serious, um, how can I say this delicately, excrement issues...sheesh! I tried the shaved cedar, and it did help with the lighting problem, but all those shavings were a pain to pull out of the overflow.

Just a quick update on the dayglo pink species...I guess they were right...all natural color on these babies.

Do you think I can put another in the tank? What about a blue one? Will they mate, and if so will the babies be purple?
 
So I decided to try the hedgehog thing a couple of weeks ago but it isn't going very well to say the least! I noticed that he was developing blisters on his feet and I was concerned so I decided to bag him up and take him to the vet. Well I didn't double bag and sprung a leak half way there. I didn't have any salt water to fill it back up so I panicked and stopped at McDonalds and filled the bag up in the bathroon with tap water. Needless to say he went nuts. I raced to the Vet and she looked at me like I was NUTS!!! She yelled at me saying that they are not meant for Reef Tanks! I tried to explain that it is being done all the time now. She wouldn't help me. Needless to say I left and went home. After thinking about it for awhile I came up with a brainstorm. Everthing else on him seem s fine except his feet so I kinda created little "rubberboots" for him. Brilliant right?...Wrong! I rubbed his feet with some ointment and wrestled his boots on and threw him back in. All seemed fine for a few hours so I went to bed. I wake up this morning to find a murky tank, shriveled & droopy corals and one on his boots was missing. After a quick search I found my Maroon Clown with his head stuck in the boot! I am about to throw in the towel! Do you think the ointment was a bad idea or do you think the rubber caused some kinda reaction. I was thinking of a waterchange but I am outta salt right now. Don't laugh but would table salt work in a pinch or would it hurt the blistered feet of my hedgehog?
I need help!

Wait wait, back to the nitrate problem. I am trying out one of the new Korallin BioDenitrator and I think I'll put it on the hog tank to see if that helps. I like the wheel idea.. but what kind of cards work best?? I was thinking about my old credit cards.. but I was afraid they would leach heavy metals into the tank from the ink... what about laminated baseball cards?? They would be sterile.. and would look cool... I am at a loss. This is so much more difficult than my reef
 
laminated basebal cards work, especially the holofoil ones.. they reflect light and add to the glimmer lines from you metal halides.
 
Where are the Flamingo's? Under 03 's or 30,000 K MH they complement the Pink Hog's color.

Heck, I may even dye the Polar Bear shocking pink. :D
 
Are the flamingo's reef safe?? Won't they go after just about anything that moves?? and what about lighting? they are so tall they will knock just about all hanging lights therfore burning their heads. This also rules out canopies... so we are stuck using Suntubes...
 
i just started this about a week ago and every thing is great i put him in with my sea horses and they get along great they go into his mouth to clean but i havent seen them in a while after they started doing that what else can i do
 
Finally figured out why my hog is doing so poorly. Bug eyed and pink cheeked. Turns out I have a hitch hiker from my Australian Live Rock. Finally caught the bugger in action. Appears to be holding down my hog down so he can't get a breath (notice my clown taking off - so much for symbiotic relationship)

Anyone know how to get rid of the hitchhiker?

well to get rid of it you can kill by using metal hallides they normally burn it... but i dont like killing so i frown against it.
you can always inject it with morphine and send it fedex priority back to australia
 
I did some checking and Koala bears are NOT reef safe, they have a tendancy of trampling most of your corals , moving around your live rock and will on occassion chase after your cleaner shrimp. I've found in the past that using a higher than normal Lugol's dip tends to drive off most of the Autrailian hitch hikers
 
Well I saw the study on the hedgehogs and mine was doing well then while I was at the zoo I noticed some of the monkeys liked the water, so I bought a spider monkey to acclimate to the tank. After a few months I realized where the puffer fish actually came from as I had baby puffers everywhere. Then I realized that one of the offspring has actually bred with one of angelas gonad eating butt fish I got recently , I am am a bit worried at this point more later on the health of the tank and other speicies. also stay tuned for pictures of this transformation
