Kole Tang...My first DD purchase.

well, since they are herbivores, i would think he'll be fine with just nori since he will only be in qt for a while. there will surely be other stuff to peck at when he gets to your dt and eventually, he will take to mysis/brine, etc.

That is what I am thinking Nina. I figure as long as he is eating and pooping he will be OK. It seems like he actually prefers the Nori after it has been in there for a while and has gotten soft. Maybe it is more like the natural hairish type algae he is use to eating.

same with mine. he doesn't go near the nori till it's practically falling off the rock. but when he sees me coming now, he goes right to the surface and waits for the syringe. he is an eatin' machine! is yours out a lot now, not as shy? this guy is out all the time now and if he happens to be behind a rock, he comes out as soon as he sees me. :)

Mine is the exact opposite...lol He is out and about when I peak around the corner. When he sees me he is back into his pipe and does not come out until I am sitting in front of the tank for a minute or so. The room he is gets zero traffic except for when I come in to check on him.

too funny! i wonder what others experiences are as far as qt location/getting a new fish used to activity. when i was deciding where to put mine, i almost chose the guest room where nobody ever goes. i even keep the door to that room closed 'cause i have an entire wall with shelves where my collection of 100+ breyer horses lives. model horses + great dane tails = disaster! so, i put the qt in the kitchen corner instead. :)

I recently added a Kole to our grouping here and by far is my favorite fish. He's aloof, just cruising, pecking at the rocks, glass, and as well foraging in my sand. He keeps the tank nice and clean. Great fish!

Good looking Koles! I added one to my tank back in February. He's grown quite a bit. It's funny, he seems less interested in nori than other foods. He's the first to attack the feeding ring when the auto feeder drops food and destroys mysis. I'm not sure how long term he is going to be in my tank. He keeps getting in scuffles with my onyx clown and she keep ending up with cut fins and little cuts on her side from the tang. My wife really likes the tang so we'll see.

very pretty!! bummer that he might have to go. if i were you, i'd arm wrestle your wife and see who wins. you win, kole stays. she wins...well, we won't even go there. ;)

i can't wait to get mine in the dt so he can work on my rocks!

I read 'somewhere' that Tangs get a lot of nutrition from the fauna that lives in the algae. When they eat the algae they also eat the fauna. Sorry I don't have a reference for this. It might be urban legend. :(

I wonder how much nutrition there is in nori. I look at QT as a place for the fish to get stronger, not just survive. It might be worthwhile to feed some meaty things too.

I would heartily agree with this! While the bulk of their diet should be algae, they will benefit from some meaty items as well.

mine inhales mysis, brine, even tiny pieces of scallop or shrimp. ellis's is being stubborn about eating anything other than nori but he keeps offering it. one of these days, his kole will take it, i'm sure. :)

I think he may be eating the mysis after it settles on the bottom. When it is in the water column he tastes it and spits it out. I will watch it settle on the bottom but when I come back later to syphon out the leftovers there never seems to be any. Do you think it would be a good idea to not feed him Nori for a day to get him hungry then try Mysis/Brine?

i have seen mine do that. he won't starve without nori for a day so yeah, i say go for it!

I picked up some frozen Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 today and he seemed to eat that pretty well. I am starting to think this dude is just a strait up vegetarian.

Take a look at the ingredients. Shrimp, krill etc.

I'm vegetarian except I eat some beef, a little chicken and on occasion pork! :)

Congrats getting it to eat something besides nori!

glad he's finally eating for you! mine seems ravenously hungry ALL the time. every time he sees movement in the room, he shoots to the surface and waits. i don't even have to be near the tank. i give him a little tiny bit of either brine or mysis often and he's eating every bit that goes in the tank. he's paying very little attention to the nori and i'm not seeing him nibble on the rocks much. i hope he's getting enough but i can't imagine that he isn't!!

These guys are definitely eaters. He ate half a cube at 5:30 and the another half at 8:30. I did not put any Nori in the tank today to try to get him a stronger appetite. I will probably feed him another half a cube later tonight. Tomorrow I will give him back his Nori and continue to offer him the Formula 2 cubes.

i'm always afraid to put too much in at once as i don't want leftover food fouling the tank. guess i'll just be at his beck and call and give him a little every time i stand up. LOL

Haha. Honestly out of the half cubes he is not leaving much to foul the water. I do 50% water changes every 3 days and suck out anything I see on the bottom of the tank every night with a turkey baster so I am not too afraid of going a little heavy on the feeding.

He was real enthusiastic about the last half cube I just fed. He was actually picking pieces off the surface before they had a chance to sink.

do you thaw it first or just toss it in the tank? i keep 2 different syringes full of either brine or mysis (one for the dt, one for the qt). i'm feeding 6 fish in the dt and just the tang in the qt. guess which syringe empties first! is there such a thing as fish weight watchers cause i think he's gonna need it. :D
