Kessil Club

After running the lights at 100% I had a significant increase in turf algae on my rock (still trying to get rid of) and the glass needed to be cleaned more frequently. I'm thinking it's to much output in the 10k range.

That's interesting. Me as well but I attributed it to phosphates

Just got my A360we for my 60 cube. Looks a bit dim but i am comparing it to 250w MH so that might be why. Anyway. I love the thing. Just needed to express how happy i am with it!

NO... to answer you and a couple other questions my 200g tank pictured above is 72x24x27 and predominately SPS (50+ frag-colony size) + zoas, shrooms, Ricordia, RBTA's etc. I had the same question and originally thought about 4 evenly spaced lights but it would not work because of cross braces and the overflow (cross braces are at left and right side of overflow). Then it dawned on me the center light is all that's needed for the mid section (adjusted slightly down and more forward) because of the overflow. And of course it also gets light from left/right sides. So my only real choice was the more expensive option of 5 lights with 2 left, 2 right and 1 center and it worked out great. I am also running the lights only about 4" from water line for best effect and no little to no light spillage.

Ok cool that makes sense. Can you explain why more kessils = less intense shimmer though? I would think it would be more intense since the light is coming from more directions.

I haven't ever had measurable phosphates in the past 6 months because I've been running a bunch of GFO in my brs duo. I'm thinking about setting up a refugium this week. the new skimmer is in and working great. Plus I'm still feeding a little heavier and dosing zoo plankton. I think I'll work my lights back down a bit...maybe 100% blue 50% white.

Well when I first put them up my tank had gotten a little cloudy from what was probably an algae bloom. The lights have a diffuser but you could clearly make out each LED beam when the water was cloudy. I can only speculate that the lights are close enough together now that the blending of light reduces the shimmer. Don't get me wrong the shimmer is still there and more than any MH I have ever used.

thank you, currently that is kind of what I am doing. I should have been more clear about my true question. Is 65% max intensity (post acclimation) too much for LPS softies with how I set up my light? Rock in the center part of tank is about 9-10 inches at highest point. I have the ACANs/LPS about 3/4 high and off to the side of the rock-scape (outer edges of rock-scape.)

Your LPS should be fine, maybe put the softies towards the edges. When you get SPS, you're going to have to put them higher up and towards the center.

For a 72x24x29 tank do you guys think 3 is enough to grow prodominently sps? If not, how can I add more a 4th or 5th evenly spaced without getting the 2 cross braces under the lighting?

I'd say 4 at least. Ideally, you'd probably want 5 of the narrow versions but I have no idea how you would work around the braces.

I've decided to change the dimensions of my new tank from 24x20x20 to 26x24x20. i've already purchased a A360WE and appreciate your thoughts as to whether it will be adequate for what will be a softies/LPS reef

I just picked up a 360we and I'm kinda disappointed doesn't seem very bright on my 180. I switched from a 250w metal halide.

It's been fairly widely covered that the a360we lights are going to be visually dimmer than your metal halides you are used to, or even some of the higher wattage led units on the market.

I just purchased the Kessil Controller and I am wondering on how to set it up for a complete cycle of sunrise to sunset and some night actinic action. I have the A360 over a 60G cube.

Here is an example

Time Color Intensity
8:00 0% 15%
10:00 20% 50%
12:00 50% 100%
14:00 75% 100%
16:00 40% 50%
18:00 0% 0%

Just adjust it to your liking. I don't think you need to run it up to 100% intensity. Maybe 80% a5 the most in my opinion but every tank is different. Then I would set it to acclimation mode starting at 40% so you don't shock your corals.
