You know its really a great moment in a bad week to see someone out there is thinking about my family and I. We just got our power back on today.
We evacuated on Thursday 9/11/08. My home is in a surge zone so besides being mandatory per the government it was simply my job as a father to get my family out of harms way. We are at 13' elevation and we were expecting a 15-18' storm surge.
It's a tough feeling to drive away from everything you have knowing it could all get blown away, literally.
We went to my wife's family in Lake Charles, so while evacuated we still rode out Ike in a pretty badly impacted area.
We were restricted on our return by local officials for good reason really, the eye wall/eye went directly over our area. The wind damage was pretty bad even considering this wasn't "the big one" at catagory 2/3. I was blessed in that, the surge affected areas due east of me and never made it here. I have friends within five miles who had 4-5' of water in their home.
I returned home on Monday the 15th to a completely dead tank. 400 gallons of dead bodies of anemones and clownfish and misc inverts that go with them. Just dark brown water. Truly a dark day for me. There simply isnt any contingency plan or backup that covers over 45 hours of no circulation.
Well thats the majority of the story, we are all safe and truly lucky considering some of the problems that surround us. A few downed trees and roof damage is the majority of our problems with the house. If you've seen the boats on the road in Kemah Texas or the Dairy queen under water, thats roughly 5 miles from me.
I'm considering taking down the 400, it's just tough to look at right now.
Thanks for all your collective concern and here's hoping you never have to go through this Minh.
